I seem to remember an early trailer where there are bad guys spraying machine gun fire through a movie screen from behind. Is that still in the film? Am I thinking of the wrong movie?

When is there NOT a mass shooting in the US? There's probably one going on right now...

OK, I'm joking, but seriously, how often do they happen? Is anyone tracking these things? I've got a ex-pat American friend who says these loonies shooting up public places are victims of American government conspiracies to keep threat levels high.

You can't win for losing, I guess. Anyone think this is even going to be good?

Yes, you are correct - this is the one with the movie shooting.

Amen. That thing looks awful. And I'm still not sure if everything Gosling is in is suppose to be satire. Does he act the way he does on purpose, or is he really mentally disabled?

It tries to be L.A. Confidential, but they got Leslie Nielsen's L.A. Confidential And Loving It! instead.

The movie theater shootout isn't in the final cut. One of the reasons it got delayed was because the production decided it'd be a better idea to just film an entirely new scene, set in Chinatown.

I watched Drive with a few friends who hadn't seen it before. During the middle of the movie one of them asked about Gosling "is that guy supposed to be retarded?". I didn't know how to answer that, but apparently that's his acting style.

I really thought he was portraying an autisticish character. Either I'm right or that was weird acting.

RIGHT after? Its been almost a month... Should any movie with the slightest violent act that could be reminiscent of a similar real life even not be released until 10 years of perfectly non-violent existence have gone by?

They released it after the 1st of the year, where studios dump all their crappy movies they know are crap.

Saying it was moved for any other reason is a lie.

They cut that scene after the shootup. Of course my guess it will be back for the Unrated Cut DVD and Bluray, with extra scenes Super edition!

The trailer gave me the impression that it was a mixture of L.A. Confidential and Dick Tracy, and not in a good way. I'll pass.

Emma Stone looked pretty hot, though.

The sad thing is that it is difficult to find a window of opportunity to open a movie that doesn't coincide too closely with a recent mass shooting.

2013-01-15 01:27:28 PM
The thing is, this is a movie called "Gangster Squad." It features, well, gangsters. People who live on the fringes of the law. People with guns. People who shoot things.

Now, if there were scenes involving gun violence in "Happy Scrappy Hero Pup," I can see how people would be offended. But if you're buying a ticket to see a movie about gangsters, you're expecting to see that sort of entertainment. If you're in such a fragile state of mind that the thought of guns will make you cry for the victims in Aurora or Newtown, then you may want to choose a movie or TV show that doesn't revolve around violence or crime.

I'm not saying that tragedy shouldn't be respected. But we need to expect people to be a little more intelligent when it comes to choosing their entertainment. You're well within your bounds to feel uncomfortable watching a violent movie while a tragedy is fresh on your mind. But that doesn't mean the studio should have to postpone or edit - at great cost - a movie that will still be palatable to plenty of viewers.

We just need to have a thicker skin when it comes to entertainment. Think you'll be offended? Don't watch it. Don't be offended if others aren't offended.

I liked that Quentin Tarantino told people to go pound sound when they asked if it was too soon for a violent movie in the wake of a bunch of shootings.

2013-01-15 02:35:22 PM
Well, it came out a month after the Sandy Hook shooting, not the following weekend. And since the movie doesn't have a scene that involves shooting kids in a school, it is not really the same as delaying after a theater shooting, as it does have a scene of shooting people in a theater.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_rampage_killers:_Americas

Between one and three times a year, with between five and sixteen total casualties. So... vanishingly small numbers of people are actually affected by them.

The most recent one was an outlier in that it had a much higher body count than usual, and targeted children specifically for some reason. Oh, and it occurred on a slow news day when the media was seeing their ratings fall after the end of the presidential election news cycle. That last one seems to be most of why the media's being more obsessive than usual.

The Aurora, CO one... I dunno. It was a slightly more random target than usual, but otherwise it was just some random asshole murdering people, nothing terribly special. There was literally a one-car accident the same weekend with a higher body count (Mexican illegals, though, so I guess no one cared about them?).

Saw the trailer and couldn't tell if it was animated or live-action. Hollywood has been making a lot of these trips into the Uncanny Valley lately, and as with 3-D the returns are diminishing rapidly. Soon there will be a naturalistic backlash, and films like 300 and Sin City will join Avatar on the list of interesting cinematic dead ends.

To be fair, I think when/if I watch the film it's going to be spoiled more by "Killing them softly" being one of the last movies I've seen, and the thing I'm going to naturally compare organized crime dramas to for a while.

That sets the bar kinda... arbitrarily high on the realism and the interesting characters front.

//Also, January release pretty much says "this movie's gonna be bad" all by itself, at least for Hollywood stuff. I tend to stick with foreign movies this early in the year. Last year The Raid came out, and was awesome, so it's working.

I can't think of any movies that did that, but TV shows did. Friends and Sports Night both got rid of establishing shots that had the towers in them, at least on re-run broadcasts. The DVDs were not altered.

I found the movie entertaining.

Part of that is accepting that it is a terrible movie. Cause it is something of a train wreck.

The first Raimi Spider-Man movie (as I understand it) had a shot of a web slung between the two towers that was removed.

I think that they had to redo a scene in the first Tobey Maguire "Spider-Man" where he was to spin a web between the Twin Towers. I vaguely remember a friend telling me they had to pull a movie poster from circulation that featured a hint of the scene in it.

The one I remember firsthand was watching "Back To The Future" on TV not long after 9/11. When Marty gives Doc the note about the night they test the DeLorean, the word "terrorists" in the letter was blurred out. I think the audio was clipped too, but it's been a really long time. TBS can allow a character to say "tits" in a movie that airs at 8pm EST, but they have to blur out "terrorists" because it might be offensive.

The most entertaining thing about that movie was the interview Jon Stewart did with Josh Brolin the other night.

Rammstein's "Ich Will" was supposed to premiere on 9/11, but since it showed bank robbers winning an award for providing great news ratings, it was pushed back, even though the point of the video was to *condemn* that kind of notoriety.
