There was a guy who got out of his car near Spearfish (I know that the town name is weird enough) and died a few feet from his vehicle this past weekend. I was always told that if you get stuck in snow, that you should NEVER leave your vehicle. Not to mention I keep a winter emergency kit in the back with some flares, a blanket, and the like. Given the large stretches of road around here that are miles from anyone, I should probably gather up a small kit with a can opener and some food to keep in there as well.

I also know that there are some people who just misjudge how bad it is and think that they could walk to the gas station that they passed a few minutes back. The problem is that driving a distance is always going to seem like it "isn't that far". The distortion of time/distance traveled while in a vehicle doesn't always translate well when you have to walk the same distance.

Oh well, I'm droning on. Sorry all.

They didn't even have 2012 Toyotas back in 1290.

FTA: "[...]the Toyota kept going for around 600 feet before coming to a stop in the left lane against the guardrail"

Later in TFA:
"The Toyota, which appeared to have sustained heavy damage to the front passenger side, was towed [...]"

Did the Toyota do a 180 degree turn before coming to a stop?

I saw what a semi did to a deer once. So that had to been a nasty mess.

In UK, driver is on left side. So no.

Hmm, i seem to remember a few years ago a story of a guy who got out of his car on the highway, ripped off all of his clothes, and started screaming and ranting at passing traffic while standing on the median. Then he broke a beer bottle, and before anyone could stop him, he sawed off his junk with it and ate it.

/anyone else remember this?

Ah, Worcester.

I almost hit a pedestrian crossing 290 once back when I was a college student in Wormtown. Just under the Vernon St. over pass. He made it across all three westbound lanes, just barely. I was in the left lane and had to brake so hard anti locks came on and I swerved, fishtailed and regained control. Too late and too busy checking my underwear to look back and see if he made it all the way across the eastbound lanes too.

Except in the UK they don't have "interstates" and all major routes begin with the letter "M".

/I thought they were referring to the Illinois segment of I-290.

Wow...good acid.

Maybe the Toyota was doing a robodrive, and she didn't want to participate.

And why, pray, is it important that it's a Toyota, and a 2012 model?

My best guess is that a lot of people know that the older model Toyotas had the sticking accelerator problem. They want to do away with people thinking that the accelerator got stuck and she abandoned ship (car?).

That's the only thing I can think of. It's actually more likely that they're just stupid. They were given that information by the police, so they decided to put it in the article.

It was a Toyota, arguably one of the most boring cars on Earth. Why would anybody need a reason to get out of one.

a) she leaped out to escape a spider dangling from the sun visor. b) she jumped to get away from annoying or abusive companion. c) bath salts.
