2013-01-15 09:50:05 AM
ole' FUX News, keeping the Fear strong!

2013-01-15 09:52:33 AM
The Sun...and FOX News.
Experts at feeding us fear, uncertainty and doubt.

2013-01-15 09:52:59 AM
"he possibility that such a Sun burst could hit Earth could cause extensive damage as it would charge-up our electrical equipment"

So.. free electricity then? THIS IS AWESOME!

2013-01-15 09:53:15 AM
I, for one, would like to take this opportunity to welcome our new Solar Flare overlords.

2013-01-15 09:53:16 AM
WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE
WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE
WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE

oh wait, it's Fox news, nevermind

I would take them more seriously if they added probability numbers. like "theres a 1 in 20 chance". But no, real FUD articles need that vagueness so people will assume its more likely then not.

That being said..as any gamer knows...every now and then you DO roll a 20.

A massive solar storm ... is coming

2013-01-15 09:55:30 AM
But will The Sun be there?

"What is President Hussein Obama planning on doing about this? Would you believe taxing the middle class to fund giant underground caverns that will supposedly keep humanity 'safe' until the danger passes? We'll tell you how this new tax will affect your bottom line, right after this."

Repeated from 2002, 1991, 1980....etc.

Faux news, you have questions we have derp.

2013-01-15 09:57:16 AM
And I thought this was the weakest solar maximum since 1906. Silly me.

2013-01-15 09:57:24 AM
Sounds like we're fast approaching peak solar. I warned you guys you were using too much of it, and soon it's going to start running out and the cost will skyrocket.

2013-01-15 09:58:17 AM
Apparently they're saying blue states and those with gay marriage are likely to be scorched most.

2013-01-15 10:00:29 AM
if it hits i'll go fishing. if it doesn't hit i'll go fishing. anyone have a 1958 report or any others describing the fishing during a massive solar storm?

Hell, it seems like we get an "EHRMAGERD THE SUN IS GOING TO FRY OUR ELECTRONICS!!11" story every year.

The 1859 Carrington Event If this happened to day we'd be farked.

Someone played Assassin's Creed 3 and thought it was a telling of a true event.

It takes only 1 damage because it has a high defense rating.

1958? Ha.

The 1859 Solar Storm laughs at 1958. Come back when you are serious about your fear mongering.

/a direct hit solar flare of that size would fark us up bad.

borg: The 1859 Carrington Event If this happened to day we'd be farked.

Yep, it's serious stuff, but it's the stuff of contingency plans not daily worry. It's a once in 200 to 500 year event. There's a non-zero probability that it could happen in any given year but it probably won't happen this year. There's a damn good chance it will happen within the next 100 years though.

you laugh, but just wait till you have to buy all new crap cause your home owners/renters ins doesn't cover "death from above"

The article has something that looks suspiciously like science. Is it real from Fox?

Such an event this year is very unlikely, as solar cycle 24 is on track to be the weakest since the Dalton Minimum a couple centuries ago, when North America experienced several decades of colder than normal weather. Here is the current NOAA Cycle 24 progress report.

www.swpc.noaa.gov

And here is how the current cycle aligns with the solar cycles leading into the Dalton Minimum. Notice the peak of 24 hit about 60...now compare that to the graph...brrr!

wattsupwiththat.files.wordpress.com

This will take a couple more decades to play out, but it will be fun to watch. Stay warm, friends!

But don't worry!
The Martian seed colony can come back to Earth
to repopulate the planet after the devastation!
If the one trillion dollar platinum coin is approved first...
Else, THE SKY IS FALLING!
etc...

Getting accurate news from Fox is similar to getting non-spoiled meat from an old graveyard.

2013-01-15 10:20:23 AM
FTA: "Given the explosion of delicate electronic devices in cell phones, personal computers, and automotive electronics over the past twenty years, we have become very vulnerable to solar outbursts like what is being predicted," Professor John A. Bloom, a physicist at Biola University, told FoxNews.com.

While I know what Professor Bloom was saying (explosion in the sense of an increase in numbers, not BOOM! explosion), comments like these are a good way for me to end up with a bunch of crap in my Facebook newsfeed. There are a percentage of idiots that will forward anything any panic-monkey posts. This is just the type of thing to start a wave of "exploding electronics" posts flooding my feed. (9/10 of these people who forward this crap are Republican for some reason-and here the link is from Fox-so I know from what quadrant these posts are going to originate).

This is just the type of thing to start a wave of "exploding electronics" posts flooding my feed. Thanks Professor JA Bloo-me! You're a peach.

I hope so, I got a new camera for Christmas and I'm want to see if I can get some somewhat decent aurora pics, or any for that matter.

Damn it. That was supposed to be a cut and paste, not copy and paste when I moved that sentence. Oh well. Bring on the scorn.

Hey wait, I thought all the conspiracy websites kept telling us the sun would farking explode on 12/21/2012? YOU CAN'T CHANGE YOUR MIND NOW THAT IT DIDNT HAPPEN!

Not humanity, politicians. They're not human.

apotheosis27: since when does Fox News consult scientists?

Only when they like what they say. Otherwise they just go-with-their-gut which is just as valid as any sciency types' opinions!

2013-01-15 10:43:18 AM
Scientists tell FoxNews.com the impact of the impending solar storm maximum will be at least as big as the 1859 Carrington Event, which caused outages of telegraph networks...

/Citation & "Scientific" Qualifications Pls...

Unless, you know, Huckabee heard it from Chuck Norris or something, 'cause then it's GOTTA be true!

Outstanding news.

Anchorage is warmer than us

and this is the edge of the damn desert

Um, the Sun "nukes" us every second. It's a giant non-stop nuke. This is a good thing.

Obviously this is caused by Exxon and BP, and the only final solution is to exterminate these corporations to the last man, woman, and child. Because all global warming is presumed to be anthropomorphic global warming.

// Through presumption comes nothing!
