I'd heard it was good for bloody noses but I had no idea it could help with congestion.

That said, I use a sinus irrigator for snot removal, and it is AWESOME.  If I do that before bed when I have a cold, I can actually breathe most of the night.

If you don't clear your nose it can become impacted and develop secondary infections that can lead to bacterial infections in the sinus, blood and brain as well as massive blood loss. It IS possible to bleed to death through your nose.

Did you read the same article I did? They didn't say don't blow, just blow lightly so you're not blasting some of that diseased snot up higher into the sinuses. I got the same advice from an Ear Nose & Throat specialist MD 20 years ago. Blowing lightly for a runny nose or to clear a bit of snot is OK. Blasting a snot rocket like you're trying to hit someone across the room - not OK.

When I had sinusitis ~6 years ago the campus pharmacist told me (they have a sit down for all the drugs they prescribe) that I could use the nasal spray for about 3 days then I'd need 2-3 days off, as your body will form a dependence.

Most bottles I've seen since have had a warning to this effect, though it was buried on page 7 of the facts and instructions fold out.

Or eat something with a lot of Sambal Oelek or Wasabi or your chili of choice.

2013-01-15 08:24:57 AM
That's dangerous advice. Blowing your nose allows you to breathe through it, making you not breathe through your mouth, which gives you less of a dry throat, which lessens the need to cough, which will leave you with an undamaged windpipe, which will not give bacteria something to infect. That's how the cycle goes, and that's why blowing your nose leads to less antibiotics-use and death from lung infections.

This combined with warm showers and a strong decongestant is what works for me.

Plus going through an average of one box of tissues per day.

2013-01-15 08:50:46 AM
The best decongestant I've ever been hit with...

www.obramo-security.de

In basic, the crappy mask they gave me didn't have pads that worked right. They hit us on a road march. I happened to have been full of snot for a few day, it was sleeting and farking miserable weather. After the CS hit and my mask let is plenty, I had snot coming out from my head for about 30 minutes. After that, totally clear.

Later, I was driving a CUCV with some cargo. Some powered CS gas was on top of the boxes. The other guy in the truck and I had not idea what the white shiat was on the boxes. It was a hot humid day. After hitting about 50MPH on the highway, the wind whipped up the power, dosing us with CS. Pulled over, let the snot drain out and suddenly the allergy symptoms were gone for about 3 days.

CS, works great, now only if the medicine didn't suck so much otherwise.

I've experimented with blowing my nose vs. sniffling all my life and come to the conclusion that there's little difference really. Both are barely more than placebos. I prefer sniffling because there's no equipment necessary and I don't have to find somewhere to throw the tissue later. When I was a kid my mother used to tell me to blow my nose to "get it all out" as if I were going to eventually run out of snot entirely. I assure you I have never in my life run out of snot.

If I don't blow my nose and just keep sniffling I end up with a raging headache by the end of the day. Of course, blowing my nose constantly leaves it red, irritated and sore - but I'll take that over a constant headache any day of the week.

Bollocks. A nose properly blown - making that elephant-trumpeting sound - sends sound vibrations throughout the sinus passages, causing the tissues to expand and contract thus loosening them and expanding the airways. (Yes I know that trumpeting sound is awful; do it in the restroom or some private place.)

Other than that, only use a saline nasal spray. Any other type of spray either has bounce-back effect making things worse, or has the potential to be addictive.

If you are really bad and have an infection of the sinuses or are likely to get one: fark those descriptions.
To quote my ENT: it's the lesser of two evils, the more important thing is to get oxygen into the sinuses.

The way I usually do it:
0. Get a 2nd spray dosed for children; use whichever depending on seriousness of clogging
1. When the spray has cleared the nose (maybe 5 minutes after using it, assisted by some cold water), use a nasal douche with saline solution to get things moving
2. Repeat step 1 as necessary
3. Use an oil and/or Bepanthene after the douche (oil makes you feel less congested

That, plus Eucalyptus oil capsules (Soledum here; US name seems to be SinuCheck).

RminusQ: You don't blow your nose so that you get less sick, you blow it so that you can farking BREATHE.

Well, blowing your nose can help keep you less sick. Sniffling creates a mist of infected material and sends it efficiently into your lungs, which can then get infected. Most of the time I need to blow my nose, I already have a sinus infection, so blowing isn't going to hurt that.

No prob. . . word of warning, though. If you don't first go someplace private, applying Carmex to the rim of your nostrils looks very much like you're picking your nose. Also, the menthol can make a runny nose worse, though that's not always a bad thing.

LoneWolf343: GAT_00: That nasal spray shiat has severely diminishing returns.  First use works great, but it's effectiveness lessens after every dose.  Not only that, but after you stop using it you have a day where your congestion is even worse than before as your sinuses try to rebalance.

Or at least that's my experience.

Not to mention that they have really bad side effects if they are used too long, which I learned the hard way.

/3 years, off and on.
//Dizzy spells and heart palpitations are not fun.

My dad used them frequently, and now has no sense of smell, which has also affected his sense of taste. I will not ever use them, except plain saline spray.

dragonchild: You know that Carmex stuff? There's no law saying you can only use it on your lips.

Not only will blowing not work, studies show that forceful nose blowing can propel some infection-laden mucus into the sinuses, where secondary bacterial infections may take hold.

That doesn't even make sense. You are blowing OUT, not in.

/bc surgery
//it sucks
///will be blowing as soon as I can

BTDT. The itching was unbearable at times from the stitches inside my nose. I put the surgery off for years, but I am so glad I finally did it.

I agree that you shouldn't blow your nose forcefully, but I wrote off the rest of the article as complete and utter bullshiat when they said that decongestants work better than steam. Decongestants put me on a one-way track to an ear infection.

doczoidberg: I don't like blowing my nose into tissue paper.

It's so nasty.

Instead, I blow my nose into a dish towel. Either that, or I straight up BLOW it with nothing in front of my face at all. I just shoot snot all over the bathroom mirror or shower.

It's pretty satisfying.

I like to blow snot rockets in the shower too.

Bronchitis for me.

Assuming they don't just do jack squat apart from making me feel like I'm a bobblehead for hours.

Neti pot and Homeopathic nasal spray w/sea salt added.
For you nonbelievers out there, that equates to distilled water with sea salt added. Also known as saline.

/if you're cheap, just buy the packages marked "Saline nasal spray" but it's sooo much better to buy homeopathic nasal spray and add sea salt too it.
//homeopathic medicine is the best kind of water.
///no really, it's the best 50$ you can spend on 1 oz of distilled water
////don't look at me like that.
