First thing I though of, except I was thinking of a Nova SS.

I wonder how many people really understand that.  But he's learning the importance of repeating simple truths to drive the point home.

so lets see: now the GOP is going to add old people to their list of people they're pissing off.  this is in addition to women, young people, gays, and people making less than $250k a year.

hmm.

interesting way to run a country.  did they WANT to get kicked out of office?

Too bad there isn't a seperate account with money in it to draw from that has nothing to do with the anual budget....

Because SS funding is not in a separate fund that is unaffected by things which affect the rest of the federal budget....a "lockbox", if you will....

"Honey, we need to cut down on our credit card spending. It's gotten out of control."

"You're right, but we need some of this. Let's have a talk about what to use our credit card for, and how much debt we should actually carry."

"I think we shouldn't use credit cards at all. Until you agree to cut your spending down to what I want, we're not paying our credit card bills! Not one dime! That'll show'em!"

Yep. If Congress doesn't like the size of our debt they can take it up with the people who set tax rates and the Federal budget.

2013-01-14 03:26:35 PM
Lets see that big list of cuts you'll make before we talk about a new ceiling.

Good one, subby. Very clever.

2013-01-14 03:28:08 PM
Wow. If only there were some nighttime event where the Republicans and the President could get together and sort out their differences over the SS. Some sort of meeting over a carnivorous dinner that would require long knives in order to cut to pieces and consume.

/I think you mean the SA, Submitter.

So my wife comes into the living room while I am watching Green bay get whipped up on and say "we need to pay our credit card."

I said "Pay the damn thing"

she "We don't have enough money."

her mother, half in the bag, say "Stop spending so much on the credit card."

Me " Well we have to pay at least the minimum to keep our credit good. Do we have another card we can put it on?"

Mother in law " I said stop putting things on the credit cards"

Me "You both need to get jobs"

Them "Put in on the discover card. you get cash back."

starve old people, cut all government services to everyone everywhere forever, and no more regulation for anyone under any circumstances.  you know...the usual GOP stuff.

I am afraid that the old people (and I know I am generalizing, but look at the demographics of Fox News) will blame Obama.  When I said something to my father about having to stretch a check that is over $100/month less, he told me to "thank Obama, who (I) stupidly voted for."  Though I'd love to see all of these idiots, especially the Tea Party people, to get voted out of office post-haste for pissing off the entire country. There's only so many multi-millionaires....

I actually did that one time, refused to pay them a dime until they lowered my rate. It worked, trashed my rating though, but I got a 2% interest payment plan.

By SS does this mean Social Security or does it mean SSI or both?

Congress addressing the debt ceiling is like the fat lady on the scale yelling at the bathroom mirror for eating too damn much.

The Federal government is still taking in money. Pass a bill that keeps up with the payments on the debt and writing checks that are already funded like SS. There is probably some left over to meet soldiers payroll. If there is anything left, fund what you can until there is no more money.

With the bullshiat political moves off the table, maybe there can be some meaningful negotiations.

I have a better idea for the house GOP, stop writing checks to the members of the military. Most of them won't care and it's not like they are armed or anything.

And this, and all other Federal employees.

Should be fun. I'm thinking...Brazil. Brazil would be a good place to visit, don't you think?

This!

They are projecting that even though the trust fund started paying out more than it is taking in in 2010 that the interest the fund accrues is enough that the fund will continue to grow until 2025. They are bringing in enough money through taxes that social security, for which tax receipts are accounted for separately, will be able to pay the benefits that they need to pay. It is a scare tactic for President Obama to suggest that social security checks wouldn't continue to go out if the debt ceiling wasn't increased, and it also happens to be dishonest. There are a lot of things that would be affected but social security payments would not be among them.

The money has been apparently allocated, but not spent. You can fool some of the people all of the time, apparently, i.e. I believe that these are not bills, they are budgeted (or whatever passes for a budget nowadays)

That was my understanding as well. I think its just trying to get ahead of the inevitable scare tactics that will come out from the other side. Sad that this the political discourse, but I'm not sure it was ever that much better.

Anytime there is a Government money shortage it always seems to affect Social Security or pay for police officers / fire fighters.

All this time I thought Social Security was designed to ALWAYS have money in it, how good did that work out and what promise do we have that the Government won't tear into healthcare
funds like wolves into dog food?.

Just once I would like to see our elected leaders come clean and say "If we don't raise the debt ceiling we can't spend money!"

Right now, about half the country will vote Republican no matter what. The GOP could send out representatives to sodomize their voters with hot pokers while singing "My Humps", and they'd still get votes.

Now, the GOP may be destroying their future by alienating everyone, but right now, they're still in the game.
