My best friend is divorcing a Brazilian man-hopper he married.  She's not nearly as interesting as this freak of nature.

This is a lame rewrite of a two year old blog post that finally triggered the neuron in the Gawker network to condense it without adding value.

Treehoppers pretend to be twigs and thorns. It's what they do. We had a link a year or two ago when scientists discovered that a treehopper's crest is actually a modified third set of wings.

Not really scary.  It looks like something you'd draw a circle around in Okami to make the tree on its head bloom.

Unless it's called a treehopper because its size relative to a grasshopper is the same as a full-grown tree is to a blade of grass.

I have to ask, what the hell is that? Is it a shoop? Is it real? What is it from? Checking out the image file / name didn't shed any light. It's rare that someone comes up with a real challenge of an image, and dammit, I have to know more.

Znuh

It's a shop. Started about a decade ago with some dude photoshopping the center portion of a strange looking flower onto some woman's areola, which gave rise to the whole "blue-waffle" meme. This is one of the derivatives.

Apparently, the reason why it's so popular is there is a common revulsion/phobia of holey surfaces, which causes photoshops like this and their associated real-life phenomena to capture the imagination of it's viewers so completely.

Correction, not blue waffle. I can't recall the exact term for the original shop anymore, but it's originally from a blue flower, hence my confusion.

Blue lotus seed pods I think.

It's well done. It seriously causes juuuust enough revulsion to not thoroughly examine the image at first glance. Thanks!
