Can we blockade the island and prevent all trade from reaching there?  I want to see what the rich version of Lord of the Flies looks like.

Step 1: Let them do it. Step 2: Pretend they have WMD's, invade them for "national security reasons", and take all their stuff. Step 3: Profit.

That sounds fine, but it's worth far more than $1B to them. Extract at least $5B

Let me guess, it's the US military's responsibly to protect them. Let me guess, if they get hit by a hurricane it's the US government's responsibility to rebuild. Let me guess...

Didn't they already try this? ANd low and behold it costed a lot of money then they thought and people were ripping them off (yeah no laws!)

Why not Somailia?

Oh right, you want the safety and security of living in a society without having to actually pay for it.

I love all these Job Creators (all the blessings of Baal be upon their holy personages) acting like society will give two shiats if they go Galt. By all means, leave. You'll be replaced within a year. Innovation isn't the exclusive domain of the moneyed elite.

Let me guess; the rich would also be able to buy forgiveness for their crimes if they're committed against one of the serving class.

And really? Only 20 percent of the population would be people that have less then 300k sitting around to buy citizenship?

2013-01-14 02:27:54 PM
No, guys, that's not the real plan.  The real plan is to make a great-sounding pitch, put $30 million into city coffers now, and another $10 million into the right politicians' pockets, and you get all the rights and deeds you want...then you announce that the thing is belly-up and needs a billion dollars in taxpayer assistance.  Twenty years and several hundred million dollars later, nothing has changed, so the city gets all the rights and deeds back for $1.  "Never again!" the citizens shout, just before they do it all again.

But a new handful of people now have their own private islands...in the Caribbean, the plan all along.

Generally the ones with the money and desire to "go Galt" only made their money off the backs and ideas of other people; they haven't contributed anything themselves but the starting capital.

Yes. Let all the rich people leave to create a utopia that would be impossible without the close proximity of Canada and the US. I'd rather see them try this off the coast of Africa, where Big Brothers can't keep them safe and provide disaster relief and implicit military support. Also, it's probably not a good idea to let all those tax dollars leave the country like that.

I believe the four boundary waters lakes and their connecting waters are still considered international waters, but not in the monkey-fighting sense of the phrase.

How many Galtropolises does that make this week?

Free market utopia right?
so there would be no laws restricting trade, right??

You know what? I was thinking about this the other day. I can get the point of individual economic freedom, but people who think corporations should be unfettered economically out of some sort of natural law should rethink their positions. Corporations are not naturally occurring - they are, by definition, a government construct. You say you, personally, should be free to discriminate in your business, free to not pay taxes or whatever, fine. But a corporation is a special government privilege that removes liability. You're getting special dispensation to not risk your own house, your own money, your items when you form a distinct corporation. You're risking less by special favor of the government, so, you know what? You get to play by the government's rules.

"We are among the people looking for answers to the city's problem," said Rodney Lockwood, a Bingham Farms developer who is the driving force behind the idea.

Uh huh... So you're "solution" to the city's problems (quite serious problems I'm assuming) is to create a secluded haven for the wealthiest people (and some tokens) to live without fear of having to deal with the poor and be free from any responsibility for their fellow citizens' well-being?

I'm starting to think it would be fun to hunt the wealthy for sport...

There are American waters, then Canadian waters off Detroit. There are no international waters.

Ecobuckeye: Philip Francis Queeg: There aren't any international waters off Detroit.

I don't think so. There's an international boundary that runs right through the center of them. That's not to say that there's not substantial cooperation between US and Canadian authorities in patrolling areas relatively close to the boundary, but there's no place where both nations lack jurisdiction.

I think this is fascinating -- mostly because it lives up to nearly every negative stereotype attached to the rich. It's like they're comic book villians.

I don't see how there will be any laws period. Without taxes, who will pay the cops? Or will the cops just do it out of the goodness of their hearts? Who will pay for the jail cells to hold the law breakers? Or the Judge to judge them? Or the court system in general? Or the.... (ad nauseum)

I'm generally not in favor of war, especially war for resources, but the sovereign nation of Galt Island is just asking for it.

Except for the hurricane thing, I'm going to say you are right. And I will add that they are more than likely going to require the U.S to maintain their infrastructure, their schools, police force and I bet all of those "citizens" living there will also likely try to draw SS and other benefits from the United States.

Power, water, trash pickup, sewage.... a billion dollars ain't buyin' fark all for 35,000 people.

Obnoxious people living in a closed community seem to have a tendency for forgetting that their upscale electronic devices are powered by the same electricity source as that of the dirty peasants they hate so much.

Not only that. They don't have the perspective or the forethought to really take a hard look at their plans and ask some tough questions. Where will their food come from? Who will till the fields? Certainly not one of them, they're far too important and innovative to do such degrading work. If they hire workers/buy slaves aren't they tacitly admitting that they need the little people more than the little people need them? Wouldn't importing goods be admitting the same thing? And that's just food.

What of energy, of infrastructure, of water, of sanitation (you think any of these people would work in a sewage plant?), of communications, of emergency services, etc. etc. What of basically everything that happens in the background of society to keep it running smoothly so these captains of innovation can make gobs of money moving capital around on a giant spreadsheet?

tl; dr; version: look up the Bob The Angry Flower cartoon, Atlas Shrugged 2: 2 hours later.

I find it ironic that a bunch of libertarian, boot-strap capitalist 1% percenters want to set-up a 'free city' - and then call it a 'Commonweath.'

Jeez.
