Icing the kicker does not work.

Pete Carroll f*cked this one up on his own.

Great ending to a game, though.

You got a friendly call from the refs that won you a game earlier in the season.

This is just the refs taking that game back.

I thought the snap was well after the whistle and Bryant knew it was a timeout. It would be tough to punish the kicker, what are you going to call? Delay of game? A timeout has just been called so that is a stretch.

If Carroll didn't want him to kick it he should have called time out earlier, not that I believe in icing the kicker any way.

In a game that talks about "sportsmanship" etc I am surprise than icing the kicker is tolerated.

Anyways, fark Pete Carroll. He used to be the defensive coordinator for the Jest, and he was a little dick back then, running up and down the field like an annoying mascot. The choke sign on Stoyo was icing on the cake...made beautiful by the fact that Stoyo did eventually win that game.

I'm glad his sportsmanship worked out for him this time, too.

/Sorry, Russell Wilson...you played a hell of a game.

Icing the kicker is not poor sportsmanship. It's a waste of time...usually.

Of all the teams in the league, the Seahawks are the last ones that should be complaining about the officiating after the potato refs awarded them a game that Green Bay had won.

In fact, ESPN Stats & Information says that since 2001, iced kickers made 74.5 percent of kicks, while those not iced in that span made 81.6 percent.

Feel bad for Wilson. Classy kid, lots of talent, plays his ass off.

However, LOL at Sherman. That POS, along with DeAngelo Hall, should be locked in a room with a grizzly. Pro-tip fellas: doing your freaking job on a routine play is not cause for trash talking or celebration. CBs are just WRs who can't catch, anyway.

Sherman was hung out to dry by Chancellor on the play. He had been exceptional up to that point, playing the way you expect an All-Pro to. Even the best CBs in the league give up a TD to HOF quality receivers sometimes.

You can't really block a team from taking a timeout in that situation.  There are legitimate reasons you might need to take a timeout.

Carroll said during his post-game press conference that he was miffed because he had been told before the game that, under those circumstances, the kicker would not be allowed to kick the ball.

Not quite. It works in college, when a walk-on, freshman kicker from Smalltown, USA is standing in the middle of 70k+ screaming maniacs and then has more time to think about how missing the kick will exacerbate his virginity.

Beyond that, the timeout just before the snap is dumb. It gives the guy 2 chances. Pros just treat it like a practice shot.

My point was that the level of trash talk is stupid and just makes him look worse when he does get burned. Knocking down a pass intended for a WR is the least of his job. At least pick it off before spouting off and carrying on like a child.

I thought the 4th and 1 in the second was the worse call. Had we kicked a FG instead, things may have turned out differently. Hell, if we had played well during the first half it would have been different.

Oh well, we're young and have a great QB. Next season we're taking the NFC West title.

This loss might be the best thing that happened to the Seahawks. Outside of Lynch, RW is probably the only offensive player the national media even notices, but their defense in general has been heralded as the second coming whenever the Seahawks do get talked about. Guess what; they aren't.

I have no problem with Sherman's "chirpyness" or anything like that, but in what I count as the 4th road loss this year I would hang ENTIRELY on their defense (If you want to blame Carroll because of the timeout, then add the disclaimer with it that you just aren't counting any of the first three quarters of that game), this should be a hell of a wake up call to them. The entire North American continent watched this defense sh*t the bed. For their sake, I hope they chew on that on all offseason, because that will make them better in the long run.

Which is great, except for the fact that he never said he didn't call timeout, he was upset because he TOLD the refs he was going to do it, and the Falcons snapped the ball and took a practice FG well after the whistle blew.

I'm pretty sure the entire viewing audience was screaming "WTF?" at that one. Not down by much, easy 3 points to be had, time isn't a factor at all...that was the sort of crap one pulls in Tecmo Bowl.

If only my aunt had balls, I'd have two uncles. If RG3 doesn't blow up his knee the Redskins would have crushed Seattle. If Matty Ice Cold doesn't throw that ridiculous interception up 20 the game isn't even that close. If we make up scenarios we can then pretend the outcome would have been the one we wanted.

Anyway this is barely whining in Seattle terms. If they're still butthurt about it in 10+ years like the Super Bowl, then it will qualify as Seattle whining.

The call I speak of is a combination of 4 or 5 terrible calls/non-calls ON THAT DRIVE ALONE. The whole 2nd half of that game was bullshiat both ways. The game cannot possibly be said to have hinged on one lone bad call.

Clearly limiting mistakes and clock management are important parts of the game. Chalk a lot of those problems to a rookie QB and inexplicable coaching decision NOT to kick a FG early in the game. At the end of the first half, ATL was clearly conceding a FG... to come away with nothing because of not realizing how many TO's you have, how many downs there are, and how much time is left on the clock is inexcusable at this level.

That said, ATL has a great offense, and they looked rather pedestrian compared to what SEA unleashed on them. They were pretty much unstoppable after a slow start. And their defense is great too. I'd go as far as to say I think Seattle is the scariest, and possibly most talented team in the NFL. And I'm not a Seattle fan. Look out next year.

2013-01-14 02:43:27 PM
I think icing the kicker is dumb. It seems a fair trade to me that if you're going to ice the kicker, you need to be OK with him taking a practice shot. Maybe it will help bring about the end of icing.

2013-01-14 02:44:25 PM
As a Seahawks fan and a realist, the refs were absolutely not to blame for the loss. What killed us is not taking the chip shot field goal on 4th and 1, Lynch never getting the run game established, our pass rush never being a factor except for one play where Ryan proceeded to throw an interception, our defense allowing them to get into field goal range in the span of about 20 seconds, and Carroll's foolish timeout call at the end. Oh well. Russell Wilson is an incredible young QB that's going to have us in contention for years to come. We'll be back and better next season.

Should there have been a penalty on Atlanta? The refs can't very well run out and block the kick.

/Not snarky, really curious whether there was some blown call here (e.g. "delay of game" for kicking the ball away?)

They can call Delay, but they never would - especially in the playoffs on a game-deciding kick that would be moved past 50 yards.

How would you ever know? If he's iced and misses it, he might have missed it anyway. If he's iced and and makes it, he might have made it anyway.

Bottom line: icing the kicker is dumb.
