They should really watch their terminology. A lot of anti-GMA people will see "hybrid" and froth at the mouth, completely forgetting about the process of crossbreeding.

i believe that most chickens are bred to be either layers or fryers, so to speak. FTA, the big thing is that these cluckers are supposed to be able to thrive on agricultural waste, no special feed.

No kidding. Technically, they're not hybrids. Just a new breed, developed (I'm assuming) by crossing existing breeds in order to get a more efficient multi-purpose chicken. That's not exactly a new practice.

I'd bet the native chickens are Game chickens best used for fighting. They have mixed up some Barred Rocks, Orpingtons and what not with leghorns to get a bird that lays well and has some meat on its bones. You can just about floss your teeth with the meat from a game chicken. And they are seasonal layers at best.

Subby doesn't understand how livestock works. That's ok because most people "nowadays" don't.

Some are meant to be roasters, but a good fryer will do. The grading system is in German. I learned it in French, while Speaking Spanish.
Yes, I worked in a chicken plant. Mostly, I boiled chicken in steam kettles.
We would use the same broth over and over, sometimes, and get this beautiful heavy broth that could cure a farking cold if you drank a quart of it hot.

The difference between layers and fryers is an industrial world distinction that places like Uganda don't bother with. The big thing is that these chickens lay more, have a higher body weight, lower mortality rate and can be fed anything.

Wow. If only they pissed beer, they'd be the perfect food.

I guess raising buff orpingtons is not as profitable to agribusiness as it is to introduce a "new" kind of chicken.

Prove me wrong

They are byproducts - not meat. Boogers are not meat. Feathers are not meat. Wool is not meat.

Also, your mom is a vegetarian and she swallows, so not meat.

"It performs very well under scavenging management system and has been genetically selected to provide both meat and eggs and is able to survive and thrive on agricultural and household waste, requiring no additional feed."

Yardbirds.

Sneakytoes: Fritriac: Most hybrid chicken don't procreate. Let's see if the chicken breeders are still happy after they realised that.

It's not that kind of hybrid.  They're still chickens, not a cross between a chicken and a turkey or something.

What about a turken

(No, it's not a turkey/chicken cross just their name)

I'm no chicken expert, but I have 4 Black Jersey Giant hens. They are supposedly meat birds but they lay an egg a day each. I thought all chickens forage & eat scraps.

Is that the technical word for letting it wander around the village?

I raised broilers for meat over the summer, free range.  It seemed cruel to raise chickens that grew so fast that they developed health problems, but the alternative was worse.  The "dual purpose" chickens that I raised before them were much friendlier, but ended up so small that it took two of them to feed my family of six.  I'll take killing one ugly dull-normal chicken over killing two cute lap chickens any day.
