All snark aside, that was pretty cool. I didn't think you could get the resolution to print an audio groove, however low-fi. But it was actually recognizable as "Smells Like Teen Spirit".

Wouldn't the point of this be to make the record out of something more durable than vinyl?

I like it. Download and print your records, and print new ones when they wear out.

I don't see myself ever owning a record player again, but I still think this is neat Frankenlog technology.

Yeah... a wee bit outside of my price range at the moment. Their multi-color one looks good, but again... $2500 is more than I can drop on something like that right now. Last big expenditure for a piece of hardware for me was a Wacom Cintiq 12wx, which cost me $1000.

One of the hardware stores is offering 3D printing these days... haven't checked into their pricing. Also, they're using the paper/layer technique, which I'm not that keen on. I'd prefer polymer printing.

Whoa... just looked and cubify's pricing on the ABS cartridge is $50 per cartridge (with lowered prices on bulk orders)... yeesh.

The purposes of the paper model are for business demonstration purposes. You can show off what your product will look like, its not functional, but its cheap to make and can easily be disposed of as well.

Actually, you need to check the CD's of 5 year olds. At least based on what I've seen them do to DVD's.

It's an analogue recording reproduced digitally. No, wait. The information the printer was given was digital so it's an analogue representation of digital ....aaarrrrgggh my head is exploding

Impractical to whom? Records have been the medium of choice for DJs up until the last few years as CDDJs became better and finally the appearance of programs like Traktor and Ableton Live.

Sadly, digital has pretty much turned the art of DJing on its head. It doesn't take skill and practice any more, anyone can get up there and fake it. And many do. Skrillex, Deadmau5, and so many other twits wouldn't be able to mix records to save their lives.

Anyway, as interesting a possibility as it is to print your own records, I can't imagine it being practical. A 24/96 vinyl rip of a 12" single is anywhere from 300-500 MB. I'd imagine something like this needing several gigs to have decent sound quality.

So to assemble enough for a DJ set could take anywhere from a week to a month, need several TBs worth of storage. Yeah, not going to happen. Nowadays you can download enough for a DJ set with an hour or two, set it all up in Live and be ready to go that night.

As much as I'd like vinyl to make a comeback in DJing, it's not going to happen.

I bet that would sound better with a $1500 pure copper braided cable with solid gold connections hooked to the authentic vaccuum tube speakers.

Did anyone else thing the "fuzz" on top of Teen Spirit sounded like the background noise frequently heard on Numbers Stations?

Apparently some paper processes produce a wood-like appearance, that might be great for some stuff.

Could 3D printed records lead to a new form piracy in the future? Ghassaei thinks not. She says, "It would be a huge amount of effort to go to. I can't imagine this is what the technology would be used for."
