Meh.  Call me back when they're cleaning the alcohol out of your blood.  (No idea if this would work - but it could be awesome - go on a major bender, 2:30am bar closes, 3:30am you're sober and could drive home)

2013-01-14 12:05:46 AM
a combination of IV fluids, vitamins, and medications.

If only there were some way to get all those things into your body without an IV.

Hair of the dog. The only thing that works.

I can't help but think that this is going to cause a dramatic increase in alcohol poisoning. Because when I was young and stupid often the only thing that stopped me from drinking more was the thought of how horrible I would feel the next day.

Bucky Katt: Hair of the dog. The only thing that works.

Bailed my ass out on New Years day. I woke up, was still slightly drunk but I had that feeling that a massive hangover was incoming. I drank a few mimosas with breakfast and took a short nap and I was good.

We didn't have those fancy 'hangover clinics' that cure you in an hour

And I am thankful for that. Terrifying to think what we might have achieved without some days off for hangovers. Back in my day drinking age was 18 and no one cared, there were open grain punch parties everywhere.

Aspirin works fine for me.

2013-01-14 05:59:30 AM
I find that if I can make it to a shower and get dressed then the worst has passed. If I then had to go through the effort of getting to a clinic i'm sure i'd be feeling much better than if i'd stayed in bed all day, and that's before being hooked up to anything. If I have a hangover but still have something important to do I try to do as much vigorous activity as possible, because my theory is that if I get the blood pumping it somehow clears away the hangover. No idea if it's true or not, but it feels true.

That and water, lots of water, and aspirin.

Whatever happened to finding a liquor that didn't make you feel like shiat the next day and drinking that all evening?

Whisky leaves me feeling fine the next day. Beer, not so much. So I stick with the whisky.

There's been a mobile hangover clinic in Vegas for years now. Alternatively, one could hydrate and take a multivitamin before bed and immediately upon waking. Or avoid the "shot! shot! shot!" scene.

2013-01-14 06:30:02 AM
Since you've probably got the shiats anyway wouldnt a 2L enema loaded with vitamins and minerals be much much cheaper? I mean it could be right there in the soda aisle ... coke.... pepsi.....7-up......"ass blaster" recovery enema 2 for $6.... what a deal.

Bad idea. Home Enemas can actually worsen electrolyte imbalance because it sucks potassium, sodium, phosphate, magnesium, and calcium out of your blood stream. One that large can also irritate your colon and cause colitis. In addition, the large intestine is a poor way to get nutrition.

Most people don't find the idea of taking large quantities of liquid in the bum to be pleasureful.

Popcorn Johnny: We were doing this 25 years ago while I was in the Army.

CSB time:

A few years back I played in a late spring/early summer rugby tournament in Virginia Beach with my club team. We had a former player of our stationed nearby. He brought some of his buddies and a box of IV packs (I'm sure acquired through legal means) from the medical supply office on base. They were giving themselves IVs between matches because it was so damn hot and muggy, but we also used them to cure the hangovers we had to play the Sunday matches. That's the first thing I though of when I read the headline here.

It's done in the ER and is called dialysis. Usually only the most severe alcohol poisoning cases get that treatment. (Along with having your stomach pumped you'll walk away stone-cold sober and ravenous.)

I've heard the company in Las Vegas does a lot of business. Hey, If your in Vegas, why waste half your vacation in the bathroom puking. Party till 3 or 4 in the morning, sleep a few hours, and instead of being miserable the next day, get fixed up so that you can be back to partying by noon. Hell, turns a normal 4 day weekend into an epic 96 hour marathon of debauchery.

thats not right. isnt that supposed to be "in the clear"?

The german expression: Wein auf Bier, das rate ich Dir. Bier auf Wein lass es sein. "Wine on top of beer ill advise that to you, beer on top of wine, leave it be" implies that once you "upgrade" your alc% its a bad idea to turn around and go back down. I will trust germans in this regard.

As someone who doesn't get hangovers, why would I even bother?

CSB - My bachelor party: I'm passed out in the showering around 3am after spending an hour or so vomiting on myself. I wake everyone up for breakfast around 8am and we're off to whitewater rafting for the rest of the day. Most of my friends thought they were going to sleep in because there was just "no way I would be able to raft after that night."

Way back when I did a combat lifesaver course in the Army and we learned how to administer an IV. They had to take all of the IV bags out of the kits because guys were giving them out in the barracks on the weekend after an all night bender.

So yea, if you can get yourself an IV bag, they work pretty damn well.

2013-01-14 07:41:19 AM
Or you could simply not drink so much as to put yourself at risk for a hangover...

CRAZINESS, I KNOW

My roomie at Ft Stewart was banging a few medics and would get IV bags from them. We were all combat lifesaver certified as well. And like you said, on a Saturday morning we'd give each other IVs and lay around until we started feeling good enough to start drinking again. Our apartment looked like an emergency room with all the IV bags hanging in it.

A bunch of us wanted to make our own Army recruitment commercials based on what it was really like. One commercial would be someone buffing a hallway for hours on end. Another a guy sitting at a phone all night. All of them would end though with everyone passed out everywhere from over drinking.

Ha! We talked about that too, except we had people parachuting in with buffers strapped to their backs, guys digging holes only to refill them, move a few feet and start digging again, and guys getting tangled up in camo netting.

No Thiamine? I'm just a lowly EMT-B but I thought you needed that along with the D50 for hypoglycemic drunks in case of Wernicke Encephalopathy?

Two pints of water and a couple of aspirin before you go to bed.

This isn't hard people.

They got tired of providing their employees with hangover cures was the real reason they took it off. The State of Tennessee no longer mandates it be carried because actual cases of Wernicke's Encephalopathy are pretty rare here. I don't even think Mississippi makes you have it anymore.

Their argument for us was "You're 15 minutes from any hospital with it. Just drive."

And you're not a "lowly" EMT-B. You're an EMT, and an important part of the team. That's a pet peeve I have. :)

you can train yourslef to always have the last thing you drink before going to bed a pint of water. then you wake up 2 hrs later still drunk and having to pee. drink as much water as you can at this point, take a vitamin, and like 4 ibuprophen. every time you wake up to pee, drink more water. sure you dont get a great nights rest and arent the most rested you can be but youll not be too hung over.

this will go a long way to treating all but the most serious of abuses with the worst kind of hooch.
