Yeah, I saw Hellraiser, too.

Well, that might be the first SHMHC in some time that featured a newer group that didn't suck horribly.

/no point in watching the video, though

Hmmm, I don't dislike it.

The iTunes Store only has an EP...is that all they currently have out?

Really? You guys like this? I kept waiting for something interesting to happen. Watched a few clips on their YouTube channel and it all seems much the same. Boring, no solos, lethargic singing, no stage presence. I guess this is just not for me.

Help you? Ok I'll contribute to the fund. So what is it you want? Guitar lessons or singing lessons? Both are obviously badly needed.

Meh, standard lethargic gloomy type metal, at least the singer wasn't a barking dog with broken glass in his throat. I prefer my metal to be a bit more energetic.

lethargic is a good descriptor.

some good things to listen to, if you're inclined -

Necrowretch - Ripping Souls of Sinners (death)
Vomit of Doom - Woman in Eternal Darkness (extreme thrash)
Devourment - Fifty Ton War Machine (video; NSFW!)
Embalmed (Mexico) - Leviathan Rises (black/death - this will crush you)
Acherontas - Blood Current Illumination (black- the whole album is fantastic)

And this is really worth checking out - download it for free and support leprosy patients in Iran (I don't know how that works, but it can't hurt more than leprosy...): Scox

/one more for the road:
Wight - Through the Woods into Deep Water (stoner doom)

Welcome to doom metal, where talent for building decent songs trumps the bangbangbangtaptaptapscreeeeescreeee of 90% of death metal out there. As far as no stage presence, it's a farking video, what do you want?

So wait, black, death and gloom are the only valid styles of metal?

Oh I'm a metal fan, but more a fan of older styles of metal. Thrash (Slayer, Anthrax, old school Metallica), NWOBHM (Judas Priest, Maiden, Diamond Head, Motorhead, etc), some of the odd progressive metal of the 90s (Queensryche, Dream Theater, etc), some symphonic metal (Nightwish, Epica, etc), some of what's sometimes called "groove metal" (Pantera, Sepultura, etc) and varied bands that I don't know what they'd be classified under. The problem with so many modern metal bands of varied styles is they can play great music but have utter shiat vocals. All growling like a dog? Yeah replace the singer. Screeching like Dani Filth? Replace his ass. Granted that's just MHO, but trying to say I don't like metal because I don't enjoy a few branches of it is ridiculous.

Well, from your list, I recognize that you like types of "metal," but I've never really considered many of those groups to be relevant much anymore. Now, believe me when I say that pretty much 90% of everything produced today is absolute crap, but if you can't listen to Emperor or Immortal or even Paradise Lost, then you really need to qualify your definition of "metal" a bit.

I, too, grow tired of shiatty vocals, and shiatty bands, but I've never considered Nightwish or Queensryche to be "metal," but more along the rock/hard rock line, much like Rush or Voivod.

I haven't met many metal fans who at least don't like one of those big three. This dude may not be, and he doesn't seem to be, so that's that. Either way, I never said that this group was a wonderful one, but I did note that they didn't suck horribly like almost every SHMHC for the past three months. It was a step up, but they aren't that great.

I can see your point on Nightwish and Queensryche, but the 3 bands you just listed (Emperor, Immortal, Paradise Lost) from what I can tell after listening to them would likely be listed under black metal. Are you really trying to say black metal is the only valid metal out there? Sorry but that kind of stuff just isn't to my taste. I guess I'm just not metal enough for you. I'll stick to enjoying my other varied styles.

On that note, he did say something that was accurate. Most of the bands I enjoy aren't considered relevant. I'm always up for suggestions for modern bands with decent metal chops but clean or at least more than just growls for vocals. What's out there these days that fits the bill?

It's extremely difficult to find decent bands fitting those specifications - a lot of the 'clean' vocals have shifted towards Power Metal.

They don't necessarily need to be totally clean, just more clean than there is growls. Is there much out there say like Iced Earth, 5 Finger Death Punch (yeah yeah they aren't metal, they suck, blah blah), or other bands where they manage to balance the growls with clean, or at least semi clean.

I don't listen to much music with growls, but I make exceptions for Opeth (most albums) and Orphaned Land (ORWarrior) because the vocals serve the music and they have a good balance of clean and growl. Might be worth checking them out if you haven't already.

Just keep an eye out for when I post things, I don't have my list handy. They -are- out there, but it takes a bit of work to find them and some float in and out of various genres. Metal has been polarized a bit.

Two great review sites are dangerdog.com and progmetalzone.com. I don't think the former does any harsh vocals, the latter will warn you when it does.

My recent favorite that has a very modern sound is Aviations There's not a lot of djent out there with clean vocals, but this band does both and they do a great job of keeping a strong sense of melody with a big ambient influence. Also some progressive influences, and one song breaks out into straight out jazz for a time. Which is what you would expect from a group of guys from Berklee.

I have heard some buzz around Demon Lung for a while now, but this is the first I've heard the music. It's pretty underwhelming. i like the female vocals, but the riffs are just recycled from the post-Pantera new wave of american metal scene, and slowed to doom tempos. the production is too modern and slick-sounding to pull a good atmosphere around the riffs. this is about as true doom as a Zakk Wylde album in my opinion.

i just discovered WHIRLING from Sweden. They released an album 'Faceless Phenomena' in 2010. They are basically a note-for-note homage to idiosyncratic sound of Ved Buens Ende's classic 1995 album 'Written In Waters,' along with some nods to the post-VBE bands Code and Virus, and with a blackened rock vibe throughout. The sound is jangly and dissonant mid-paced black metal riffs with lazy, jazzy drums and bass guitar lumbering a winding path underneath. drunken baritone goth vocals sway along side hoarse echoing grimness. it's extremely derivative, but lovers of this particular niche of avant garde metal will find a lot to enjoy.

going through my youtube history i really thought Glorior Belli has some of the most striking black metals to offer.
Glorior Belli: The Great Southern Darkness

and then Byzantine is releasing new shizz. they have their own kind of sound, a mix of clean and rough but not really death.
Byzantine: Soul Eraser

12349876: whizbangthedirtfarmer: I, too, grow tired of shiatty vocals, and shiatty bands, but I've never considered Nightwish or Queensryche to be "metal," but more along the rock/hard rock line, much like Rush or Voivod.

If you draw the line there, you're putting Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath into the rock category too.

Yep. I do think of Led Zep, at least, as hard rock. What I have seen, and from my experience is that "metal" fans draw from all genres. I don't mind Dream Theater that much, and on my player, you'll find Marduk, OSI, Uncle Acid, Iron Maiden, GWAR, Emperor, and so on. I just think that the "genres" are descriptors, not barriers. If it is good metal, I don't say, "oh look, it's doom metal, so it must suck." There are plenty of doom metal groups that can suck out there of their own accord.

Many of the comments on here remind me of the people who think they're totally hardcore metalheads because they have AC/DC CDs.

All I can say is, you guys really do know your musical genre. I'm honestly pretty impressed!

I like a lot of doom but this band didn't do it for me. One doom band I've been listening to lately is Ahab.

Ahab-The Giant.
Ahab-The Hunt.

Can't say it did much for me.

If you insist on playing contrived pinch harmonics, there's really no need to do them 18 times in the same song.

If a band doesn't have their very own sub-sub-sub genre, they're clearly not worth listening to.

I dug the Lovecraft call out in the beginning....the music was slow and never built to anything in such a long song. I liked the dinosaur thing in the video too....other than that, wouldn't listen or watch again.

whizbangthedirtfarmer: burning_bridge: Really? You guys like this? I kept waiting for something interesting to happen. Watched a few clips on their YouTube channel and it all seems much the same. Boring, no solos, lethargic singing, no stage presence. I guess this is just not for me.

Welcome to doom metal, where talent for building decent songs trumps the bangbangbangtaptaptapscreeeeescreeee of 90% of death metal out there. As far as no stage presence, it's a farking video, what do you want?

Alright, I'll bite. "Talent for decent songs" is subjective. Where you obviously hear Mozart-level genius, I hear the same sort of sounds you expect from a 15 year-old when they first start noodling around on the guitar. And what do I want? I want the band I'm watching to look like they at least give a crap about what they're doing. I'm not saying jump around like idiots all the time but at least look as though you have confidence enough to stand in front of people and that what you're doing is something they might like. They just stood around for the most part. I didn't like it and honestly it looked like they didn't either.

momentous: wow you navel gazing nitwits sure know how to make a thread interesting. to all the complainers, lets see a link or two regarding your taste as there is an entire metal ecosystem to sample from youtube. highzoolander as always is exceptional.

You and the other guy are in the band, right??? lol As I said, not for me. You've got some interest, be happy with that, man. Everyone doesn't have to love you. If that was the case, what would have to be gloomy about? As for my fav metal bands, if I must, I'll go with Manilla Road and Mastodon. Guess I've a thing for bands that begin with the letter m. I look forward to your response where you explain to me that my tastes are weaksauce and how you scoff at my lack of refined metal palate. I will respond with polite amusement while you rage and then continue to listen to things that I like regardless of what you say.
