What difference does it make? Every damn team makes the playoffs anyway. Just make it a gigantic round robin tournament and save the trouble.

I'm not sure why they didn't go with the 7x4 divisional play, with the home-and-homes for the rest of the conference. That made more sense, and, in a shortened season, I think keeping much of the focus within the divisions would have served it better, not to mention bring about some intensity and blood. Also, with this being most likely the last season that the current divisions will exist, it'd make for a nice send-off.

That's a higher percentage than the NCAA basketball tournament, and they take shiat teams too. But you knew it was exaggeration for effect. Or you could be dumber than shiat, which.

I'll use this time to copy something from Bill Simmons' mailbag from Friday. A reader suggested that at the 10:03 mark of every period, the crowd counts down to 10:00, where they chant "Bettman sucks!" much like Senators fans chanted "Alfie" last season. I approve only because it's probably not best to chant "F*ck you Bergman."

/F*ck you Bergman

The NHL lost me after the last strike. This one just piled about 100 more feet of dirt on the rotten mummified corpse that was my love for Hockey.

2013-01-13 02:42:27 PM
At first I was like, oh! When are the Devils coming up to Boston?

Then I was like, fark 'em. I'm finding it really easy to not care.

Besides, I rarely ever pay for NHL tickets. Between late September and the end of January, I have a birthday, wedding anniversary, Chanukah, and Christmas. Tickets to a game are easy no-brainer gifts for my wife to pick up. Sorry, NHL, you're a week too late. She just got me floor seats to the Celtics.

You want me back? Step #1 seriously discounted tickets. Like $30 for club seats.
#2 Everyday of the shortened season, Bergman appears at one game and spends 10 minutes of each intermission in goal, no pads. Fans get to line up for slap shots from the blue line.

Like usual, NBC's schedule is shiat.

They're showing 15 Pittsburgh games - that's right, almost a THIRD of their season. On the other hand, they aren't showing Carolina, Anaheim, Florida, or any of the Canadian teams that aren't Montreal at all. Combine that with other "highlights" like two nationally broadcast Devils at Rangers games in less than a week or three Boston / Montreal games over the course of the season and the usual level of "insight" from Doc Emerick and Pierre McGuire...

Why do we let NBC broadcast hockey, again?

Because nobody else wanted it.

IMDWalrus: Why do we let NBC broadcast hockey, again?

Because it's them or the Hallmark Channel or something. None of the other major networks want a damn thing to do with Bettman's sorry ass anymore.

2013-01-13 03:03:28 PM
The Carolina Hurricane games will be broadcast on the "Who Gives A S**t" Channel

2013-01-13 03:05:04 PM

Because fark you, that's why.

You want to watch Canadian teams, you have HNIC. And why should NBC give national TV support to Florida when they have a hard time getting people actually in the building?

As for Anaheim and Carolina, they weren't playoff teams last year, so why should bad teams get National air time?

NHL being on NBCSN has been great. They did an AMAZING job with the playoffs last year. So again, fark off.

I'm a Rangers fan. Jim Dolan was willing to capitulate and end the lockout early. He didn't care. He knew he was losing more money locking the players out than he would have gotten in the long run.

So with that, I don't mind supporting the Rangers.

If you're a Bruins fan... I wonder how you set foot in the door of the arena.

2013-01-13 03:12:27 PM
I'm stoked that there are so many Bruins games on TV.

I approve of this schedule.

IMDWalrus: Why do we let NBC broadcast hockey, again?

Because they were willing to pay $200 million a year to do it.

And to prove how much of a clusterfark this year is, look at March for the Coyotes.

March 2- vs Anaheim
March 4- vs Anaheim
March 6- @ Anaheim (only other time they play each other- last night of the season)

March 18- @ LA
March 19- @ LA

2 more notes:

1) We need more teams for the Yahoo fantasy league.
League ID#: 48265
League Name: Bergman Goes Down
Password: farkcity

2) Last year, I did alternative standings towards the end of the season showing what would happen if regulation and OT wins were 3 pts and shootout wins were only worth 2. I'll do the same thing for the season for the following setups:

A- International system: Regulation win= 3 pts, OT/SO win= 2 pts, OT/SO loss= 1 pt
B- My system: Reg/OT win= 3, SO win= 2, SO loss= 1
C- Old NHL system: All games that go to shootout are treated as a tie and worth 1 pt
D- Straight up wins and losses

Covering just 3 months should make it easier to do.

15 out of 70 is a third?

EDIT: My apologies, you meant 1/3 of Pittsburgh's season, not a 1/3 of NBC's season schedule. That said, the reason why Pittsburgh is so heavily featured is simple:

1) Love him or hate him, You have one of the best players in the game.

2) People from Pittsburgh and descendants are spread out all over the country. It's just like the Steelers. If you want a better national number, you use a team that has a widespread national fanbase.

Honestly, I don't know. There's rumors of some of the financial backers backing out because of the lockout and some of the BS in dealing with the town of Glendale. I'm hopeful of it getting done in the next week or 2 (it has to be done by Jan. 31), but I'm only slightly more optimistic of the deal getting done in time than I was of there being a season (and I wasn't optimistic of that at all).

That's exactly my problem with the schedule. It would take all of five of those seventy games for NBC to show every team in the league at least once. I'm pretty sure they could have sacrificed a few Pittsburgh, Philly, Rangers, Boston, or Detroit games to sacrifice to make that happen.

In a season where my team won't play half the teams in the league, now I can't even see some of them. That's ridiculous.

desertgeek: 1) We need more teams for the Yahoo fantasy league.

I'm in. I probably can't make the live draft because of work, but I'll set my rankings up and prepare to be at the bottom of the league. :D

Well, let's not act like it's Pittsburgh vs. Pittsburgh in these games. You're seeing other teams. It's just that yes, Pittsburgh is highly featured. If you don't like it, you don't have to watch the national game.

Besides, if you're a hockey fan and didn't like the Flyers/Pens series last year, you're not a fan. Sorry. I don't like EITHER team and I loved watch that series.

I dunno. I thought that series was highly entertaining, but I can understand when people say it was anything but hockey. Both teams forgot that defense and goaltending are facets of the game, and seemed more intent on mugging each other. It was ugly. I happen to like ugliness. I can understand why some people do not.

That's the beauty of the NHL playoffs. It was entertaining and ugly, but you can temper that with some of the play in the West.

Oh, same here. And, it's not like I'm dying to watch too many Carolina Hurricanes v Tampa Bay Lightning games in place of one more likely to be nationally televised, but I would think there's some middle ground from a business perspective when creating these broadcasting schedules between "chock full of stars and known brands" and "showcasing other teams". I think it's fair to say NBCSN is heavily invested in helping to grow the NHL just as much as wanting to make money off it.

The problem with that plan is it involves going to the game. Doesn't that just encourage the bad behavior? But I did like this item further down the column.

Q: Have you realized that if Peyton's Broncos beat the Patriots this year, Tom Brady & the Patriots will most likely have been denied four additional Super Bowls directly because of the Manning brothers? This got me thinking of a movie idea, involving Bill Belichick as an evil mastermind (not too far off from real-life), who creates a time machine and sends Brady back to the 1970s to stop Archie Manning from conceiving his two sons. With all the different time-travel rules the movie could play with, the possiblities are endless. Wouldn't this be a must-own Blu-ray?
-Adam, Lexington, MA

I could see a timeline where the time traveling Brady prevents Archie from fathering Payton and Eli by seducing their mother, but in the process inadvertently becomes their father, which explains why they're as good as they are.

Rank goalies high enough that you'll get them in the first couple of rounds. I haven't done fantasy the last couple of seasons, but I had to do an autodraft once, and I got utterly screwed on goaltending. Apart from the top stars, you can get a lot of interchangeable parts when it comes to skaters. But if you're in a large enough league where there aren't enough top end goalies to go around, beware.

There really has to be. As a Canes fan, even when we were a playoff team the year before, even making a deep run, NBC still ignores us. Jim Ruthorford and Eric Staal must have run over somebody at NBC's cat.

We added Jordan Staal and Alex Semin- this is looking like it's going to be a dramatically improved team, and interesting to watch. Would one NBC game be too much to ask for? How 'bout doing a Pens Canes game instead of one of the other 20 Pens games they're showing? Those have always been great hockey to watch, the styles of both teams combine into a fast and well flowing game. Plus Staal against his old friends adds a personality angle.

I mean, not one game for a team that was one of this offseason's biggest winners? Seriously?

A decent number of games are going to be on the NHL network, which will give them better exposure within the hockey community, but still.

That wasn't my point at all. My point was that NBC is ignoring almost a third of the league for regurgitating the same crap over and over.

No Florida? A team going from one of the worst in the league to winning their division isn't worth a game or two? No Anaheim - no national games for what's probably Teemu's farewell tour? No Carolina? They just picked up Jordan Staal - why not a Canes vs. Penguins game? And how the fark do you justify including bottom-of-the-barrel Montreal four times but not a single game for Vancouver, last year's Presidents' Trophy winner?

The TV schedule farking sucks. NBC is not airing a lot of games that would be (a) easy to market and (b) could have some great storylines because they'd rather keep showing the same handful of Eastern Conference teams (plus Detroit and Chicago) on repeat.

/and sure, HNIC is great...if you actually get it.
