Funny how they are ok with the girls parading around in bikini's, and that's ok, because it meets their needs, but if one shows up that has posed nude, they are relieved of the crown. I guess it's ok for them to do it, just nobody else.

Tim Tebow's Tumble Good News for 'Miss America Pageant' ratings

Last year, the pageant drew 8 million in its final half-hour.  "With the exception of its New Year's Eve programming, ABC scored its best non-sports adult 18-49 rating in the 2-hour time period in more than a year."

I'd just like to point out that Miss New York is originally from Alabama. It's a conspiracy between her and AJ McCarron's girlfriend.

One of the finalist questions last night was about Brent Musburger's comments. But instead of calling Katherine Webb by name, they called her "A.J. McCarron's girlfriend". Shouldn't the Miss America pageant acknowledge that she has her own identity?

That's an old looking woman for 23. I would have guessed mid 40s easily.

I know everyone has their own taste in women, and they're supposedly judged on more than just looks, but in all of the USA is this really the best we have to offer?

You're looking at it the wrong way.

1. First off, there are untold thousands of more attractive women in this world who choose to do things that don't rely entirely on their looks. Which is the overwhelming majority of attractive women. Scratch them off the list completely.

2. Now, scratch off women who do non-pageant things that are directly related to their looks. Start with actresses, singers, all kinds of dancers, and other professional/amateur entertainers.

3. Then, scratch off women who are actual models (whether part-time or full-time).

4. Eliminating all those - do you know what's left to compete for Miss America? The women who came up in the pageant circuits from the time they were children. Many have been caked with makeup and spending time on the road since they were, what, 5 years old? So of course they look rough for their age.

If they can't keep finding scandals, controversies, or other ways to get them into the news, I don't see this stupidity being on television for more than a few more years. It's basically a little niche-interest item that worked its way into the public spotlight once a year.

Katie Harman (2001), but even that's only because I went to high school with her. If it weren't for that, the pageant that year wouldn't have even pinged my radar.

/We had choir and were in a few musicals together

Consider this blind speculation because it is, but Teh Pageant strikes me as one of those things that will never die because it appeals to a VERY specific demographic:  The hyperconservative rich elite.  Not to mention, how expensive is it to rent out a convention center, set up a stage and contract out an A/V crew?  I think the whole thing could probably be done for about $1 million and that's with the trimmings.

All that said, I think this would continue even if it got negative ratings.  It strikes me as the sort of show that appeals to crazy "old money" hyperconservative types who want to live in a fictional 1950s bubble.  If they have the money to fund it, it doesn't need ad revenue to survive, and thus doesn't need an audience either.  And if there's one thing I know about old money, it's that they're willing to spend their money to maintain their delusions.  If (and I admit this is a guess) they're the ones keeping Teh Pageant alive, it's an event that can continue to be on life support for a long, long time.

Heather French, Miss America 2000. She was Miss Kentucky and I was living there at the time and people went batshiat over it because she was the first Miss Kentucky to win Miss America. She was one of those 24-year-olds who looked 40 and was already engaged to Kentucky's lieutenant governor who was twice her age; their wedding, which happened once she was done being Miss America, was televised statewide. To their credit, they're still married.

I did have to look. Here's the best America and USA have managed.

NOTABLE FORMER MISS AMERICAS:
*Mary Ann Mobley, Mississippi, 1959 (recurring role on Diff'rent Strokes)
*Phyllis George, Texas, 1971 (CBS sportscaster in the 70's)
*Terry Ann Meeuwsen, Wisconsin, 1973 (co-host of The 700 Club)
*Vanessa Williams, New York, 1987
*Gretchen Carlson, Minnesota, 1989 (now on Fox and Friends)
*Debbye Turner, Missouri, 1990 (now on CBS' The Early Show)

NOTABLE FORMER MISS USA'S:
*Deborah Shelton, Virginia, 1970 (played Mandy Winger on Dallas)
*Summer Bartholomew, California, 1975 (co-host of Sale Of The Century, lost out to Vanna White in tryout to be Wheel of Fortune's letter-turner)
*Shawn Weatherly, South Carolina, 1980 (Jill Riley on Baywatch)
*Brandi Sherwood, Idaho, 1997 fill-in after previous winner abdicated by winning Miss Universe (former Price Is Right model; successfully sued the show after losing her job to pregnancy in 2009)
*Ali Landry, Louisiana, 1996 (Doritos girl from the late 90's, hosted some hidden-camera show on NBC in 2002)
*Shandi Finnessey, Missouri, 2004

NOTABLE FORMER MISS TEEN USA'S:
*Brandi Sherwood, who went on to win Miss USA
*Jack-all else

NOTABLE FORMER MISS UNIVERSES:
*Marlene Schmidt, Germany, 1961 (notable quote from Wikipedia: "None of the films achieved particular merit for plot or other production values apart from generally offering a liberal dose of female nudity")
*Gloria Diaz, Philippines, 1969 (suggested in interview after the 2010 pageant that Filipino contestants might do better by using an interpreter for the final question rather than attempting to answer in English. because people from Cebu can't speak English very well. This went over so well in Cebu that she has now officially been declared persona non grata in that city.)
*Georgina Rizk, Lebanon, 1971 (married one of the participants in the Munich massacre)
*Irene Saez, Venezuela, 1981 (ran for presidency of Venezuela in 1998, had the misfortune to be running in the same election in which Hugo Chavez decided he wanted it too)
*Cecilia Bolocco, Chile, 1987 (went into journalism; has two Chilean Emmys)
*Sushmita Sen, India, 1994 (went into Bollywood; looks to have gone over rather majorly)
*Lara Dutta, India, 2000 (ditto-- Aishwarya Rai, Miss World 1994, same story)

2013-01-13 02:20:44 PM
Oh. Forgot the note for Finnessey... she hosted a late-night call-in game show on GSN.

2013-01-13 02:39:35 PM
Anyone else catch the contestant that suggested weed is to be used for recreational purposes?

2013-01-13 02:52:32 PM
Do they not consider how stupid they will look when they make faces like that? Their entire f'in life is devoted to their appearance, then when it matters the most they blow up, with horrific close-your-mouth results.

They even suck as models.

BTW, "Potato" would be a more intelligent answer than the blather I hear in pageants.

In the Miss USAs you forgot Shanna Moakley, best known for marrying, spawning with and divorcing the ugly overly tattooed drummer from Blink-182 (I'm pretty sure she was on Baywatch too).

I tried to skip the 'married to X' entries because you yourself didn't do squat. I made an exception for Rizk because the the sheer notoriety of who she hitched up with, plus the fact that she did so after Munich.
