I could really use a pair of warm gloves this season. My dog would be stoked to hold the wheel driving down the road, and hang out the window.

That's actually really cool.  I wonder if I could get a sweater with my cats' fur made.

Just...NO!

2013-01-13 07:07:45 AM
That's just all kinds of wrong.

Sure I could make a fur coat a year from the hair we shear off our dog, but.....NO!

I got itchy just looking at that.

I seem to remember Ohio outlawing this practice some years ago.
Wonder why?

Not strange. Now show me an owner wearing dog wearing the skin of its owner! Now that would be something.

one of my cats loves to lay across my shoulders when I'm sitting at the computer and I always joke around that when she dies I'll have her made into a stole....if I can find someone willing to do it. lol

I have two German Shepherd/Great Pyrenees mix dogs who are a lovely shade of dark cream and have very silky, fluffy fur. I could probably knit a king-sized afghan with the fur I brush off of them. Just might do that one of these days.

This is them at 6 months old. They are huge now, 120 and 160 lbs.

Having 4 dogs, I'm constantly covered in their hair so I'm getting a kick...

Hair of the dog?

Now you're messing with the sumbiatch.

I've actually researched this before, as we brush about a sweater's worth of soft grey and white hair off our husky every day and it just seems like a waste. It seems to work really well for certain types of dogs, but most dog and cat hair has to be mixed with wool to be at all useful... and even then cat hair has a tendency to 'felt up' and get all gross.

I did spin a string of yarn from her hair and was pretty stoked to find it made yarn similar in texture and color to my friend's homespun angora rabbit yarn. I'm pretty sure I'm too lazy to spin enough to make a sweater though, let alone actually make the sweater.

You spelled "nauseating" wrong.

What about a lampshade made of their skin?

2013-01-13 08:46:47 AM
My dogs insist that I need wall-to-wall carpeting made from their fur.

Only OK as long as nodog is harmed in gathering the fur. Lampshade made of skin as MemeSlave suggests, 550% wrong-o!

The lady at the local yarn shop was spinning dog fur into yarn one day when I came in. She said she was doing a 50% dog hair/wool blend (that is apparently the max you can get, you can't spin just dog hair, the fibers are too short). Weird. She was getting hundreds of bucks to do this for a client.

So now dog owners really can look like their dogs.

Not weird. We have a long coat Akita and my wife got out her spinning wheel and spun up a bunch of dog wool. She made me a scarf from it that is very warm.

It can actually be 100% dog hair, if used from the right breed, and it is completely harmless to the dog as most people use hair that shed off naturally (works from dogs that have been shaved too, but some breeds should not be shaved as it can hurt their coat). I work as a dog groomer and have a client who sometimes collects the hair and turns it into yarn- she even teaches a class so other people can learn how to do it. I have a spool of it somewhere, but I don't knit, so it is essentially worthless to me. It does smell a little doggy.

I always thought that my dog's fur would make good socks.

Why, that's DISGUSTING, I say! What's next, will sheep herders start wearing clothes made out of SHEEP HAIR?!?!?

/Now I'm wondering if there's anything useful that could be made out of all the hair that gets groomed off of our malamutt...

Every time my brother brushed his dog, he saved the hair. After a few years, he made a pillow out of it.
It was half German Shepard - half St Bernard.
It looked like a blonde & white German Shepard only, but it was the BIGGEST damn German Shepard you ever saw!

The dog's name was Betty Lou Thelma Liz - Thelma for short.
His daughter has seven names.
My brother is strange.
