Warrumbungle was my favorite Mike Patton side project. Disco Volante is way ahead of its time.

I've been to Coonabarabran. It's right near two interesting things, if I recall correctly: Parkes Radio telescope (reason I went) and a very long underground river.

Some of my friends just finished putting the final touches on a new observatory in Siding Springs. The fires hit last night, so far the observatories have survived, a few structures have burnt, the temp. readings just outside one of the observatories was over 100c that is 212F where water boils. Damn that's hot.

Fingers crossed they get through it this time, unlike 10 years ago, when Mt. Stromlo burned.

Here is the blog posts with video and photos of the fire. http://amandabauer.blogspot.com/2013/01/siding-spring-observatory-fire s.html

Downright farking Emo place names are a tradition there too. A couple weeks back we drove out to 'Cape Tribulation', past 'Weary Bay', on our way to go on a day trip up 'Mount Sorrow' (right next to 'Mount Misery', in case you were wondering).

In a place where virtually everything is designed to kill you, it sort of fits.

Crank up your computer speakers and experience a music clip partly filmed in Coonabarabran- David Bowie's "Let's Dance!"

And here is the story of how the video was made:

LiberalConservative: Town names based on Aboriginal place names

... and aren't any more difficult to pronounce than native American places.

Not to mention Americans can't pronounce Kansas when you add "Ar" to the front.

At least they're pronouncable. And interesting.

The odd sounding Australian place names are Aboriginal words. It's a bit strange that the European settlers used the Aboriginal names since the Aboriginals were not even considered to be human beings until a few decades ago and are still held in contempt by a large part of the white population.

"Well, me and me mates were sitting in Fat-Arsed Sallie's, which is the biggest pub in Woomabungaoogamunga, which ain't much of a claim, mate, as it's the only pub in Woomabungaoogamunga, cracking open some tins and just starting to get into the piss when in stumbles Bluey Hennessy, moving around pretty quick for a bloke that's been half-crippled by footie in school and he looks crooker than a flock of sheep that just found out all the new hands are Kiwis..."

Well, it's no Fangboner Road (actual road in north central Ohio)....
