Yesterday six people were shot in the city of Chicago; two died - a 14 yr old boy and a 15 yr old boy in separate incidents.

But they were black, so white people don't care about the details.

I was actually there.  We left the Sports Authority as they were setting up the command post. We could overhear some of the conversations.  He had a history of abusive relationships, physical assault, threatened to kill anyone and everyone around him, any police who got between him and the girlfriend, etc.

After we left, I followed this on a scanner. They had most of the northeast division on the perimeter for at least an hour. They figured out where he was when someone at the theater told police that a man matching the description bought a ticket for the movie an hour after it started.

He was certainly a candidate for suicide by cop.  But we'll never talk about mental health care, dealing with serial abusers and keeping guns out of the hands of felons.

These Chicago murders won't be talked about until the end of the year, when they're talked about en masse. Wasn't it the guy who was just on Piers Morgan's show who pointed out that more Americans are killed by handguns than by AR15s or other semi auto guns?

Is this really an argument they are using? Of course more people are killed by handguns. Way more people can afford/obtain a handgun and it's much easier (I would think) to walk around with one without drawing attention to it immediately. It's stupid to make the comparison.

It's a valid argument either way. If you want to ban guns in order to actually reduce gun crime, then go after handguns instead of assault rifles. On the other hand, if you don't want to ban guns, subliminally suggest banning handguns because there's many more of them than assault rifles and it is much more politically unfeasible/impractical to ban them.

Okay, makes sense when you put it that way. The closest I come to following this is checking the occasional Fark thread. I don't think any reasonable person thinks we're going to ban all handguns.

While they're certainly more concealable, the "more affordable/easily obtainable" bit is not just false, it's pretty much the exact opposite of how it works. Handguns are pretty specialized for target shooting and self-defense, you have to actually go to a gun store and both the gun and the ammo tend to be relatively expensive. Rifles and shotguns are also technically usable for home defense or target shooting, but they're also hunting tools, so the ammo runs cheap, most of the weapons are cheaper than the average handgun, and you can pick them up at Wal*Mart, Academy Sports, or any of a dozen other places that aren't "gun stores" as such.

I mean, there are certainly rifles that run expensive and handguns that run cheap, but the average tends to run the other way, and the cheapest end has an even more dramatic gap.

//The AR series is sort of mid- to high-price as basic rifles go, usually, so you couple probably find some holdout-size pistols for significantly cheaper, but nothing with comparable range or capacity from a dealer of similar provenance.

I'm about as steady and even-tempered as people get, but my ex spent years calling the police and trying to convince them that I was violent/alcoholic/you-name-it because she didn't want me to have joint custody. She was never successful, but that's due in part to plain dumb luck. So I'm okay with this.

While I don't dispute the "rifles are more commonly available at general-purpose sporting goods shops", my experience with the prices has been pretty much the opposite: when I bought my Glock pistol, it cost around $550. Ruger's 1911 has an MSRP around $850. I bought an AR around the same timeframe and it was around $900 or so.

Federal American Eagle 9mm 124gr ammo costs around $14 for 50 rounds ($0.28/round) while the same brand .223 Remington 62gr ammo costs $11/20 rounds ($0.55/round). Federal American Eagle .308 Winchester 150gr costs $19.50/20 ($0.98/round).

These are all just basic full metal jacket practice ammunition: soft/hollow-point ammo for hunting or self-defense runs even more. Of course, most sporting goods shops that I've been to sell both handgun and rifle ammo, so it's essentially equally available in retail shops.

/loves shooting .22LR: easy on the wallet, easy on the shoulder, just as fun

It's less about race, and more about affiliation. If I were a betting man, I'd wager that at least 5 of those people shot were directly involved with a gang (if not all 6). Back when I used to be a TV news producer, we'd chalk that up as "bad things happen to bad people" and largely ignore the story. If an innocent person was involved, like say from a stray bullet from a drive-by, then we'd trump the story up, but 95% of the time, it's usually gang-on-gang violence, which nobody gives a shiat about.

/used to be in the Yakima, WA market

I lean more towards it is a gang thing. A lot of people take into account time and place and age of victim. 14 and 15 are old enough to get themselves involved in gangs and was it at night in a known gang area like Chicago. A coworker, I once had, lost his 19 yro white son when he was robbed and shot dead in his car. I felt bad for my fellow worker, but that faded the more it looked like a drug deal that went bad. Of course the dad couldn't explain or didn't want to admit why his son was where he was when he was shot, but his son was a "good" kid that was going to college. The family never helps because they always go all 'my kid was a good kid, who NEVER got into trouble'. Regardless killers need to go to jail, but when it appears like they shot another criminal we tend not to care. Public judging has a lot of possibilities depending on each person, but the end result still rolls the same.
