There are Mac viruses, there just aren't many because it not worth the effort.

Hipsters don't have any money so there isn't any reason to steal their credit card data.

Hackers feel that Mac users have suffered enough.

It's maxed out from paying three thousand dollars for a three hundred dollar computer.

Was there a single "fact" in the article that wasn't bullshiat?

If I was going to code a virus, why would I code something that affected 6% of the market share and not 81%? Link

I mean, unless I really hated Mac users as much at sucky blog writer hates Windows users.

Should write a virus tailored for him.  Maybe he'll have something else stupid to blog about.

So being compatible with most any off the shelf hardware is a bad thing?

Yes.  If you don't have to spend days trying to match and recode the right drivers, it's not worth having.

Because, simply put, the Mac is a legitimate computing environment, while Windows is merely a collection of haphazard code slapped together on the cheap which even the least skilled of hackers can take down in their sleep.

I've seen this website linked twice now in the past week or two, and both times the article has been obscene Apple knob-slobbing. That's some damn fine journalism there, Beetweek.

Any sufficiently well-coded computer operating system is sophisticated enough that hackers simply can't find a way in. If there are no exploits to be exploited, then hackers simply have nothing to work with.

Pretty obvious the (unnamed) author knows between zero and nothing about software engineering.

Kinda makes me wonder why everyone hasn't bought a Mac. It is SO obviously superior.

Probably for the same reason everyone didn't vote for Ron Paul.

Real answer, based on my 20 years as a computer user, and 15 years as a software developer.

Without getting into differences in how things are set up at the base security level, or how code review processes are run between the two companies. I think one of the biggest issues is old code.

1) Windows has a lot of cruft in it, there are a lot of ancient applications from decades ago that will still run in more modern versions of windows. Since windows focuses on businesses, they're inclined to maintain support for old systems.

Old code means old bugs and holes to squash out. Even worse, some programmers made use of these holes to make their apps work (so fixing the hole means that legitimate apps won't work anymore).

2) On the apple side, they went through a few complete architecture changes, and they tend to not support really old stuff. (sorry, you can't run your crappy Power PC targeted app on the Intel CPUs we use now).

Philbb: No Mac viruses you say?

Define the word "viruses" says I.

I service Macs on the side, and it has never stopped making me laugh when I'm working on someone's computer and point out they have no anti-virus. Invariably they say "What? I'm using a Mac! I don't need an anti-virus!" Of course, the times when someone said that as I was finding Flashback infestations left right and backwards made me want to rage.

Still, I have to say after using/servicing Macs for more than 30 years and PCs (jumped ship with Mac OS 7.5 "The Error of Type 11 Has Just Occurred, Please Kiss All The shiat You've Been Working On Goodbye And Restart Your Computer") since Win95 and later Linux, I do have to give them credit. For all the god awful high prices and annoying bullshiat (ditching floppy drives while pretty much everything was still on floppies, NuBUS, AppleTalk, 64 pin SIMMS, dropping CD/DVD drives, etc etc ad nauseum), by and large I have the fewest issues with Macs.

Mac fanbois and hipsters? Yes. Macs, not as much.

2013-01-12 10:41:48 PM
Yeah, there are no Apple viruses. Except Flashback. And SMSSend. And Mac Defender.

Oh. Damn.

Yeah, Windows has a lot more, but as plenty of others have pointed out, that's mostly a function of MacOS having a 6% market share to Windows' 81%.

This.

/I spend a good amount of time fixing PCs, and an occasional Mac. I have seen viruses on Mac, and have had the exact same reaction from Mac users when it comes to why they don't have AV.
I like both platforms.

Why wouldnt you rob the homeless guy begging for change??

Plus, given that so many rootkits/hacker sites/packages/what not currently exist and are free for MS, why would you waste the effort??

Use Macs for work, I would consider a linux distro if it came close to what I'm used to in OSX. That said, the article was complete bullshiat. I had to make sure it wasn't a parody site.

yes the article was bovine scatology.
Yes, flasback, yes mac defender and whatever else.

But I have serious non-troll-ey question: is there mac malware that affects the system and not just the single user AND does not prompt you to enter a user/password?

It's on a higher level of knowledge than most of the anti-Apple articles that they insta-green around here. Which isn't saying much, I admit.

Actually, I can get 1 card to work, but not my newer one.  I'm sure it's a simple fix, like editing the blacklist file (had to do that on a previous card), but I just haven't had the time/desire to do so.

Does Apple have the majority of its coding done in India, selecting devs by lowest possible resource cost?

If not, that's probably part of it.
