Sometimes in the blue room
another dream fades away
velvet as the moon
she lays down and resting stays
So she's seeing
the shadow of life
falls over the bright light
and so on
she's breathing the air
surrounding celestial stairs

There are sidewalks in Boston with signs warning "no parking -- empty space below" (or similar words). I have yet to see one warning "no fatties -- empty space below."

Okay, I'm not a huge flubbo but the quarter inch thing sidewalk thing is going to turn me into a paranoid wreck.

I already have a hard enough time walking over the grates and stuff, I'm going to have to work on my hovering.

Allow me to join your Paranoid Club, sometimes the thin ones kind of buckle when I walk over them and I have the vision of tumbling into the bodega's beer cellar.

Even at 300 or 400 pounds, the sidewalk should not break like that.

So are the sidewalks in NY all that thin?

Is that poor planning or what?

THESE.

Two 150 pound people would have ended up in the same predicament. Would it be unreasonable to expect two people of "normal" weight to be able to stand on a sidewalk?

New hotness - Danger of our sidewalks collapsing from the weight of our citizens.

Honey? Water, fish, rice, walk a lot. NYC? Start using, oh, I dunno, actual supportive materials for sidewalks over old freight elevator holes.

Fire Chief Thomas Jemmott said the woman had to be pulled up in "high-angle rescue unit" resembling a crane with cargo netting.

Let's not stop there with the humiliation.

Was there a loud beeping noise coming from the heavy equipment as it hoisted her towards daylight?

Was she right side up when she emerged?

Did she have a death grip on the last thing she was eating before falling through or did she finish it off while in the hole awaiting rescue?

I bet she sues the city and they have to cough up a ton of money.

I saw a video a while back from some guy who was urban exploring around the unused subway tunnels and beneath bridges and roads and such, and there was some pretty ridiculous stuff to be seen. The structure beneath the roads was not only spacious, but much of it was just plain rotted. There's major buildings and roads being supported by what appears to be practically nothing, like it's all a house of cards.

Found it. Check 15:30 into the video and you'll see what roads get built on top of.

That's just one example, there's plenty more out there, but it gives a pretty good show about what kind of stuff is actually underneath the city.

So she was adjacent to the basement of a place that sells ribs? I imagine she could smell the savoury aroma wafting down from the kitchen.

I don't understand why she just didn't do a Kool-Aid Man through the wall into the basement proper and lumber up the stairs.

And then there's motorized wheelchairs, which are 400, 500 pounds each+ the weight of a person. Imagine a handicapped person and their chair went through the sidewalk. That would have been a disaster.

All streets, buildings and accessways should be made ready to acommodate them!

Did she make a vaguely cow-like grunting noise as she was hoisted up?

Were there numerous sewer rats stuck in her flabby behind?

No, they wouldn't.  Your physics is bad and you should feel bad.

Two 150-pound people would've had their weight distributed over a surface area twice as large, and less likely to be concentrated at a single structural weakness.  Not to mention, the "last straw" probably wasn't her standing, but walking to where she stood, which put more than her entire body weight (in terms of force) onto an area the size of her heel.  It's the pressure equivalent of a bodybuilder striking the block with a sledgehammer.

The sidewalk still shouldn't break like that, of course.  But no, one major reason why it broke was because it was exposed to an enormous amount of force in a small area, which happens only when someone is disgustingly fat.

Relax, this is just natural selection in action. An unfit person (the fat cow in question) is removed from the gene pool because they aren't adapted to the high caloric density of modern life.

This happens often as they just cement up to building to make it look clean even when it's a void space underneath. Why they don't take the extra step to put up a railing I don't know.

Them trying to blame this on the woman for being a big fatty is not fair as it could have been three 100 pound teens standing there, same weight.

They're called "areaways" usually, and exist in most major cities.  I got to inspect evey single one for the Central Corridor light rail project in the Twin Cities.

The basements simply extend beyond the building's exterior wall.  Many times, the structural steel that is part of the basement ceiling (sidewalk sub-structure) rusts and loses integrity.

Pretty neat, actually.  Got to visit the First National Bank areaway in DT. St. Paul...part of the areaway was a shooting range that was used by the bank to train officers during the gangster era, as well as ginormous safes.

Most are usually less sexy, simply used for old coal delivery chutes and such.

Except the weight of the three teens would have been spread out more, unless they were standing on each others feet while hugging.

Oh, and three normal sized people wouldn't have needed specialized machinery to lift them out.
