It's a tasting menu...not so much choices as courses.

I've been to a few of those places and some are worth it especially for the entire experience. Yes, they are expensive but you have to consider the meal a combination of dinner and the evenings entertainment. A decent dinner and a Broadway show you're looking at over $150 a person, which is about what these meals cost (there are a few exceptions that are more).

Per Se is definitely worth it once, the food is great and the service is insanely good.
Le Bernardin is fantastic for fish, though I didn't have the tasting menu.
Torissi is a lot of fun, tasting was really good and some very inventive dishes.
Jean-Georges (non-tasting menu) was not very good at all, totally not worth it.
Gramercy Tavern regular menu was meh
Del Posto used to be fantastic for lunch, 3 course menu for $29. Prices have gone up $10 so I don't know if it's worth it anymore.

This was over the course of 4 years and only a couple were the full blown tasting menu. I generally cook and eat at home which saves a ton of money so I can try the food I'm not able to cook. Definitely want to try Brooklyn Fare at some point though it's insane trying to get a table, also Battersby though just for the regular menu.

Seriously. Don't want a tasting, don't order a tasting.

/wife is going to Alinea in Chicago at the end of the month. 18 courses. $225. She's geeked out of her mind.

i didn't know nyc restaurants called buffets tasting menus. what do the nyc chefs call the time at 3:30 pm when the daytime tasting menu changes to the more expensive nighttime tasting menu like at the local ryan's and golden corral?

Alinea was awesome. My wife and I went for our last anniversary, and because we happened to be in Chicago for the first time.

Wife and I fell in love with the Purple Pig when were in town. If there is extra time on your schedule, its worth a stop.

I'm not sure you've quite grasped how this works.

If I'm paying $150+ per person, it better farking well be a 2+ hour meal experience.
