I didn't know Strikefarce was going away. I had no idea how much it depended on "Rape Face" Rhonda to keep it afloat. King Mo's susupension should be expireing soon I thought they would try and give him a big push.

For the record the UFC took all the decent fighters away years ago and mostly they turned out to be not so good. For the last few years it has been the opposite : a dumping ground for the UFC washouts.

Good to be back on Fark for this one.  I was in the house for Dos Santos vs. Velasquez.  Crazy event, so many Brazilians and Mexicans competing to be the loudest.

Gonna miss Strikeforce though.  Always thought they put on great, free events.

Tonight is a night of extremely lopsided fights. Almost every fight in fact, but it should still be fun. I do think Jacare vs. Herman is actually a pretty close matchup, though if Jacare wins by sub I won't be surprised.

By the way, Showtime is having a free trial weekend, and several cable and satellite providers are participating, so even if Showtime isn't on your plan, check it out. You may be able to see the prelims on Showtime Extreme and the main card on Showtime without streaming tonight.

Beltran's statement afterward was funny. It was something that is probably not technically a lie, like: "All I can say is I did not inject myself with steroids." Ok, so it was administered orally? Someone else shot you up? It was HGH, not steroids?

Yeah. Never been a huge Beltran fan, don't dislike him either, just indifferent.

I really, really wanted Paul Harris to do well in the UFC because I like him and respect his history, but he just doesn't have the required fight IQ and will to make it in the octagon.

His world is ADCC. Sucks about the roids.

Interesting that they were popped for Deca: it's a pretty weak androgen and has terrible side effects. It's generally added to test-heavy cycles for it's pain relieving and anti-inflammatory effects. I think that some of these guys don't really plan/have access to good cycles, they just use whatever they can get their hands on.

The drugs they're choosing are ridiculous from a PED.

Did you hear the guy from ShowSports or whatever's interview with Ariel Helwani this week? It sounds like it may very well happen.

Regarding Noons and Couture, I have a theory that blood--even from illegal or incidental contact--has a very real subliminal effect on specators/judges. I think that may have played a role here. One of the many things that's wrong with the idea of putting too much stock into what the fighters look like afterward. I think it even happens when--for whatever reason--the guy who landed a strike that draws blood gets more blood on him than the guy who is actually cut.

2013-01-12 10:17:40 PM
I think this one could go either way.

My guess is the short notice fill in by Herman. They probably cut him some slack on weight.

Man, these refs aren't warning about grabbing the cages, didn't call the illegal knee and just now didn't step in for the up-kick until the fighter complained.

Do they even know the rules?

Yeah. The first four days of this one was spent alternately sweating and shivering, sleeping for three hours, awake for two, sleep 3, up 2, etc.

Don't feel too bad now, but this hacking cough just won't let go.

With Strikeforce dissolving, have the bigger names already negotiated with UFC, or are they technically free agents after tonight? I've been a bit preoccupied the last month or so, so I'm a little out of the loop.

Oh, and get your flu shots. My father nearly died of swine flu a few years back. It's no f'ing joke, and the swing flu vax is in the flu shot now.

Whatever contracts existed were part of the purchase. Any renegotiations are "voluntary."

Watching three sporting events, must've missed the part about the swine flu. Regarding the contracts, who knows what they look like. SF was really top-heavy with talent, but even more so with their contracts. I'm sure if Zuffa doesn't want guys around, they can afford to pay them to go away.

2013-01-12 11:17:59 PM
What I mean is that if you look at fighters' compensation, the lower level fighters don't get paid much. What I don't know is what the contracts look like as far as being guaranteed fights, or guaranteed money IF they fight, or what the remedy is if they aren't given fights. I'd expect that if someone has two fights left on their contract at $10k per, Zuffa could either keep them hanging on until they ask out to go fight somewhere else, or buy them out for $20k or a smaller/negotiated amount.

2013-01-12 11:18:07 PM

Agreed. This fight showed me nothing. But... I think he will beat Mir. Mir struggles with top quality wrestlers. I see Cormier pulling an ugly 3 round decision over Mir. Maybe Mir sneaks in a sub on a guy who hasn't faced a high end HW with subs, but I have a feeling if it goes past 2 minutes of round 2, Mir is gassed and gets laid on...

Lots of prior UFC fighters have fought in Strikeforce. Just in the past year there have been Nate Marquart, Keith Jardine, Robbie Lawler, Pat Healy, Josh Barnett, Josh Thomson, Mike Kyle, Paul Daley, Ed Herman and others. Five of them fought tonight.

By the way, two of the five "Strikeforce to UFC" fighters you mentioned fought in the UFC before moving to Strikeforce and then back to the UFC.

I hope so. The only problem is that Invicta can't do too many cards a year, so Showtime would probably need another promotion as well, kind of like AXS carries cards from multiple promotions.

Right. Daley wasn't given the boot for trying a sucker punch after the bell, Marquart and Barnett were not shown the door after testing positive, Pat Healy didn't have that single UFC fight (a loss), and Jeorge Gurgel wasn't cut from the UFC after going 3-4. I don't know if Mike Kyle was cut or if he left the UFC of his own accord, but I sort of doubt Dana was begging him to stay after going 2-1 and biting one opponent on the chest and throwing multiple knees to the nuts of another.

As far as Ed Herman, it's true, he wasn't cut from the UFC and was doing Zuffa a favor by fighting tonight.

So, of the six prior UFC fighters on tonight's card, that's five washouts and one on loan.

I have split feelings on Mauro. I like him because he obviously loves the sport and has genuine enthusiasm for his work. However, his voice kind of grates on me; he doesn't vary his announcer guy voice at all, and it sounds like he's throwing up when he talks.

Askren, well, he's a specialist. He better hope Bellator stays in business, because he's (at best) a top 10 gatekeeper in the UFC.

I also liked it when I found Bellator on MTV2. Askren is the shiat.

I like Mauro. I prefer the Goldberg-Rogan team, but Mauro is OK.

I also like(d) Mayhem. He was lots of fun for a while. It's kind of sad how his career ended and the problems he's had since retiring, but I hope he pulls things together. Rousey is doing a lot to help MMA grow and is a good choice for first female to sign with the UFC.

What was the answer to that? I was away.

Both his parents are hospitalized.

I like Mauro. He's one of the reasons I started watching MMA, along with Jason Miller, and Rousey. I guess I'm not a purist.

I love Goldberg and Rogan, I just wish that Mike would stop being as sound-bitey as he is. He seems to be a little too aware of how his call will be used in future video packages. It also seems like he has a planned narrative that he tries to shoehorn the action into, whether it fits or not. When you hear Joe correcting him, that's usually why. He's at his best when he just drops all that and just makes it up as he goes.

I agree that Goldberg can be too scripted at times, but despite that he does a good job. I've also been of the opinion that at least some of his mistakes and apparent lack of knowledge is intentional. My theory is that sometimes he asks questions or makes simplistic statements on purpose to give Joe a cue to explain something. Sort of a service for those relatively new to MMA.
