I don't know about 'weird', but I'm pretty sure I went into puberty somewhere in the last 20 minutes of the movie.

I was gonna say...

I was about 14 when it came out, and the egg opening up scene didn't make me think about sex at all (which was weird since I was 14 and nearly everything else did).  But Sigourney wandering around in her skivvies?  Yea, that gave me all sorts of ideas, none of which was "disturbing" or "non-specific" in the least.

...and you wanted your slobbery Alien inside her.

Yeah, well the Alien life cycle was supposed to be an embodiment of the fear of rape.

Wait, Gieger's art is full of sexual overtones?  When did this happen?

I thought they were talking about Parker's "I'd rather be eating something else, but right now I ain't thinkin' 'bout food."

Also something interesting when I listened to the commentary. Ash's attempt to shove a rolled up magazine into Ripley's mouth was supposed to represent Ash's desire to perform a sexual act he wasn't capable of.

Also, the adult alien may or may not have raped Lambert to death.

fusillade762: Sybarite: Yeah, well the Alien life cycle was supposed to be an embodiment of the fear of rape.

Yup. No accident there.

Critics have also analyzed Alien's sexual overtones. Adrian Mackinder compares the facehugger's attack on Kane to a male rape and the chestburster scene to a form of violent birth, noting that the Alien's phallic head and method of killing the crew members add to the sexual imagery.[65] Dan O'Bannon has argued that the scene is a metaphor for the male fear of penetration, and that the "oral invasion" of Kane by the facehugger functions as "payback" for the many horror films in which sexually vulnerable women are attacked by male monsters

Came here to say this. The entire movie is based on interspecies man-rape.

"One thing that people are all disturbed about is sex... I said 'That's how I'm going to attack the audience; I'm going to attack them sexually. And I'm not going to go after the women in the audience, I'm going to attack the men. I am going to put in every image I can think of to make the men in the audience cross their legs. Homosexual oral rape, birth. The thing lays its eggs down your throat, the whole number.'"

And the entrance portals to the Space Jockey craft were shaped like vaginas.
And the Space Jockey console was a giant penis.
And the mouth of the alien egg represented a vagina.
And the facehugger "mouth" was a combination penis/vagina.
And Brett was killed chasing pussy.

There wasn't a whole lot of subtlety to that movie.

Yes, it stuck its tail up her hoo-hah. This scene was actually filmed but the censors said no way so instead what you get is its tail suggestively going between her legs and a cut-away to her screams.

Yes. Alien is full of aggressive sexual imagery. The underside of the facehugger even looks like a vagina with a proboscis sticking out (a better shot is the one in the vat in Aliens that tries to "fark" Burke).

That's Giger for ya. That's his thing -- phalluses coming out of orifices and other such things.

There's even a deleted scene in which it's revealed that Brett and Dallas weren't actually killed. Instead they were taken off to a shower-like part of the ship where they were slowly being turned into giant scrotum-like eggs to complete the cycle:

As it is the BBFC is far more transparant on why it gives its ratings than say the MPAA. For recent releases it gives out the reasons why a film has been given a rating (for example The Hunger Games and why it was cgi'd to get a 12 certificate)

Yeah, that scene sorta farks with Cameron's sequel. In Aliens the xeno biology requires a queen. Though if a single drone xeno can create more eggs it certainly better explains Ripley's outburst at the board meeting. "If just ONE of those things gets down here..." doesn't make a lot of sense if a queen is required for breeding.

I never understood that conversation. Are Arcturians aliens? I thought the xeno's were the only known (living) alien species in the Alien universe?

Hudson's "bug hunt" comment and the board room conversation suggests that isn't the case.  I gather humanity just hasn't found anything that can fight back.

Good point. I guess I was thinking of intelligent, humanoid aliens. Though I guess just because you can fark it doesn't necessarily make it either of those things.

Cameron didn't know about that scene and wrote a whole new mythos/lifecycle for the xemomorph that made it more like an insect colony, which is familiar to us and not that scary. I actually like the original idea -- it's definitely weirder and more alien that this thing actually turns its hosts into eggs. Nothing on Earth does that so it's a good twist. It also means all those eggs in the derelict were in fact the ship's crew.

Let's pretend Prometheus never happened.

fusillade762: I never understood that conversation. Are Arcturians aliens? I thought the xeno's were the only known (living) alien species in the Alien universe?

They're colonists. Freaky transexual colonists or something. From the snippets of conversations, the marines have apparently encountered lots of indigenous life on the worlds they've colonized but all have been nothing more than nuisances ("bug hunts"). The xenomorph species was the first serious foe.

One unwritten rule about the Alien franchise is that no interstellar extraterrestrial species have been contacted yet. But there's always lots of evidence that they're around.
