Charlie Watts and Ringo are both proof that what most bands need is a competent timekeeper who can keep the beat going, and that not every drummer needs to be a Neil Peart wankster.

Never understood why he couldn't hit the snare and the hi-hat at the same time.

Not a fan of his... not a detractor... but he always looked like he was one miss hit from a complete trainwreck the way he "air times" with his hands. Reminds me of Rain Man.

I love his work on "Get of Of My Cloud" in particular, that simple rat a tat a tat tat fill is so awesome.

There are lots of good drummers, but there is only one Mickey Hart.

I like how he always looks stonefaced and like he'd rather be ANYWHERE else.  He's definately the Buster Keaton of drumming.

Yea but Neil's more fun to air drum along with.

Charlie is great. The perfect feel for every song. The stomp of "Brown Sugar" with the toms is a thing of beauty.

Thought the headlne was surely referring to John Bonham.

Scot Halpin? (not the greatest, but a good pinch hitter...)

John Densmore?

Allegedly in it for the paycheck in the early days. Apparently not cheap to hire. He played with Ron Woods' brother before Charlie joined the Stones.

Coolest thing I heard about him was Mick moaning one night 'Where's my drummah?' in a hotel. Charlie in leather jacket, knocked on Mick's door, Mick answered and Charlie clocked him in the face. 'Im not anyone's drummer'. Adjusted his jacket and went back to his room.

As long as we're playing this game,  it's three years early, and he's moved on, but here's a little Mitch Mitchell love.

That article had nothing to do with Neal Peart.

Even cooler: Watts got out of bed, shaved, put on a suit and freshly shined shoes, decked Jagger and said, "Don't ever call me your drummer again. You're my farking singer."

Stone cold.

The weirdo dumb fark at my work would say there is no drummer that ever was or will be better than.. ah crap... the dead crazy guy that drove his car in a pool and blew up a hotel toilet with Dynamite...brb

google says:..the who's keith moon.

now, i'm not a fan of that kind of music, so i couldn't tell you one way or the other, just throwin' it out there is all.

Charlie is amazing. Most folks forget (or don't know) that he's a jazzer at heart, and even led a group on a Charlie Parker tribute record. He & Keef are the heart of the Stones. There's a reason why they went on past Wyman bailing out and Brenda's (er, Mick's) dubious solo records. Hell, the title of Exile On Main Street (one of the greatest rock & blues records ever) should've been called When Charlie Comes In. Cuz that's the when the action -really- starts.

Defnitely, Charlie won't be cooler than Keith until he's just below room temperature.
/Keith will still be the better drummer though.

Slu: Charlie seems like a guy that doesn't appreciate how great his gig is.

He's quit the band after every tour for the last fourty some odd years.

He is just a great rock n roller that hates everything a out being a rock star. He shunned groupies choosing to be faithful to his wife who he's been married to for over 40 years. While Keith and Mick wear their flamboyant rock star uniforms on stage, Charlie wear jeans and plain shirt.

I was going to say that Watts always seemed like a jazz drummer in a rock band.

Then I RTFA - Watts has become one of the most legendary drummers in rock music history, but ironically, his background was primarily in jazz

I like Rush and all, but Mike Portnoy would run circles around Neil. Also, Dream Theater is a goddamn legend.

Meh, that's what the Bass Player is for. OOHH! BURN!

i could always crack up bandmates by doing my impression of charlie...stonefaced, staring off into all directions except at them or forward...hi-hat/ride cymbal stick up while other stick hits the snare...

I 've seen them 3 times.1999,2000 and 2003.And when Jagger introduces the band,Charlie by far
gets the loudest response from the crowd.

/Saw the Stones tour bus in the fast lane going 50 mpg.Right blinker on.

I think my favorite drummer is Grant Hart. He always played like ..Grant Hart. When Husker Du did hardcore he didn't cheat, didn't do 'oompa' beats, he played really really fast rock and roll drums. One thing that always amazes me is his mad improv skills on this: http://youtu.be/amUYpAwedLs.

I'll admit that I'm not the biggest fan of the earlier stuff. And I admit I'm not the biggest fan of the vocalist (though he's gotten better about toning down his "hair band" roots).

But after Jordan joined the band, they put out epic albums one after another.

The Dance of Eternity
The Glass Prison
The Test That Stumped Them All

And if you don't like any of that stuff, then you're... well, you're just trolling at this point. There really is no other explanation.
