It was unclear whether [Trudy] Miller has an attorney.

She does. The attorney's name is ... um ... Judy Diller.

"I can barely contain my fury."  That's kind of catchy.

Well looks like it's time to customize my weightlifting onesie with iron-on letters.  Of course it will still say "Juicy" on the buttocks but I've pledged to butch it up a bit in 2013.

I have said it before and will say it again, anyone knowingly falsely accusing someone of a crime, especially of a sexual nature, should be forced to do the punishment for that crime themselves.

And I've said it before and I'll say it again, focusing merely on retribution as the justification for punishment is naive and ignores most of the primary justifications in a civilized society. Or, in other words, an "eye for an eye" works great for a bunch of half-blind Babylonians, but it's not so appropriate these days.

In this case, it's pretty much the same. California's stalking laws straddle the border between felony and misdemeanor, and she's being brought up on "felony false swearing," which will probably be knocked down to "misdemeanor wasting our goddamn time."

As the step-son of a falsely accused teacher, friend of a person whose career ended before it had begun, and as the victim of false accusations myself, I approve of these posts.

Crying wolf is one of the worst things to do to an honest person. Especially if you replace wolf with rapist, paedophile, molester, wifebeater, etc. Especially if the one being decried is male, and the crier female.

Once that shiat hits the fan, the stains on your life often require a change of name, town, and sometimes (as my friend did), country.

It makes one think "Oh, so I'm going to go down for this? I might as well do to her everything she's accusing me of, so she at least gets what being beaten, raped and tortured is all about. Might think twice about repeating this shiat with some other poor innocent dude"

When the cops bash your door in, 3 of them leading wrestling you away, hands cuffed behind you, in your shorts, face bleeding (because you jumped out your skin as to why 3 armed dudes busted your door in and are wrestling you
to the ground at 4am), the neighbours start talking. To the press. And nobody gives a fark when the truth comes out. There's no front page apology from the scum paper that blasted you as a woman-hating cdrug-crazed terror. Your neighbours are only interested in gossip when there's newspaper reports of a woman being forced to pray for her eternal soul because the mad druggie had a gun. (the cops found 2 grams of weed, and a gun-shaped lighter, that belonged to her)

This can be applied to the lives that are ruined by vindictive and/or crazy malicious people; unfortunately the people that do these things are usually female. I've never understood what some people get out of jumping on the gossip and drama train. When sh*t goes down, no one cares about the truth. It is surreal.

It's true, that graph is bullshiat... Specifically, it implies one rape per rapist, when we know that it's on average 6 victims. Second, it overestimates the number of unreported rapes. But most importantly and relevant to this discussion, it overestimates the number of false accusations, by combining within that category accusations against a specific person and false reports that describe an unknown perpetrator. And that's an error, because the majority of false rape claims are false reports, not false accusations - so much so, that a report of rape that doesn't name a known perpetrator is automatically more suspect.

So, it's bullshiat, but not for any reason you'd be implying.

As you know, whenever we engage in conversation, you invariably run to the modmins and try to have me banned.

So I am going to not do that today, because you are intellectually dishonest and cannot be trusted.

I will point out the Marcotte piece is deranged as most of her pieces are, and point you to a criminal defense lawyer's take on the graphic. That criminal defense lawyer points to other pieces that also debunk the material, if you are actually interested in learning (and we know you are not.)

And some dude that calls himself "GLPiggy" also has some quite good analyses of why the graphic lies, how to redraw it, and how the Washington Post reporter/blogger, Dylan Matthews, has gotten his facts wrong before.

AbbeySomeone: It is surreal.

Oh, 100% for sure. I'm a really honest, hardworking dude. To have had such doubt cast on my integrity, seeing others asked to be moved to another department in my job, having no love life without someone whispering something evil in their ear... yeah quite surreal, but you know what topped the lot? Finding out that my grandmother(bless her cotton, creationist socks), on hearing the gossip, took it upon herself to gather a mass prayer for my, wicked, wifebeating, terrorist soul while I was in custody. That was surreal.

After my ex got caught in her own web of lies, I was expecting some sort of condolences from, well, anyone. Nobody mentioned the whole thing to me ever again. Not one word has been issued to me by any of the criers in any respect to my not having done anything to the girl. I now live in another country, have taken my mother's maiden name, changed my first name and changed careers. I also found love four years ago, but decided to tell her everything from the outset, and I've only just started to make new friends this past two years.

I really, really hope you've pulled through your stalker stuff. If you haven't, then my thoughts and heart are genuinely reaching out to you. I'd like to say "it gets better", but sometimes it just doesn't.

actually that'd be under estimates. I had at this chart a couple of days ago and while I'm sure it's creator's heart was in the right place,  she f'd every category.  on her website she actually says 2% false reporting rate so she's off by a factor of ten: (she's updated since the slate article with a bit more detail...)
"Source:  http://www.ndaa.org/pdf/the_voice_vol_3_no_1_2009.pdf page 2: "when more methodologically rigorous research has been conducted, estimates for the percentage of false reports begin to converge around 2-8%. "
So she just takes the lowest number... and instead of out of the thousand little rape - men it's only out of the 10% (that she also pulled out of her ass) that are reported.  But they don't get taken out of that hundred, they are off in a corner.

So with give or take 40% reported (the consensus number everyone seem to settle on) rather than 10%  and a more neutral 5% false  all of a sudden she's off by a factor of 10.

Go back and read what I wrote. The point is that she's lumped false accusations and false reports together in the same group, but that drastically overestimates the rate of false accusations. Your data about the number of false reports is the same flaw the poster creator was making.
