I'm just being honest with you. I can barely contain it. I'm so frustrated by this tyranny, you have no idea. Because a nutball walked into a school and murdered two dozen people using a rifle with a pointlessly large magazine that has no practical civilian application, this was not a completely unique situation, and we're talking about farking violent video games again because one side of the discussion is made up of pointless, selfish, evil juveniles who are afwaid the big bad bwown man gonna take awwwwww their toys away. You people just don't understand. The purpose of the 2nd amendment is to ensure the citizenry have the power to overthrow a tyrannical government. Which is why I hope conservative pundits like Mr. Levin and 2nd amendment lobbing organizations like the NRA will join my crusade to end the prohibition on citizens owning heavy arms like anti-tank missiles and SAMs. After all unless the populace has access to any and all military grade weaponry the true purpose of the 2nd amendment remains unfulfilled. It says the right to bear arms, not the right to bear only small arms.

You know I'm not really that old, just shy of 30. But I never thought in my life that democrats would actually be the party of consistency. And by no means are democrats in lockstep on various issues. But at least most individuals on the left in this country base their views on the facts and the context of an event. Those views don't change based which way the wind is blowing. On the right it seems like positions are based more on what the proposition of the other side is and how can we differentiate our selves from it.

Republicans are basically contrarians whenever the other side is in power. The specific issue does not really matter anymore. Things they vehemently supported just a few years ago are now terrible godless socialist ideas.

Now, why would we need a national gun database? Well, listen, we need to know who has the weapons, at all times, and how many weapons they have and what weapons they have. How come? Why? The guy that killed all those people in Newtown, Connecticut, we know who he was and we know who had the weapons, his mother. So what does this national database have to do with anything? Nothing.

Maybe if there'd been a database that listed that she owned these guns, a red flag would have come up when her son tried to buy firearms (and failed), and someone would have approached her and said, Hey, we know you're having serious problems with your son. Maybe you should remove all those guns from your house and keep them in a locker somewhere, or give them to someone to hold for you, just in case. And maybe, just maybe, if someone had spoken to her, she would have realized that it was stupid of her to keep guns like that in the same place with a person that she was afraid of.

It probably wouldn't happen like that, but what's wrong with a system of knowing who owns the guns? Do guns owners have something to hide? If you're not doing anything wrong......

We have backyard pools here, but we have laws that state that they need to be enclosed so that children don't accidently fall into them and drown.

We have cars, but we have laws about how fast you can go and how you can drive them (and not drinking while driving) so that people are not needlessly killed.

Whilst doubtlessly a gun ban is the most effective way to reduce gun violence, what is being discussed is merely regulation, like the above examples, in order to reduce gun violence.

This is sensible. Your inability to see this makes you a moron. Good luck with that, and in life in general.

More appropriately - what high crime or misdemeanor did he commit?

There's a reason we have courts. There's a reason people have the right to ask the government for a redress of grievances. The constitution itself gives an appropriate way for disagreements as to the scope of government power and constitutional rights to be handled without needing to yell "OMG IMPEACH!"

No one rioted when GHW Bush used executive authority to ban a whole pile of firearms. Why care now? No one rioted when Reagan banned open carry in CA to keep black people from walking around with guns, why care now?

If these types are going to be all worked up over gun rights, they should be consistent.

To be fair, there already is a federal list (and has been for years) of people who have been adjudicated "mentally incompetent" (where that's defined as "danger to self or others" or "unable to manage one's own affairs") and this list is used by the National Instant Check System (NICS) to see if a sale should be denied when they attempt to purchase a firearm.

Of course, one can only be added to the list after due process, so I don't really have a problem with it, just like I don't have any problem with people being convicted of felonies or violent misdemeanors being added to a different list queried by NICS.

I understand the desire to restrict people who are potentially violent (whether mentally ill or not) from being able to acquire firearms, but having a database of everyone who has mental health issues is overreaching and infringes on their rights.

This sort of free association is one of the few things I love about the modern conservative movement. If there's something liberals like, they can link it to Hitler in 3 steps or less.
