As long as he's just the o-coordinator, it probably wouldn't be a bad thing. He's good at that job.
Its the head coaching thing he sucks at.

I am so sorry, Browns fans. :-(

Yeah, I think he'd be decent as an OC.  Cleveland's clearly set out to hire coaching this offseason.

Now if someone could just figure out what the fark is wrong with Bud Adams and why he's firing our good coaches (ST, Linebackers) and not our DC, I'd be much happier.  We had 3 ST touchdowns this year, more than anyone else in the league, were 2nd in average punt returns and 15th in kickoffs.  Clearly, our STC needed fired.

if he has the same level of talent available, especially across the offensive line, as in Dallas then I'm sure he will once again be a great OC

Someone has forgotten that Turner was the Cowboy's OC when they were actually a good team in the early 90's.

Hiring an experienced head coach to serve as OC under a former OC, now rookie head coach is begging for second guessing. They might as well sign Tebow, too.

Sorry, but Norv will get his knife in Chud's back and be heach coach by 2015.

Which is why people keep trying to make Norv a head coach. He's a good enough coordinator that people look at that success and go "Hey, maybe THIS TIME he'll be a good head coach!"

2013-01-12 10:58:33 AM
Norv isn't a bad head coach, he's not great but he's ok. Before San Diego he was HC for Al Davis and Dan Snyder. He was okay with the Chargers but a ton of talent was lost off that team that was never replaced.

He's not the OC, he's the "Future Head Coach". Hiring Norv as OC is basically giving management an excuse to fire you. The new guy won't last 2 years if he doesn't make the playoffs

They should hire a few more OC to be on the staff. Sparano is available I heard. You can never have too many coaches trying to run the offense.

Meanwhile, ours allowed 4 ST touchdowns in a 2 game period and our returner knelt down at the 4 yard line, and our ST Coordinator gets to keep his job.

If 'ok' is code for massive underachievement with a team that should have been consistently winning 8-10 games every year then sure; he was ok.

"Should have"

been winning 8-10 games per year? Did they not do that? This year's 7-9 record was Norv's worst year.

For those of you who keep bringing up Dallas:

Yes, he was a decent OC. But remember the man who built that dynasty was Vikings GM Mike Lynn.

Then whatever you do, don't go to cleveland.com and read any comments. Everyone there is close to committing suicide.

Looks like they are also about to switch to 3-4 defense and drop Jauron. Great move, since they have been acquiring talented DTs for the last few years after switching back from 3-4. And also have no LBs besides Jackson...

Factory of Sadness shall continue!

I don't know, it seems like CavalierEternal is the type of overly optimistic Cleveland sports fan that always thinks the Browns are on the cusp of getting to the playoffs. If he was defending the Chud hire a few days ago, I'm sure he can defend this.

Yeah I don't see why some people can't seem to separate the coordinator positions with the head coach. Norv was a good OC with Dallas. One could argue that just about anyone could have been with the tools he had to work with but he did help them get some rings. He just sucks as a HC.

Was sorry to see him leave SD.

From the CHUD hire thread yesterday:

CavalierEternal: I like the hire. A few years ago, he almost landed the HC job in Baltimore until he decided to re-sign as Cleveland's OC. If Norv (NORV!) comes in as OC like they're reporting, we should at least have a watchable offense this season.

Sounds like he's okay with this.

Pretty sure June Jones as OC of that team would have 2 Super Bowl rings.

I'm torn. My first instinct is to sob and cry at the mention of the name "Derek Anderson", but as I sat and thought about it, he's a better backup than Colt McCoy for a deeper, more aggressive passing game. Well, maybe not better, but one who fits the system more. So I don't know. I just hope they can get something for Colt. He didn't get a fair shake in Cleveland (like many other young QBs). I hope he gets a chance to prove he either deserved better or deserved to be dicked around.

From what I hear, he's one of those guys who's a good coordinator, not-so-good head coach.  Several Steelers fans I know really wanted him last year when Pittsburgh let Arians go, and they're going to be pissed about missing out on him again this year especially if (okay, when) Todd Haley leaves for Arizona.  I guess we'll see though.

And 7-9 with an offensive line that was about as talented as cardboard cutouts of them would have been isn't that terrible. AJ Smith burned down a great team John Butler had put together, but for some reason people who aren't paying attention blame Norv for AJ's failings.
