whatshisname: So not much worse than those douches who wander around with a Bluetooth unit glued into their ear?

I hate that so much.

I have a friend who is like that, he's a freelance computer tech (mostly residential work) who must feel that some grandma is going to call him in a panic because she cannot get her email, and milliseconds count because keeping a cell phone in his pocket just isn't quite enough.

If you're driving, the bluetooth earpiece is fine. Preferred, even. But when you're hanging out with your friends at midnight, take it out, you douche.

Nogale: Why don't they figure out a way to implant computers into the human body and have done with it? That's where we're headed.

psychosis_inducing: Only thing that worries me is that the roads are going to get more hazardous when these become commonplace. A bunch of drivers checking Facebook, harvesting their Farmville crops (or whatever the big fad is), posting to Reddit in the morning will be worse than everyone with cell phones.

And then there's the drivers who have a phone call and their breakfast while on the highway. They'll add the glasses to all the other distractions.

Clearly they need to ban these, then.

Additionally, I'm concerned about all of these new semi-automatic handguns. The roads are going to get more hazardous when these become commonplace. A bunch of drivers pinking tin cans, bagging deer (or whatever the big game is), cleaning their Glocks each morning will be worse than everyone with cell phones.

And then there's the drivers who have a phone call and their breakfast while on the highway. They'll add the guns to all the other distractions.

Clearly we need to ban guns. You know, for the children.

0Icky0: How you will really look:

Dammit, I not only laughed but almost couldn't restrain myself from trying to pop that thing on his chin.

Because you don't already look like a tool with your face glued to your cellphone all the time.

Only real problem I see is the inability to see through them. Having that thing blocking a large portion of my vision all the time would suck.

A targeting overlay for driving would be pretty neat.

Only if said targeting overlay fired live weaponry.

Otherwise it's just one step past GPS's in overreliance on technology.

/still does it with a paper map, ruler, speedometer and clock
/And I'm still accurate within one minute for distances up to at least 2500 miles

Greywar: I wouldnt hesitate to spend $500 on these...IF the apps are there.

I hear you dude. I'm waiting for a "That's a man!" app and "Where's that clitoris?" GoogleMaps though.

That's pretty awesome. I used to do SCCA TSD rallys back in the day.

I guess I should clarify a little bit too about "overreliance on technology".

While it's not my cup of tea, I don't blame people who use GPSes for long distance trips to new places and navigating around unfamiliar cities. However, I know people who insist on using their GPS to get to the grocery store. The same grocery store they go to every week. Because they are afraid of getting lost.

TFA says: "The potential uses of a pair of smart glasses are ... [to] make sure you're walking in the right direction according to your maps app"

That's freaking scary to me.

I can't wait until Apple invents this technology.

There is indeed a new series. Red Dwarf X. It ran late last year on Dave.

I stand corrected, embarrassed and excited. Thank you very much!

ck1938: Deep Space Nine pretty much got the pad right. I guess this is one more prediction fulfilled.

The Next Generation also had a take on this with the Borg.
