So, if we could enforce the "mental health" qualification for gun ownership, When can we start enforcing the "mental health" qualification for congress?

Mrbogey: James F. Campbell: Conservatives and other nut jobs only understand negative liberty, not positive liberty.

Why do you think people are nutjobs for not believing in fictitious things?

By all means, attempt to show me how you have a right to something provided by someone else.

First, define "provided." Because, you know, civilization, society, the give and take of resources and freedoms of various extents so we function as social creatures. You already know the usual answers. Roads, clean water, infrastructure, protection... if these don't count, what is "provided?"

IvanTheSilent: Yeah, no sympathy for the paramilitary forces that are our current law enforcement orginizations.

You know, when I moved to the US, it striked me how all the cops I talked to were scared. They can't talk to a civilian without having their hand right above their gun, and they were obviously very nervous and scanning around every single time. It doesn't surprise me that they end up shooting a lot of people... Hell, I felt like they would shoot me if I farted too loud or something.

And do you know why they're scared like that? Because anyone could have a gun. In the UK and Ireland, the cops don't even have guns, and they sure as hell don't look afraid when talking to people in the street.

So yeah, the more guns all over the place, the more your police force has to become a paramilitary organization.

Hey trotsky, how have you managed such conversations? I'm in the rather strange position of having to argue the "conservative" side in favor of the Second Amendment with my surprisingly more liberal friends (you might remember our conversation a few months ago re: Mosin Nagants where I called myself "the libbiest lib that ever libbed", or some such nonsense), and I haven't been able to make *them* see reason, either.

I see a lot of foaming at the mouth from both sides, while I'm trying to walk a middle path of "responsible" gun ownership with my ever-growing collection of mosins, my grandpa's old 250 Savage with a Mauser receiver/bolt assembly (don't ask...) and a couple of handguns I bought with the intent to get my CCW, and I just can't seem to talk to anyone about reasonable restrictions and the value and necessity of the right to bear arms without being regarded as a gun-loving nutbag by one side and a fascist liberal on the other.

So how do we reasonable folk manage?

I traversed a dominion
Whose spokesmen spake out strong
Their purpose and opinion
Through pulpit, press, and song.
I scarce had means to note there
A large-eyed few, and dumb,
Who thought not as those thought there
That stirred the heat and hum.

When, grown a Shade, beholding
That land in lifetime trode,
To learn if its unfolding
Fulfilled its clamoured code,
I saw, in web unbroken,
Its history outwrought
Not as the loud had spoken,
But as the mute had thought.

These people think of themselves as being on par with the patriots who started the revolution. Here's a tip for them:

1. Make sure your cause is worth fighting for. I mean, really REALLY understand it. Fiercely KNOW that you are right and the people you want to fight are wrong. Believe it, hold it dear, and be willing to never back off of it. And be sure it is something worth all of that. Because:
2. Once you do something tremendously bold, like write a letter to the king declaring yourself independent (or post a video on the internet saying you will kill people in defense of your position), you can't "take it back" or edit it for content when you realize you were just being a hair-trigger douchebag tough-guy who was all talk and no action. When the red coats showed up and said "What's all this, then?" the American revolutionaries didn't say "Oh... hey, look... we were in a bit of a bad mood and we didn't really mean 'independent' as much as we meant 'located elsewhere.' You understand, right? I mean, hey, taxes are kinda high and we're kinda miffed and all, but we're cool. Right?"

I don't think a lot of these weekend patriots really get this part. The idea of "hang together or hang separately" hasn't gotten through to them yet, or if it has, they don't appreciate that "hanging" means they really truly get to die for their cause.

It shows how effective Drudge has become in the conservative echo chamber.
He takes a clumsy statement from Biden (Whoa, now THAT's a first isn't it?)

within minutes.
