Not that surprising. If you've been eating somewhere or using a service and it falls under heavy criticism, you oppose that criticism because it would call your own judgement into question. They're acting in opposition to anything that would disrupt the state they've accepted.

Your average consumer is pretty much a fleshy culture inductor.

Driving along one day, in the countryside, I couldn't figure out why these two rednecks in an F-150 were flipping me off. Then I remembered I was in a Chevy.

I mean, seriously? People do Ford vs. Chevy in the 21st century?

Because they're thoroughly uncreative musicians that put out bland, paint-by-numbers music? That's why I hate them, anyway.

Only if you want to pay retail for service, accessories, upgrades, etc.

There's nothing wrong with loyalty - loyalty is something that's earned. "Blind faith" is something else entirely.

I like Apple products for two reasons: they suit my needs, and in times of trouble they've hooked me the f*ck UP; that means I'm more likely to stay with them for future purchases. That loyalty would become blind faith, hence irrational, if they made garbage then dicked me on support, yet I kept buying from them.

Well because Apple overcharges for everything, hates free speech as evidenced by their use of patents and by not using an open-source operating system, and their maps app shows how incompetent they are as a company, yet some people still smugly defend them.

Try talking to any iPhone user for five minutes and you'll understand.

I read that as bands instead of brands, so I thought this was going to be a music thread.

At the same time, I was wondering why the headline made no sense.

Oh well...

Kamelot - March of Mephisto
Dream Theater - Dance of Eternity
Stolen Babies - A Year of Judges

Never understood the 'hate' some people have towards Nickelback. I can see them not being some people preference for music, but to hate them seems a little extreme. If you don't like em, don't listen to them, but to go out of your way to hate a band? What 'scandal' was Nickelback involved in?

I wonder if the same phenomenon happens with demagogues. As in people with low self-esteem are more likely to stand by a certain important public figure whom they deeply respect. A politician's most steadfast supporter's could be his most humble ones.

I have an iPhone 3 and I could give farkall about use of patents and an open-source operating system. It's a farking phone. It plays little games. I've got an app that tracks my flights. It does all of these things about as well as Samsung, much like a Ford hauls manure about as well as a Chevy.

BTW, since Apple users are smug, can you tell me which stereotypes to apply to Samsung owners? I assume they are the kind of people that like to use a phone to accomplish tasks and are not at all like those iPhone users who smugly use a phone to accomplish tasks.

Jesus. If I ever tie my ego to a brand then I hope someone stabs me in the face.

I used to defend products blindly. Then every one of them let me down in one form or another.

Back in '83 it was the most kick-assingest Aiwar portable tape player. It was the iPod Touch of my youth. It could run through the whole tape without the need to flip it, had great sound, and even had DOLBY. Then the headphone sockets got squirrelly. Repeat for virtually everything, and then you realize they're all just toasters of one form anther that will eventually break. The same goes for services or politicians. They all let you down eventually.

Now I just get the most reliable item that fits my needs and hope it doesn't break.

*shrug* I don't know. I think Nickelback is fine. Sure, all of their songs are very carefully designed and engineered by cynical producers who have discovered a very successful "how to make a hit alt-metal song" formula, and follow that formula with no change or variation on every single song they've released. But who gives a damn?

Think of Nickelback like the McDonald's drive through. Nobody is upset when they get a Big Mac that is 100% identical to every other Big Mac they've ever eaten, right? So when you hear a new Nickelback song for the very first time, why are you disappointed that it sounds exactly like every other Nickelback song? Sure, you can predict every chord change, every tempo change, and even most of the lyrics for the entire song within the first 10 seconds or so, but who cares? Nickelback sure as hell doesn't. Those guys are soooo rich.

Seriously, here's a thought experiment. You get one album for the rest of your life, and it has to be Nickelback, or Def Lepperd. Which would you choose? See? Nickelback isn't the suckiest band in the history of sucky bands.

Not true. I have a Facebook page and am embarrassed to say that. I only keep it up so girls that I never see or heard from in years can contact me. I have had many from my past do this. I will defend it works for intended purpose, but girls force me to have a page. How else are they going to find me if I have changed my number 4-5 times in the past 8 years? I don't remember their emails, why should they remember mine? What am I defending here and did I just say I have low self-esteem?

I apologize if I just took 20 seconds of your life away... Yeah, sorry about that.

Have a good weekend.

Given the same price, why would anyone pick the "about as well" option rather than the slightly better one? Answer that and you'll understand. For what it's worth, there's plenty of folks who have no specific brand loyalty, but maintain some brand disloyalties. Example, the "I won't drink and Starbucks because they put all the local shop out of business" people.

Rapmaster2000: BTW, since Apple users are smug, can you tell me which stereotypes to apply to Samsung owners?

They hate Apple users.

Well, some people don't like Nickelback because Chad Kroeger is an annoying douchebag asshole. Even more annoying since people have had to hear all the stupid lovey-dovey shiat with his marriage to Avril Lavigne. That's nice he's found his pop music soulmate but I hope his previous common law wife gets the mansion and keeps his drunk driving ass out of town.

Is one really better for what I need? Can you tell me how my life will be improved by purchasing a new Samsung phone?

And after having purchased said phone, should defend its superior utility vs. other phones. Should I show great pride in my purchase? Should I be concerned about the statement this brand says about me as a human being?

I wonder if people look at my phone and think "look at that guy with his phone! He thinks he's so great. Oooh, he's so smug. Look at him there... talking on the phone. What a loser. I possess a superior way of making calls and web surfing."
