I bet you that if you asked Stephen Hawking himself, he'd like the idea of a machine body for himself.

Twisted and evil.

But he'd be dead by now if he lived inn one of those socialist government healthcare countries, just remember that

its an interesting idea she was presenting. as long as hawking himself wasn't offended i don't see what the big deal is

I read the whole article but am a bit confused. Is she suggesting that Stephen Hawking get an abortion?

2013-01-11 02:42:35 PM
His super-massive black hole was about two meters across. Disappointed, I am.

Much of the way we think and behave is influenced by hormones and moods and such. I guess a "brain" in a vat would still need all those extra influences. Could you imagine a living brain without those influences? You'd have a Prof Hawking brain in a robot body without those little feelings that tell you killing everyone might be a sad thing to do.

Should have described him as "More Human Than Human".

A quick reading of the article doesn't really indicate that she said anything too dramatic. It might have been insensitive, but I don't think she's "denigrating his humanity", so much as making a point about how awesome it is that he can, even without a functional body, still be considered one of the greatest scientists.

Also, the line : "On this day it's worth examining just who and what we are really celebrating: the man, the mind or the machines?" Makes a good point about the nature of celebrity.

If Hawking were not in the chair, he probably would not be famous. He'd probably still be brilliant, but there are lots of brilliant unknown scientists. But we love a good underdog sob story.

Daily Fail tempest in a teacup.

From what I understand.. He can be described thusly...

I explode like a bomb, no one is spared,
my power is my mass times the speed of light squared.
Hoes on my tip, 15 bullets in my clip,
my hand rests heavy on my pistol grip.
Doomsday cuts it up like a Shaolin monk,
pumping the funk in your junk-trunk punk.
There's no escaping here, I'm gonna beat you out of shape,
like a farking black hole even light can't escape.
Got the mind to bust a rhyme to make your brain bleed,
other rappers talk shiat, but they gotta concede,
that I'm a 3 sandwich eatin', super-model meetin',
step to me punk and you're gonna get a beatin'.
So listen up biatch, 'cause there may be a test,
my style is smooth, but it's hard to digest.
My science is tight, rhymes faster than light,
like a ton of TNT I'm about to ignite.

I tear my soul apart and I
Eat it some more, yeah

Shadow Blasko: Well, yeah.. I like More Human than Human, but I thought MC Hawking would be better for the subject at hand.

You see me now a veteran of a thousand psychic wars
I've been living on the edge so long, where the winds of limbo roar
And I'm young enough to look at, and far too old to see
All the scars are on the inside
I'm not sure that there's anything left of me

Don't let these shakes go on, it's time we had a break from it
It's time we had some leave
We've been living in the flames
We've been eating up our brains
Oh please, don't let these shakes go on.

You ask me why I'm weary, why I can't speak to you
You blame me for my silence, say it's time I changed and grew
But the war's still going on, dear, and there's nowhen that I know
And I can't stand forever
I can't say if we're ever gonna be free

Don't let these shakes go on, it's time we had a break from it
It's time we had some leave
We've been living in the flames
We've been eating up our brains
Oh please, don't let these shakes go on.

You see me now a veteran of a thousand psychic wars
My energy is spent at last, and my armor is destroyed
I have used up all my weapons, and I'm helpless and bereaved
Wounds are all I'm made of
Did I hear you say that this is victory?

Don't let these shakes go on, it's time we had a break from it
Send me to the rear
Where the tides of madness swell
And men sliding into hell
Oh please, don't let these shakes go on.

MND Association branded her comments 'dehumanising and disrespectful'

Normally, when some rights activists get up in arms, it's just annoying, they're usually blowing something way the fark out of proportion.

Here you have somebody who is truly not letting a disability slow him down, he's one of the greatest minds of multiple generations, and is able to continue to deliver, as his body wastes away. Sure, he has the help of some rather amazing tech that some kid from the wrong side of the tracks wouldn't get, but that doesn't change the fact that Hawking should be a worldwide example of not letting life get you down. Besides, he's still more man than machine, no matter what this stupid twunt says.

Has anyone asked what Dr Hawking thinks about the comments? Or is everyone just enjoying vicarious outrage?

maggiemcneill.files.wordpress.com

One of cartoonist Gary Larson's more famous cartoons shows two chimpanzees grooming. One finds a blonde human hair on the other and inquires, "Conducting a little more 'research' with that Jane Goodall tramp?" Goodall herself was in Africa at the time, and the Jane Goodall Institute thought this was in bad taste, and had their lawyers draft a letter to Larson and his distribution syndicate, in which they described the cartoon as an "atrocity". They were stymied by Goodall herself when she returned and saw the cartoon, as she stated that she found the cartoon amusing. Since then, all profits from sales of a shirt featuring this cartoon go to the Jane Goodall Institute. Goodall wrote a preface to The Far Side Gallery 5, detailing her version of the controversy, and the Institute's letter was included next to the cartoon in the complete Far Side collection. She praised Larson's creative ideas, which often compare and contrast the behavior of humans and animals.

Rob Zombie. More Human than Human pales in comparison to anything White Zombie.  For that matter, everything Rob Zombie has done since White Zombie combined together doesn't equal one White Zombie measure.

Get yourself a vehicle with a manual transmission, and a fantastic sound system, and turn on Black Sunshine.

Also, I would've thought for the particular topic at hand, this might be a better choice of lyrics (though I think both MC Hawking and Rob Zombie beat it)..

I'm not man or machine
I'm just something in between
(Whoa-oa-whoa-oh-whoa)
I'm all love, a dynamo
So push the button and let me go
(Whoa-oa-whoa-oh-whoa)
You want me to come alive
Just flick the switch into overdrive
You and me can let it be
Ready-Aim-Fire
Touch that dial - Turn me on
Start me like a motor, make me run
Lovin' every minute of it
Lovin' every minute of it
Turn that dial all the way
Shoot me like a rocket into space
Lovin' every minute of it
Lovin' every minute of it
Lovin' every minute of it C'mon
I got fun, you want some
I'm ever ready, Dr. Love
(Whoa-oa-whoa-oh-whoa)
I'm antenna, aerial
I'm tunin' in I'm outta control
(Whoa-oa-whoa-oh-whoa)
You got love, you got a deal
You wanna drive then take the wheel
You and me can let it be
Ready-Aim-Fire
Touch that dial - Turn me on
Start me like a motor, make me run
Lovin' every minute of it
Lovin' every minute of it
Turn that dial all the way
Shoot me like a rocket into space
Lovin' every minute of it
Lovin' every minute of it
Lovin' every minute of it Alright
Oh, You want me to come alive
Just flick the switch into overdrive
You and me can let it be
Ready-Aim-Fire
Touch that dial - Turn me on
Start me like a motor, make me run
Lovin' every minute of it
Lovin' every minute of it
Turn that dial all the way

Lovin' every minute of it
Whoa-oa-whoa-oh-whoa
