I got to the third from the last word in the headline before realizing this wasn't about cars.

He might be not be a conventional QB, but he still has a better winning pct than Kyle Orton.

Surprised it took a day for a greenlight thread to pop up. You'd think the Jets tab would have had at least 5 of these approved 10 minutes after the story came out.

Well, Tebow benefited from a Broncos D, no question about it. But Orton also had that same D and yet his record is horrible.

Although the Broncos results were clearly better with Manning, last season was the most exciting seasonI can recall.

The Broncos scored an average of 21 Points those first 5 games they went 1-4. The rest of the season they averaged 18.5 so.... their offense was better later in the season by scoring less per game?
Likewise, their defense gave up an average of 28pts those first 5 games and averaged 23pts after the bye week. It would seem to me that the numbers say their offense did not get better, but their defense did. How about that?

So Tebow is down to the three options we've been talking about for the last year.

1. Check out the CFL, sign with a team, learn how to be a good football quarterback and get 10 meters in three downs. Then triumphantly come back to the NFL like Flutie did. (13% chance of happening.)

2. Suck up some pride, take a job playing another position and have a somewhat good career at TE or FB or HB or whatever he may be good at. (15%)

3. Hang on til the bitter end, never get signed by another team, retire from the NFL and be approached by a GOP PAC about running for congress in a district that would likely elect him. Remain in congress doing nothing of note for his career and vote party lines without crafting a single piece of legislation. (72%)

Its not so simple

Tebow turned the ball over less then Orton
Tebow Kept the offense on the field longer which means the Defense had longer time between plays

so of course they would improve

Let's remember that the Chargers' game that Orton started, the defense scored the only TD of the first half (where Orton played) and the offense, when led by Tebow, scored 14 of those points.

So of the 24 points in that game, Orton's offense was responsible for 3.

To align his political future and prolong his NFL career, Arizona is probably his best bet. The Cardinals have a fairly good defense and need a QB, and in five years McCain will be 82 and Tebow will be eligible for the US Senate.

karasoth: Its not so simple

That's also because they went from being a more standard 50/50 run/pass offense to a heavier run offense. Yes, Orton turned the ball over more, but he also passed much more per game (30 Att/G). Tebow had plays called that were to his strength, running (19 Att/G). Tebow also had 14 fumbles in the games he played too (only 3 recovered). So... looking like more of a wash to me in terms of turn overs too. So, let's do a TO/G comparison shall we?

Orton 5G 7 INT 2Fum 0 rec = 9 net TOs for 1.8 per game

Tebow 14G (11started) 6INT 14 Fum 3 rec = 17 net TOs for 1.5 per start or 1.2 per game

So, yes, technically Tebow turned the ball over less, but not by much if you look at it on a per start basis.
Trying to track down the ToP stats to verify.

ya know i'm tired of hearing about the Broncos D, they surely did do an admirable job when Tebow was starter but it's not like they didn't get embarrassed by Ryan farkin' Fitzpatrick much less Tom Brady... everytime they faced a pass-heavy QB with good receivers that defense got shredded

imo to get a real picture for that team you have to look at turnovers on offense... consecutively when they started the season and went 1-4 they went: 2 fumbles & 1 interception (L), 2 fumbles (W), 2 interceptions (L), 1 fumble & 3 interceptions (L), 1 interception (L)

you look at the rest of their season? 1 fumble (W), 2 fumbles & 1 interception (L), 0 turnovers (W), 0 turnovers (W), 1 fumble (W), 0 turnovers (W), 2 fumbles (W), 1 fumble (W), 3 fumbles (L), 1 fumble & 3 interceptions (L), 1 fumble & 1 interception (L)

there's a trend there, if tebow or orton didn't throw an interception the team won by an avg. margin of 4.5 points

if either of them threw an interception or they fumbled more than twice then game's over and they're losing by an avg. margin of 15 points

the only game they lost and didn't have an interception was against the patriots in the postseason when that Denver D looked like notre dame's against Alabama

Night Night Cream Puff: Trying to track down the ToP stats to verify.

Had to cobble together the ToP from the box scores on NFL.com and I didn't bother spreadsheeting it, but here's the breakdown.

Orton's 5 games an average of 26.7 mins (zero overtimes)
Tebows 11 games an average of 31 mins (3 overtimes)
I didn't bother trying to dig deeper into just regulation ToP because that would take quite a while, but I imagine those 3 OT games help pad that number by a small bit, but probably not a huge amount. Both Orton and Tebow had some pretty big stinkers with a 19min ToP and 22 min ToP respectively.

So we're looking at an improvement of about 3 min/game. Which isn't all that shocking as more running plays = clock not getting stopped. Again, nothing earth shattering to prove the offense was better with Tebow. Still looks like a wash to me in terms of offense.

I dunno about raw deal, per se, but Orton is the better than Tebow. Orton is still backup material and that he got a couple years as a starter and has since faded is probably about right.

Re: Plummer. I would point to the Cutler-Plummer debacle as the beginning of the end for Shanahan in Denver. Plummer is a terrific QB for the Shanahan naked-bootleg offense and getting Denver to the AFC title game isn't a small feat. Quarterback wasn't an issue here so why we spent a lot of calories to draft Cutler is still a mystery. Also a mystery is why Cutler replaced Plummer when Denver was 7-3 in 2006 and still a solid bet for the playoffs. They lost four of their next six after that and you know the rest.
