Stupid, because they owed those people jobs?

Someone at AMEX opened a newspaper from 1998.

Unless you have a *lot* of money to burn Platinum/Centurion Travel Service were typically useless. What kept it afloat is that they had plenty of people with money to burn. Now, not so much.

I believe Amex used to (still does?) outsource its online presence to Travelocity. I just did a pay-with-points, however, that will net me a round trip ticket to Istanbul for 34,000 points. Hard to beat the redemption value, in general. Plus I can bank 10,000 miles to United from it so I'm really only using 24,000 points, on the basis that they're somewhat fungible.

the silver lining is that Amex's other divisions are still hiring.

because retailers are refusing to pay their overpriced fees

I can't tell you how many times I have heard "anything except American Express

But how will I get a bundled deal on traveler's cheques now?!?

They can't be outsourcing. Largely because almost every town in America already has a China Express.

I would say 95% of the places I go are happy to take my AMEX cards. That is good, because I get great rewards with my blue card.

It is an expensive card to take but this is about my experience too. And places that don't take it I used to not go as often. My ultimate destination for points typically is ANA's mileage program so I went and got an ANA Visa so I can get points where I want them regardless of whether Amex is accepted.

We're weaning ourselves off Amex in favor of our sweet Visa card. Much lower costs and better rebates with the latter. And fewer people say "sorry, no Visa" than "put that Amex away".

I don't understand Subby's snark. If AMEX saw this coming (which I assure you they did) would this have not cost jobs?

Sometimes a business line becomes unprofitable and people lose their jobs.

Having AMEX is like having the Mafia for fraud protection. They take that shiat seriously.

Plus the will fedex you a card the next day if you report it lost.

somehow i just dont give a fark when i hear of mass layoffs/fireings from banks or credit card companies.

/use a credit union, you wont feel like you are pissing on every other human being that gets routinely farked by those companies.

The purpose of a credit card is to build up your credit score so that you're more likely to be approved for a mortgage or car loan later on. Use it for routine expenses like groceries and pay it off every month. Use a credit union for checking/saving.

Amex customer service is fantastic. They take fraudulent charges seriously and overnight you a new card if the old one is lost or compromised.

Their customer service is based in the us at least in my experience. The blue card has no annual fee, a ton of benefits and cash back.

Also it has a chip in it so it can be used with the new European card readers unlike many other cards.
