Bladel: "For the longest time I just really wanted to know what was wrong with me," she said. "When I was finally diagnosed I felt like it came too late."
As a parent of a kid who required hundreds of hours of speech therapy just to be able to finish a sentence, people like this really piss me off.

There's at least a little redemption in being able to tell immediately that something's odd and get the appropriate counseling, training, etc. It's a whole other kind of burden to go for decades realizing that you just can't seem to click with people without being able to understand why, especially when you later find out that skilled help was available.

Bladel: clydedog: I_Am_Weasel: minoridiot: BarkingUnicorn: First story I read about her said she had "borderline Asperger's syndrome."  But Fox, of course, had to amp it up a bit.

Is that like being borderline pregnant?

Only if there is a pregnancy spectrum.

Borderline means not on the spectrum. So this headline should be: "slightly weird, socially awkward girl is pageant contestant". BFD.

Pretty much this.  Altho I might tack on "trying to garner sympathy points from media & pageant judges"

...or just "Homeschooled Kid Wins Montana Beauty Pageant". Same thing.

I'm not a medical professional but I thought borderline meant right on the cusp of making a definitive diagnosis meaning at this point it's sort of a matter of opinion.

It's not like autism is a binary condition like pregnancy.

I don't know if doctors use a system of scoring to determine it, but if she's only 1% away from being autistic on the scale I'd say that's within a margin of error.

To be perfectly fair, that would put her on the autism spectrum, according to DSM-V. That said, this is FOX News; I'm kind of surprised to hear them accepting any definitions beyond the original DSM.

The Angry Hand of God: I am growing so tired about hearing about people with autism, ADD, ADHD, Asperger's, etc. Can't people just stop making up names for these so-called "conditions," and take some responsibility? I get it, you are socially awkward. When I was a kid, that would just mean that you gotten beat up here and there, but you would just go home as the beaten up weird kid, not some completely dysfunctional, Ritalin popping mess with some poorly diagnosed trendy "disease" caused by getting too many vaccinations.

My nephew is autistic for real, not borderline or awkward like this girl. He is making a lot of progress but still has a lot of very serious issues. So, f*ck off..

FTFA She said she struggles to communicate at times. She also said she often takes things too literally.

Looking clueless and giving stupid answers is pretty much an asset for a beauty pageant, so in fact a 'sperger might even possess an advantage.

Talk to the guys who put out the DSM the current volume gets rid of all of the different diagnoses and just calls it all Autism, levels 1-4 I believe.

So she could be Autism Level 1

Happy Hours:

There is a scoring model, 4 different groups of "symptoms" . You score 2 in group 1 and then 1 in the other three groups you're on the ASD.

Depending on the symptoms shown and the number of them you get a level 1-4 diagnosis. No more different diagnoses.

Pageants, and the training that goes into them, sounds pretty much like the perfect way to get someone who doesn't understand personal interactions to learn a formula for dealing with people.

doubled99: The pageant is for pretty girls. Technically, a brain dead woman could win.

You're thinking of Miss USA. Pretty is the only requirement for Trump's system. Miss America requires a "platform", aka some kind of cause, as well as a stage talent, which means most of the girls at Miss America have spent hundreds of hours involved in community service, in addition to the practice it requires to perform a talent in front of hundreds of people.

I would like to second that f*ck off. I've counseled college students on the autism spectrum and it's a lot more than being awkward. People with Asperger's don't understand social cues and do take things literally. One of my clients got in an argument with a professor and the professor told them "I'll do _______ when the cows come home." My client literally thought the professor was waiting for his cows to come home before he gave him a better grade. They also get horribly upset if routines change. People with more serious autism can't even communicate with others and some don't seem to want to, but people with Asperger's want to make friends but usually can't because they don't understand the unwritten social rules the rest of us seem to understand naturally so yeah you're either a troll or just dumb

IIRC, you had to have 3 of 5 criteria to be diagnosed as autistic, but that's all changing now, with the new DSM.

You could have really bad problems in 2 categories, but not be autistic, but someone with less severe problems in 3 categories would be.

clydedog was just making a joke. I'm sure he isn't actually that ignorant.

Aspies isn't categorized separately anymore according to the new DSM, so now they just drop the word and call is good ol' Autism, which is kinda misleading.

/If it had been any other news source you say "Journalism sucks!" but if it's Fox you say "Fox sucks!"

What? You need a diagnosis of some disorder to feel special, or something???

I don't get why people ignore trolls. They're half the reason I read Fark.
