Amazing what your brain decides to hold on to: I saw isoamyl acetate - and immediately thought "banana" - from a job I had 20 years ago working with flavor oils. Opening the fridge with all the different oils to get a sample was an experience!

American Strong Ale, according to Beer Advocate. But as for taste I think the reason you get "IPA" is that it is a bit forward in the hop department with pine and tart citrus flavor like grapefruit. Which makes sense because I think it uses American hops like Chinook and perhaps Amarillo. But not as hoppy as a standard IPA.

Smoked malts are amazing. They've expanded quite a bit outside classic Rauchbier styles. We have a Micro Brewery here on Long Island called Blind Bat. They have a "Hellsmoke Porter" that makes you think you were eating a pulled pork sandwich at that very moment and just followed it with as swig of beer. It's sublime.

From his website; "In the case of my Hellsmoke Porter, I smoke a portion of the grains myself over alder and applewood."

How can you go wrong?

That's because it's Oaked.

When you use Oak in brewing, either putting the beer in an aged oak barrel or onto oak chips, it imparts flavors of the wood itself and anything that's been in it before. You get a nice flavor from the oak, but it also mellows the sharper flavors at the same time.

I make it a point to try a new/different beer as often as possible. Lat one was a Weyerbacher "Blithering Idiot" Barleywine. Surprisingly tasty, not too hoppy, smooth and very drinkable for a 11.1% ABV brew. Definitely on the "buy again" list.

Because "funk" covers several descriptors that tend to be subjective in nature. Suggesting a beer has "funk" to someone is acceptable, but not precise. It's usually expected to elaborate on your particular perception of the "funk." Some might pick up more of a general barnyard aroma, while others might gather a more specific trait such as sweaty horse blanket, for example. It's used quite commonly to state whether or not the beer has any funky character, usually followed by the type of funk one picks up from said beer. It's a legit term in beer judging and tasting.

Yeah I mean...isn't being laid out in a wheel is supposed to imply that opposing flavors reside at opposite sides of the wheel or something? So you can create complementary combinations and so forth. Bubblegum is the opposite of Tropical Fruit? Unless I misunderstand flavors I don't really see that kind of relationship going on, I imagine it would be more natural to have this in some kind of hierarchical table or something.

Late as always, but wow, it looks like nobody on Fark has ever taken a sensory analysis class. Flavor wheels are like phylogenetic trees, with the trees being wheels, and the phylogiston being flavors. They're also pretty common for wine. They're also not infographics, because they convey no data.

But they're highly interesting to people like me, who understand what they represent and can be used for.
