Awww, how cute, they've started taking themselves seriously. Look guys, nobody is going to watch the players "for their athletic abilities," because their athletic abilities just aren't that great. People can see better in college football. The reason people watched this was the sex appeal and novelty. You take that away, there is no reason to watch.

Oh well, good luck to them, I expect this to fail spectacularly.

Good. Face it, women want to play football. Real actual football that isn't some guy's masturbation aid. They put up with the lingerie because at least the lingerie got them on the field playing in an actual league with wins and losses and standings and playoffs and title games. Now that the idea of women playing football isn't a laugh-inducing thing anymore, they'd like to get serious about the whole thing and play in pads like everyone else. They don't want to be a frat-boy distraction. That is not their aspiration. They want to be treated like actual athletes.

And the fact that 'let's lose the lingerie' is being instantly equated with 'let's shut down the league' is really a bit infuriating.

They probably want to be able to merchandise to a wider demographic. I'd assume their branding extends to what, calendars and some photobooks or something? They want to be able to slap their logo on balls, apparel, stuff for the kids, etc. My guess is they're going to try to ride the line between sexy and professional. I doubt they'll drop sexy calendars and the like, but if they can at least keep up a facade of wholesomeness, they can probably hit higher TV numbers and attendance numbers. It's definitely a huge gamble, but as long as they offset the lost fans somewhere, especially somewhere that buys merch, they might find a new balance.

Besides, let's be cynical for a minute: it's still a novelty. It's just a novelty based on societal expectations instead of fappability. How many companies wouldn't think of using someone from the "Lingerie Football League" but would find one of the first "pro women football stars" a good publicity hook?

Train wreck or success, it's a damn ballsy business move.

Well, they have to farking TRY at some point. They can't be making some 50-year legacy of boners.

Look around society these days. Anything man-card-related is taking a beating lately. There's pressure to clean up football. Soccer, viewed as distinctly non-manly in America, is on the rise. Guns, whatever the NRA will tell you, are getting more demonized. Political policy aimed towards women that would have been acceptable 50 years ago is viewed as abhorrent now, as potentially campaign-demolishing. I'd argue that women have a stronger, more prolific roster in the music industry right now than the men do. You even have more women picking up a hammer and doing home repair. Guys like this are viewed less and less as 'men' and more and more like 'douchebags'.

And now the Lingerie Football League is losing the lingerie. It's a natural progression.

2013-01-10 09:21:39 PM
When the dust settles, it'll be interesting to see what happens to the league. Can the LFL succeed where leagues like the Women's Professional Football League, the National Women's Football Association, or American Football Women's League before it failed?

Sounds familiar:
"When I first came here, this was all swamp. Everyone said I was daft to build a castle on a swamp, but I built in all the same, just to show them. It sank into the swamp. So I built a second one. That sank into the swamp. So I built a third. That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp. But the fourth one stayed up. And that's what you're going to get, Lad, the strongest castle in all of England."

I have worked as part of the officiating crew for this sport.

It's an extremely.... odd experience. Doesn't feel like a real sport, more like an entertainment show thingy. Like wrestling. There are lots of catfights and the refs are taught to break them up but not break them up too well, like Jerry Springer security. The audience seems to be about 90% drunk college fratboys who spend the whole time oggling the girls. And 10% middle aged men in trenchcoats sitting by themselves, with binoculars.

But really, the attraction is the girls are wearing barely anything (and they don't get paid). I guess they want to expand the brand and attract families and kids, and if they're going to do that the lace has got to go.

Yeah but have you seen what girls wear to work out in these days? It's pretty much the same thing. A sports bra and some cheeky volleyball shorts, that's a proper football outfit. Just remove the frilly stuff and the garter belt and that's what they're already wearing.

People watch sports to see the biggest, strongest, fastest etc.

Anyone who doesn't understamd this is being willfully ignorant.

Women can and should play all the sports they want. They cannot demand anybody pay them for it. Neither can you.

this is either the smartest or the stupidest business move they could possibly make. the entire appeal of their league and their main selling point is the fact that their women wear skimpy uniforms. they could take that away and still have the uniforms be sexy, just more protective. but the less time people spend staring at the player's exposed midriffs, the more time they'll spend actually watching the game. and let's face it, the game isn't that great and the player's really aren't all that good. on the other hand, the league has reached a point that most football fans have at least heard of it, so ditching the lingerie gimmick to become more respectable could give them the opportunity to widen their fan base, as well as increase their merchandising capabilities. it's a huge gamble. personally, i don't think it's going to work, and they'll probably go bankrupt in two years or less.

WhippingBoy: I'm not pissed off about anything. I just find it amusing that this "football league without lingerie" will only be an option for a couple of weeks, tops, before it's forced to fold due to bankruptcy.

And then they're just going to keep making leagues and making leagues until a lingerie-less league sticks. That, or the women are just going to make inroads into the men's teams, and unless you want the men to start wearing lingerie too...

Either way. Women want to play football. Serious, actual, legitimate football, and not just in special teams either. No pink, no lace, no bare skin, no bending over unless it's at the line of scrimmage, and taking big hits like the men do, from the men if need be. And they're not going to stop trying to make that happen.

It's sad. Part of the fun of the whole thing is that you went to the games to watch women in lingerie hit each other, and every now and then you'd see some AWESOME football. Seriously, go hunt down some highlight videos -- there's one where a quarterback gets nailed by an open-side hit (meaning, she sees it coming) but she still unleashes the dragon on time, to a receiver who's run past the coverage, turns around, and catches the touchdown pass falling down. That's a good football play in any league, AND THEY WERE WEARING LINGERIE THE WHOLE TIME.

It's like people are allergic to awesome.

Gosling: Good.

I can see going to a Lingerie Football League game as a novelty, but I'd be worried about being mistaken for a creep. I can also see going to a Legends Football League game as a novelty, but I'd be worried about being the only person in the stands who wasn't related to a player.

My dog also wants to talk. I want a solid-gold Bentley. Unfortunately, that's not the way the world works.

Does the NFL have some rule barring women from competing? Doubtful... it's probably more the point that women aren't as physically capable as men in the things that matter while playing football and thus can't be taken seriously as prospects.

Would it be misogynistic to create a watchable event that women naturally excel at more than men? I'm not going to give examples because there's nothing I could suggest without sounding chauvinistic. I guess the thought that's bugging me is that I never see women taking pride in things that they are better at than men, as if they themselves think they are not as impressive as the most impressive feats of men.

I don't think anyone watches now. I tuned in once and the arena was a ghost town. They tried to keep the empty seats out of frame but it only took a few glimpses to see that there were more people on the field than i the stands. And the game itself was terrible. Tiny field that's so small any reasonably successful play has a good chance of scoring. No punts or field goals. And not a single wardrobe malfunction.

Put the NFL in tshirts and shorts and use the same level of protective gear the ladies use and you would reduce concussions by 50% in less than a season.

These ladies should keep their uniforms the same.

The NFL has a thing about needing college players, and the colleges want high school players, and the high school coaches aren't overly inclined to take on women. So then what?

The 1% or so of women who are interested in playing football are free to play rec league football. They'll have to pay to play, of course, because nobody will pay to watch clothed women try to play football, just like nobody would pay to watch my shiny metal ass trying to play football.

I don't understand why we need boners in sports, advertising, video games and pretty farking much everywhere in this day and age. When I need a boner, my computer or my mobile have got me covered. Why would I want to be distracted otherwise? I actually find it a little insulting that I'm expected to buy shiat because boobs, but then again I'm not a frat boy.

My high school had a girl (backup) kicker, and our freshman team had a girl receiver (starter) during my senior year, I always thought that was pretty neat.

I said a sport. If you can be competitive in it, despite being drunk and 70 years old, it's not a sport.

If golf isn't a sport then neither is baseball. Perhaps the multiple players directly competing separates them? Great then curling and pool are sports if baseball is.

Let me know when pool players, curlers or golfers need to sprint a minimum of 90 feet, make diving plays or generally interact with a moving object that is traveling more than 2 miles an hour (that's something like 1.8 gigaparsec kilobucks to you metric curlers out there).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't curling involve competitive sweeping while gliding about gracefully? It's not a sport. It's a training program for future wives.

The NFL doesn't get everyone through the college draft. They also have pre-season tryouts. I don't know if any teams still have open tryouts, but that's possible. I'd imagine your best way to get an invite to tryout is to first tryout for a semi-pro team, which will have open tryouts. If you make the team, train hard and establish yourself at that level, there's a change a recruiter might invite you to tryout for their NFL team. A woman can take this route just the same as a man.

I don't know of a single major sports league in the US that's a mens-only league. They have "just sports" leagues and they have "women only" leagues.

Yes, the very elite men are better athletes than the very elite women at nearly every sport. Why does that mean that we can't have women's leagues?

Write your congressmanperson. I'm sure, in this entitled nation of ours, congress will be happy to take time out of their busy schedules to write a law or two that will address this egregious injustice in pro football. That way, when the NFL starts to tank, the government can subsidize them. You know, for equality.

Well, if nobody's going to watch a women's league unless it's a transparent excuse to see boobs, and the women just plain will not be permitted to compete alongside the men, what the hell are women supposed to do if they want to play professionally? Seriously. There needs to be a legitimate answer here.

You had the option to try to get into that condition. You're a guy. You had the path open to you. So did I. We just opted not to take that path. The women often are shut out from the very start. There is simply no path available for a woman that wants to play professional football (and the LFL isn't that path either; the players don't get paid and they even have to pay their own health insurance). Their problem is different than yours. Title IX came into being for a reason.

Could be.  Mind you, the average quarterback is built for speed and precision and just enough robustness to get tackled without, as you say, actually being crippled.  Beefier women are probably at least that tough (much less frequently than men, of course - there might be as many as ten men with the potential to be a QB for every woman).  You might even get the rare woman tough enough to be a receiver.  There's also the superior pain tolerance to consider.

Not gonna see too many women linebackers in a coed league, though, that's for damn sure.

Golf is a sport. Or maybe not, but one has to play a lot of weird games with how they define sport to keep baseball and leave off golf.

Technically, pool, golfing, darts are considered sports.  I don't feel they should be, in my mind a "sport" should require a certain level of physical exertion and athletic ability that they don't have.  Just like being able to compete professionally in Starcraft requires a tremendous amount of skill that most people don't have, I still don't consider people who play it athletes.  To me they're all games, not sports, but I don't get to define what is considered a sport (sadly).

That said, I consider Baseball to be a sport.  The sheer problem they have with steroid abuse shows that its more physical demanding than it appears on the surface.

That said, I find Baseball to be just as boring to watch as golf.  And I had to choose between playing a round of golf or playing softball, I'd choose golf.  But playing (and being good) at golf doesn't make me an athlete by any stretch of the imagination.

ShawnDoc: Technically, pool, golfing, darts are considered sports.

I really think ESPN or Bleacher Report or Deadspin or someone ought to have a survey on the whole sport/nonsport matter. Nobody's ever really put the matter to a nice, comprehensive vote far as I can tell. Gather up every sport we can think of, or everything that someone might even pretend is a sport (even the foregone-conclusion ones on either end, like basketball on one end and zorbing on the other, just so we have a full 0-100% spectrum; it does us no good if we come up saying everything's a sport or nothing is), and just have people run down the list going 'yes, no, no, yes, yes, yes, no, yes, no, no, yes'. And see where we stand.

It is kind of sad this will hands down be the best headline of 2013 purely because it points out how farked up our sense of reality isand it will never be seen again after the next few days.

Gosling: Well, if nobody's going to watch a women's league unless it's a transparent excuse to see boobs, and the women just plain will not be permitted to compete alongside the men, what the hell are women supposed to do if they want to play professionally? Seriously. There needs to be a legitimate answer here.

If they want to play pro, then they play, and if they can make money, they're pro. If they're as good as men they'll get coverage and make money. If not, it's because they aren't as good. Nothing stops women from playing football. The average NFL player is over 250 pounds and over 6 feet tall, and both of those statistics affect the game a lot; that's why you haven't seen a woman "break into" the NFL yet.

I agree that this dooms the league to failure, as nobody will watch it now.

That said, the lingerie football league is an embarrassment to society and America. So we've moved up a notch thanks to this change, IMO.

Gosling: Either way. Women want to play football. Serious, actual, legitimate football, and not just in special teams either. No pink, no lace, no bare skin, no bending over unless it's at the line of scrimmage, and taking big hits like the men do, from the men if need be. And they're not going to stop trying to make that happen.

That's cool. So do I, yet no one's going to watch a league of random office workers with little to no football training. People barely even watch the AFL, which is full of people that are on that bubble between NFL practice squad and not playing at all. There are guys who have been on NFL teams that weren't capable of making an AFL team. And no one gives a sh*t about that sport. Why would they go and watch women, who are exponentially worse at the game, play, unless they're getting something other than football out of the deal?

Gosling: You had the option to try to get into that condition.

Actually, I know of many girls who have played at least in HS. And I knew one that played line. They actually have an advantage at the younger ages because they mature faster. And also, if you're a 5'6" dude, you never had a path to playing professional football either.

Basically all of this. The LFL was pathetic and disgusting, so I commend them morally for ditching that business model. The problem is that there really isn't that much of a market for non-NFL professional football in America.

somewhat agree... but, also... i mean, lingerie wearing athletic women.

back to those respectable sports that coincidentally have scantily clad women athletes: volleyball, tennis, gymnastics, swimming, diving, track and field (at least javelin), mma, and... let's see, what else am i missing

Gosling: Good.

And the fact that 'let's lose the lingerie' is being instantly equated with 'let's shut down the league' is really a bit infuriating.

you sound fat...

Is there any appropriate area of life where women can sell sex?

I assume hold equal disgust for any area of life in which attractiveness matters?

(and if these women aren't paid then you definitely can't get too mad at exploitation - they are the very definition of volunteering)

I don't watch the lfl. I have an internet full of better options.

Smackledorfer: no talent ass clown: Gosling: no talent ass clown: Can anyone name a single, successful women's sports league in the United States?

LPGA?

I said a sport. If you can be competitive in it, despite being drunk and 70 years old, it's not a sport.

If golf isn't a sport then neither is baseball. Perhaps the multiple players directly competing separates them? Great then curling and pool are sports if baseball is.

Curling and baseball and pool are sports.

1. Some form of active participation. If you can play it on a computer, it's not a sport. Lookin' at you, Major League Poker.

2. Objective measure of who wins. You score the most points or go the fastest or jump the highest, you win. If you are judged on "artistic interpretation" or they throw out the highest and lowest scores to previent bias, it's not a sport.

This would make things like figure skating and gymnastics "not sports." I realize that they are athletic as all hell, but in the end, they are athletic exhibitions, and not sport.

It's Me Bender: Gosling: They don't have much skill because nobody lets women farking play serious football unless it's in a goddamned mud pit.

Still not sure if I should fav you as "retarded" or awesome troll".

The 1% or so of women who are interested in playing football are free to play rec league football. They'll have to pay to play, of course, because nobody will pay to watch clothed women try to play football, just like nobody would pay to watch my shiny metal ass trying to play football.

They have to pay to play in the Lingerie Football League, too. Seriously - a couple years ago, the owner decided that his 90% of profits weren't a good enough take away, and he converted the league to "amateur", with the women not getting paid, and having to pony up fees for uniforms and the like. It means that they also don't get any medical insurance. So, basically, it is rec league football, with a wider audience, but in exchange they have to play semi-naked and if they try to slip on an additional g-string or pasties, they face contractual fines of thousands of dollars.

You know what, though? I love football. I'll watch NFL football, college football, the new LFL football, the Independent Women's Football League, etc. If you refuse to watch football unless it's either just the pros or it's women in lingerie, then frankly, maybe you're not really a football fan - you just like watching men or women in tight spandex run around and grope each other. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but maybe you should mosey your sorry ass over to the entertainment tab and leave the sports tab for us sports fans.

A troll like that should have been put out at the beginning of the thread, fyi. You are doing it wrong.

If you honestly believe a preference for pro football means that the person doesn't like football but instead watches it for all those men in the tight spandex.... you might want to see a doctor and make sure your brain is still functioning.
