From the article: "The finding pinpoints perhaps the best target yet for a drug to block alcohol's effect and potentially treat alcoholism, the scientists say."

Huh.
Yeah.

That's not what I was thinking at first but I guess you could do that, too.

I was always of the school of thought that believed that children are just drunk and as you grow up you become more sober. I mean, look at little kids, they way they wobble around, slur their speech, and don't mind being on stage. Face it, they're trashed.

DOUGH... the stuff... that buys me beer...

RAY... the guy that sells me beer...

ME... the guy... who drinks the beer...

FAR... the distance to my beer...

SO... I think... I'll have a beer...

LA... la la la la la beer...

TEA... no thanks... I'm drinking beer...

That will bring us back to...

If someone could email me when they also find the proteins that are released when you eat hot wings and watch football, too, I'd be appreciative.

That's not what I was thinking at first but I guess you could do that, too.

If they made a synthesized drug that made you truely drunk; it would probably be outlawed, and carry unreasonably long punishments with mandatory minimums......or.....Budweiser 1000mg Liqui-caps would become very popular, and long bathroom lines would be a thing of the past.

you could carry a years supply o' good times in your front pocket. Guys would slip them into the punchbowl.

I think that if any discovery was EVER used for good, it was the one that led to "the pill."

yeah. Like weed and we all know how hard it is to get your hands on THAT stuff.

Hmmmm....

This reminds me of that obscure Stanford Dept. of Psych study from 1987 in which 1600 students were all given large amounts of alcohol and allowed to interact at a social setting. The study concluded that alcohol combined with an informal social atmosphere were inclined to make young adults more sexually promiscuous due to the disinhibiting effects of the ingestion of the alcohol combined with the peer-pressure to display mating ritual behavior in a social context.

Or, in other words: Duh.

This would annoy me if I wasn't drunk...

Why couldn't my school have done that? I mean, we had to organize our OWN damn parties and get our OWN damn beer.

But then again, I was a DJ (hence the DJ in DJEMONK), so I guess I'm okay with the way it went down at Penn State.

Why aren't they focusing on a no-hangover pill? It's not the alcohol that's the problem, it's all the vomiting and headaches.

I still want to get drunk, I just don't want to have to pay for it in the morning.

2003-12-11 04:39:49 PM
let me know when they can activate the right protein(s) so I don't have to pay the high price for ethanol.

Hangovers aren't so bad after the 3rd or 4th day. You get used to them. Not need for a pill.

Seems they should be able to do just that now that they've found the proteins/channels that cause drunkenness. It'll be interesting to see the gov's position on the legality of a 'make you drunk' pill.

Dangerous_sociopath Why aren't they focusing on a no-hangover pill? It's not the alcohol that's the problem, it's all the vomiting and headaches.

You don't get a hangover because of the alcohol. You get a hangover because you're dehydrated. Drink water. I always get a big glass of water along with whatever adult beverage I'm drinking and I dont get them anymore.

As for the vomiting, that's your body's reaction to what is basically a poison. If you throw up that means you need to cut back. I don't understand some people. I can go to a party and have two or three beers, maybe a couple of shots, and about two big glasses of water and I'll have a great time, I'm buzzing like a fly in an outhouse, and I don't have a hang over and I don't toss my lunch. And that's the point. You want to have fun. Right? Why hurt yourself?

It just seems like a really really good idea to drink more at the time. And you're correct about the source of hangovers and vomiting. Alcohol + water is a good idea.

I like how that publication summarizes the article by printing the leading 2 paragraphs before the body of the article. That way, I can read those first, and decide whether or not to read the rest of the article.

As a recovering alcoholic in AA, I think a pill that treats alcoholism would be a great benefit to the many who can't stop and who are destroying their lives and the lives of those around them.

But then again, there's those that give up alcohol and are still destroying the lives of those around them. Like George Bush, for instance.

If you take a drug that inhibits the neurotransmitter GABA, then alcohol will have no effect on you.

The constant mentioning of BK in the article reminded me of an inside joke I have with friends. Our buddy always goes to BK
when he's drunk (or loudly demands it). It's made funnier by the fact that alot of other people head to BK when (and often only when) they're tanked...

Im with enave, first it was clinton bashing now its bush bashing. Hmm bush bashing? Now on topic.

As far a hangovers go I wonder if the dehydration is caused by the leaking potassion ions. If this leakage could be shut off, would one need to drink copious amounts of water, right?

And why didn't the alcohol resistant C elegans throw up so to speak?

If there is a "no DUI" pill/shot/drink, what happens when you get pulled over?

Yeah officer, I know I smell like a farking brewery, but see I took this pill.

Additionally this study shows that an arbitrary illegal BAC is not an good determination of intoxication. What about people who are simply alcohol resistant, why should they be judged by the metabolic middle?

What about some one under the legal BAC limit, can they get off scott free even though they are farking drunk?

2003-12-11 06:45:40 PM
I wonder what the lag time on this pill is. It would be cool if you could get totally hammered, and then all of a sudden need to sober up. Take the neurotransmitter pill, and BAM! You're sober.
I bet that would feel weird.

I wonder though, does alcohol only affect your brain? When people die of alcohol poisoning, what is it that kills them? It doesn't seem like the neurotransmitter pill would stop that.

I wish someone had given me one of these sober-up pills at my company's holiday party this weekend, preferably BEFORE I:
- Kissed a coworker
- Tried to handle large money transactions (charity donations) while staggeringly drunk (couldn't make correct change)
- Yelled at one or more VPs
- Did something (still not sure what) that made one or more coworkers think I'm a lesbian
- Drunkenly bearhugged my boss
- Lit my glove on fire with a cigar (I don't smoke cigars, so this one is quite the mystery)

For the record, my intention was NOT to get drunk. I think I went from zero to drunk somewhere around drink #5, which normally means "tipsy" or "enjoying myself but behaving".
