Nobodyn0se: People who create accounts specifically for the purpose of arguing a point they don't actually believe in for the purpose of pissing people off. People who "threadshiat." People who make the same completely ridiculous arguments time and time again after having been conclusively proven that they are factually incorrect (and I do NOT mean opinions here, I mean factually incorrect. I also don't mean once or twice, I mean time after time).

Some of these people have been outed, so don't try and pretend that people like this don't exist.

No, I've seen these outings.  I've yet to see a correct one though. People do get excited about them.

Fark does not require that people acknowledge that they are wrong.  Fark does not require that people respond to you if they don't want to.  Fark would actually prefer if more ridiculousness could be inserted into the process because it's supposed to be about the laughs.  Fark does not require that you avoid arguments if other members don't like them so long as they're on topic.

James!: sprawl15: The only one ever caught was the sneakily named sprawl15's troll alt.

That was so lame it doesn't even count.  How easy would you say it was to switch between then two in a fast moving thread?

Extremely. Though, I went out of my way to not sock puppet proper on it, by trying to never comment on the same conversation with both accounts. The easiest thing to do would be to untick the 'remember me' box and have your computer not autocomplete for you. Then you're forced to check your login every post.

James!: How are you defining troll, by the way?

The definition I've had from the mod staff of 'troll' is basically 'asshole'. If you insult people, you can be banned for trolling. The definition I use for troll, though, is someone who intentionally posts inflammatory shiat for the sole purpose of riling up a reaction. I am nearly always an asshole, but only sometimes trolly.

The problem that a lot of people have is that a discussion is supposed to be a discussion. In an Israel thread, people talk about Israel. If Poster A has the opinion that Israel are a bunch of zionist scumbag baby killers and they simply post stuff to that extent over and over again (especially when it's been disproved in many, many threads), they simply aren't contributing to the discussion at that point. That's not really trolling and not really being an asshole, and they may very well be honest in their opinions, but it's more destructive to any chance for discussion than one person popping in and posting a line of blatant racism, or a person jumping in and saying "but what about BENGHAZI???".

And it's gotten far, far worse over the last few years, since that's an 'in' for being disruptive. And, from the end user perspective, I don't really care if the disruptive activity is honest opinion or paid troll, I just care that it's disruptive.

GAT_00: Rev.K: I'm guessing they do exist on Fark. I can't think of anything else to explain the long list of known threadsh*tters who show up in every single thread about a particular topic.

I don't think that's the proof so much as they last a couple months, and then disappear to be replaced with an entirely new login created 4 days previously saying the exact same things.

There are a few handles that seemed to be on every politics thread since the begining og the year, usually on the right, who seem to have completely vanished almost immediately after Nov   6th as well.  At first I assumed they were just licking their wounds but  two months later, isn't a sign of 'em, so I figure they got their walking papers about the same time Team Romney turned off the staff credit cards

long-ass thread and I'm not reading all of it, but if you hunt around the internet on the few 'legitimate' work from home/online piece work sites you can find jobs like this. The seedy run-down business front doesn't seem likely, though. You can also see dozens of guys offering teams of Indians cracking X number of captcha's per hour (with X being an insanely high number) to post spam through robo-filters for what amounts to less than minimum wage in the US. For the whole team. If you're lucky out of all the entries you find one actually legitimate data entry or audio job.

imontheinternet: you are a puppet: Story itself sounds fake as shiat, obviously there are plenty of astroturfers on this and every similar large site, but I'm sure they aren't recruited like secret agents.

Definitely fake.  I'm not saying there aren't public relations firms who pay people to post viral marketing sh*t on the internet, but the idea that they operate like some sort of terrorist cell is just stupid.

I didn't realize that this was just an excerpt; after reading the whole article this thing is definitely madeup. I mean this paragraph is ridiculous:

At phase 4 I was promoted to "Astroturf Ranger" and sent to CTU headquarters to receive my black ops training in enhanced trolling technique. I walked into the small Shaolin dojo that was to become my home for the next 6 months, and almost instantly my spider sense began to tingle. As I scanned the room for danger I immediately became transfixed on another set of eyes staring back at me. I was almost paralyzed as she began to walk over to me. I don't have to tell you she was a stunner. 5'9, chest looked to be about 36C, legs from here to yaya. Long brown hair down to my waist. I smiled at her with savoir faire and extended a hand. She smiled back, shook my hand and introduced herself as "Maria" (not her real name that she introduced herself as, and which later proved to be an alias). She asked me my name. I lowered my sunglasses and rolled the toothpick to the other side of my mouth. "Bond", I said. "Master Chief Bond, D.D.S.". She blushed and tossed her hair back, and I was immediately overwhelmed. The way she stared at the ground it wasn't hard to tell...she didn't know. She didn't know she was beautiful.

Thread jacking and personal attacks will get a person sent to the cornfield for a while much more frequently than trolling.  For me, if someone calls you a retard that's just a personal attack but if they follow you from thread to thread calling you a retard and bringing up something from a thread two weeks ago that's trolling.  If we started booting people for having shiatty opinions we'd be empty in a week.

After walking down a long, filthy linoleum-covered corridor lit by dimly-flickering halogen, I came to the entrance of the office itself: a crudely battered metal door with a sign that said "United Amalgamated Industries, Inc."

...and I stopped reading there - clearly made-up bullshiat.

So, is this the acceptable business attire for professional internet trolling?.

hey, that's how I surf the internets every gotdamn day!  well, that and i'm not wearing any pants.

We need to get you a job Weave.

tell me about it.  I posted a bunch of applications this week alone.  meh...we shall see if any of the hits I got prior to the holidays turn into a job offer.

What are you looking to do?

IT stuff.  system admin, mainframe operator/programmer.  scheduler.  hell, anything at this point, i'm not picky.  just as long as it's day shift and NOT weekends as a standard shift.

What city?

anywhere in central pennsylvania, virginia, annapolis md.  or colorado for that matter.  i'm willing to pack it up and move outta this state.  Pennsylvania is getting weirder and more Santorum.

Ah, got some openings in Houston, TX. But, unless you already live there, I wouldn't recommend relocating. Ever.

Mikey1969: I kind of wonder if the deniers here are the Fark shills... We should start a list. Everyone who claims that this is all made up sounds to me like they are trying to defend their own jobs.

This is all made up. Or maybe I'm just saying that to throw you off.

*cue dramatic music*

The plot thickens!
