Nobody in this thread is saying that. People are saying that there are some organizations that probably pay people to make posts on the internet. You're dismissing it as either a "conspiracy theory" or as a way of classifying everyone who has a different opinion.

Then I went on to describe yet another conspiracy theory I see a lot.

For what it's worth, I see your argument and I agree that there are probably campaigns who make sure their social media people spend time on the more highly trafficked forums and we definitely can't guarantee that they never use Fark. I think what gets irksome is the implication that we're in on it, or that Fark aids and abets that.

We have to assume all posters are arguing in good faith and we can't try to guess at a user's intentions for the most part. That would get really subjective really  fast.

Why would anyone choose to mod or admin a site like this for free? And why would should anyone believe this person when they are clearly trying to dismiss anything this article is implying? This shiat happens everyday and it will be probably be worse next year.

Oh I think it goes on quite a bit.  its just that the people doing it have gotten better with their technique.  they know the mods and admins have better things to do than track down nearly impossible to prove rumors of playing sock puppet on the politics tab (or elsewhere, although why you'd sock puppet the entertainment tab is beyond me).  unless someone is blatantly stupid, they're going to get away with it.

I know of one whom I have Farky'd "DC Lobbyist". He doesn't hide this fact, though. His Fark name is actually his real name, and he has a website also in his name. He only comments in here on the weeks leading up to an election, and calmly pushes hard right conservative talking points.

I find that people that want attention (negative or otherwise)  encourage such talk.  It makes them feel important.

I really don't care whether Mods block the trolls or not, since I generally ignore them anyway, and I understand why you'd have to assume that people are arguing in good faith. I just think it is ridiculous that James is like vehemently denying that anyone has ever been paid to post comments online. Is it some kind of defense mechanism as a Moderator?

James!: I_C_Weener: James!: HAHAHAAH green? Oh fark.

The paid shill proponents have gotten to the Admins! Why is Fark hiding this? It must be true or Fark would not have silenced opinion and buried the thread!

That said, there are plenty of businesses who get hired to pump up products on the Internet. This is the same. I'm sure that there are people paid to promote stuff on Pinterest, Facebook and other places.

But James! Is right. People on the pol tab here just want to fight. They do it for free or pay to do it.

But I do really think that Coke Zero is superior to that socialist Diet Pepsi crap!!!! And I think Lincoln would have condemned Apple for slave labor. Buy Lenovo!

nah, obamacare is only unpopular with GOP shills.  everyone else is ok with it.  which doesn't invalidate your main point that once ACA legislation goes live we're going to see a LOT of paid shills show up and act like whiny biatches about health care reform.

If it could be conclusively proven that there are no paid political shills here, i would be stunned.
Given the nature of the internet and this site, a shill could afford to be more subtle in the steering of conversations. Just throw a breadcrumb out, and watch the trolls jump all over themselves trying to out derp each other.
So the shills, assuming their existence, probably fly below most peoples' radar.

But here's the thing: If a paid shill got me to change my mind, good! Great! If you can get me to change my opinion, it doesn't matter if you're paid or volunteer.

I don't see much difference between some guy knocking on my door and convincing me to vote for X candidate, and someone convincing me to vote for X on the internet.
