Wook: padraig: Am I the only one who thinks that Greece is going back to being a far-right brutal dictatorship?

LOL - Dude, Greece is hard left. Sometimes facts do get in the way of a moistened political vagina.

fark you, dude. And "Golden dawn" encroaching more and more aspects of life over there, and being extremely popular with the police, doesn't make you think that maybe, in a few years, something really bad could happen ?

Not surprising that Greece is getting racist and reactionary in their treatments. This is a country that voted a far-right Neo-Nazi party into Parliament in the last elections. A Neo-Nazi party complete with black-shirted thugs who would target non-Caucasians and beat them.

Actually doesn't take many actions like this to have a very bad impact on tourism. Some years back, Jamaica had several similar incidents of tourists beaten by both locals and police. Enough people stopped going for enough time to kill many smaller businesses. Saint Croix had the same thing happen in the '70s. Tourism returned, but many small businesses were killed off before it did.

Hey Rex, just wanted to ask if they had the Smithsonian Channel where you live. Great channel, basically it is like how the history channel used to be. (You know, before someone decided that reality tv should replace documentaries where you actually learn something.)

In times of economic struggle, the fascists crawl out of the woodwork. There have been videos of Golden Dawn beating and killing brown and/or gay people on youtube for 6 months. One right in front of a cop who pretends he doesn't notice. Then there's the MP who beat a female MP on live TV.

LemSkroob: RanDomino: For added irony, Greece is a nation of immigrants. After it was depopulated by plague and invaders, the Byzantines resettled it with Slavs on the condition that they take Greek names and learn Greek.

not to mention greece and the slavic nations were the 'dumping grounds' for returning roman armies coming back from Africa and the middle east. Its where they left the sick/wounded/unhinged/criminal/unfit-for-society' before hopping into the boats to cross the Adriatic back to the Italian Peninsula.

Not exactly the 'best & brightest' to get your nation started.

Idiocracy in action, if you will. Speaking of "Idiocrates" sounds like a good fark-handle.

A Caucasian is not something I would like to be if visiting Greece. Far better to be European, or at least a "white" American. We're usually tourists; Caucasians are somewhat seen as either poor migrant workers (the kind of people the Golden Dawn doesn't really like) or terrorists (Chechens).

Oh, shiat, you're talking about that pseudo-science Bible shiat Americans do when they pretend they're Caucasians. My bad. Carry on.

It's now the norm in Southern Europe. all those decades of corruption at all levels of society have finally screwed your economy ? blame the foreigners ! A foreigner being anyone who doesn't look like you or speaks with an accent.

Twenty years ago, Italians (mostly southern Italians)* and Greeks criticized racism in the US claiming "they" were not like that. Today, of course, they are showing themselves to be deeply and pervasively racist societies. Of course, they claim they are not racially motivated... ultimately, though, they prefer to blame all their woes on easily identified "extra-communitarians" because the alternative would be to blame themselves and their parents and grandparents and they haven't got the intellectual honestly to do that.

*Historically, Northern Italians have always had Southern Italians to discriminate against. They still do.

The Chinese are one of the fastest-growing sources of tourism dollars these days, so there's that.

This.
Greece has frequently been voted China's #1 tourist destination.
Half a million east asians visit Greece each year.

Yeah. But this dude was Korean.

People from China most likely think that they're completely different than Koreans, and that Greek racist cops just doesn't see them all as Asians.

It might collapse for other reasons, which will indeed suck for Greece.

But not for this, white Europeans don't mind going to Greece and feeling like the master race.

Personally I don't get why anyone would go to Greece. You can go to North Africa, Turkey or the middle-east if you're going in that direction and like nice weather, where having Euros makes you king.

Too bad today's "Greeks" ain't the same Greeks as in Socrates' day: three or four times during the Byzantine years mainland Greece was severely depopulated by war, famine, plague and running away from the other three, so to keep food growing and taxes paid the Imperial Court moved in gobs of Slavs, Goths and yes TURKS. The latter is where they got to be "swarthy": in Socrates' day most Greeks were fair-skinned and even blond. Calling today's inhabitants Greeks is like calling everybody in upstate NY Iroquois, with the difference that at least in Greece the immigrants learned the native language.

But don't tell a "Greek" with a gun he's really mostly Turkish.

For millions of people, traveling outside of the suburbs in any direction is an impressive feat.  Good luck getting them from behind the walls of the Sandals resort.

For a country whose economy is on the insanity workout of becoming the biggest shiathole in Europe and with a demographic of 94% Greek ethnicity out of 11 million people, they're calculations is that 6% non-Caucasians is the problem?

Just out of curiosity, I took a look at the State Department's writeup on Greece:

THREATS TO SAFETY AND SECURITY

Domestic anarchist organizations such as Revolutionary Struggle (RS), Sect of Revolutionaries, and the Conspiracy of Fire Nuclei (CFN) are Greece's most active terrorist groups, striking both domestic and foreign targets in Greece....

Strikes and demonstrations are a regular occurrence....

Riot-control procedures often include the use of tear gas....

Ah, here it is:

There has been a rise in unprovoked harassment and violent attacks against persons who, because of their complexion, are perceived to be foreign migrants. U.S. citizens most at risk are those of African, Asian, Hispanic, or Middle Eastern descent. Travelers are urged to exercise caution, especially in the immediate vicinity of Omonia Square from sunset to sunrise. Travelers should avoid Exarchia Square and its immediate vicinity at all times. The U.S. Embassy has confirmed reports of U.S. African-American citizens detained by police authorities conducting sweeps for illegal immigrants in Athens.

But it doesn't look like Greece landed on their "Travel Warnings" page yet. Frankly, with all the violence they talked about, plus harassment and potential arrest by police, I don't see how Greece is that much better than, let's say, Tunisia.

No but the lose of non-white tourism, and the loss of white tourism of people who don't want to support policies like this sure will.

My cousin studied abroad there 4 years ago and had no problem being half black. Wonder if he lucked otu or if this is just getting more common.
