Al Gore is so concerned about global warming, he sold Current TV to the Emir of Qatar.

Al Jazeera, which was launched in 1996, is headquartered in Doha, Qatar and is funded by the Qatari government - more specifically, the Emir of Qatar, Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani. Possibly the most surprising part of the whole ordeal, however, is the fact that Qatar is one of the world's largest exporters of oil, and is the largest exporter of liquefied natural gas.

Al Jazeera is just about the closest thing the Arab world has to a free press not to mention their exemplary coverage of the region compared to anything we have in the US, especially with the decline of international news bureaus.  While Qatar isn't "free" by any means, it's decades ahead of Saudi Arabia.  But yes, they drill oil there too.

I was going to say hourly, but it depends how much the modmin gets paid. I'm thinking there's a paypal site somewhere, where you donate X amount to have your headlines posted about Global Warming on Fark.

//hint hint Fark. Enough already. You've milked the f*cking cliched meme articles to death already. Move on.

They're also one of the largest investors/supporters/manufacturers of solar power in the Middle East. Link

I'm glad you do, because anyone with more than 3 brain cells knows it's a shell game and scam of the highest order. This puts you roughly between "TSA Agents" and "anyone who describes themselves as a banker/investor" in the queue to be summarily executed by the mob.

Al Gore made himself richer than Mitt Romney by selling out to one of the biggest foreign oil producers in the world, probably leading to the loss of American jobs (TWC cut Current TV from their lineup after the sale was complete). Don't forget he initially got rich off of tobacco. In Congress, he opposed federal funding of abortion, supported prayer in schools (moment of silence as he called it), voted against a ban on the interstate sale of guns, and was one of 10 Democrats who supported Desert Storm.

Al Gore is a closet Republican.

He was also one of the two sponsors on a bill to gut the Endangered Species Act in order to save a dam-building project in his state after it was discovered the location was the habitat of a once thought extinct species of fish.

Al Gore is also not mentioned in the linked article, which is about a report from NOAA/NCDC, which does not employ Al Gore.

If you want to read the original report, it's here. Disclaimer: Report does not mention Al Gore.

People quoted in the article, and their affiliations:
Jake Crouch, NOAA National Climatic Data Center, Not Al Gore
Michel Jarraud, World Meteorological Organization Secretary-General, Not Al Gore

We may be able to come up with a script or app for the far right that scans articles and identifies people, places, and things as "Al Gore" or "Not Al Gore", but I don't think they'd use it. Needing a political boogeyman is too ingrained. (The political boogeyman is Al Gore.)

What's funny is, for every 1 Al Gore they demonize, there are 5 non-scientists they idolize for "telling the truth". Hell, Lord Monckton alone is enough to show the hypocrisy of the deniers (a politician going around telling audiences willing to pay about climate change), but then they've got this Watts guy, the Daily Fail, even Penn and farking Teller, two guys who they would normally demonize for their views on magical skepticism.

Global != local.

It could be 30 degrees colder every single day of the year where you are, that doesn't mean global temperatures have gone down.

Yeah that episode of their show was a real letdown. It immediately dived down the familiar alleys that deniers take when they want to complain but don't know what they are complaining about. It was supposed to be about climate change, but then for a while in the middle it was about how college student activists are dumb, and then they talked to Bjorn Lomborg as if he were a credible source of information. I think they talked to a Cato Institute shill too.

Just a total failure on their part.

chuckufarlie: 1. warmest in the USA does not equate to warmest globally

The USA is not fully representative of the global trend, but it's also not terribly different from it:

www.ncdc.noaa.gov

As you'd expect from arbitrarily sub-sampling a larger data set, the trend is similar but the noise is larger.

2, Since most of the current weather stations were actually installed in the 1980s, it would be more accurate to say that it is the warmest since the 1980s.

This doesn't follow. If we installed ten times as many stations next year, we'd get the same average with better spatial resolution. Records from decades ago don't become invalid because they are fewer in number.

It is almost as if Penn and Teller's primary career skill is eliciting a reaction from an audience. But I won't rest until we've heard what David Copperfield thinks about string theory.

Dear Deniers,

Climate change is real and it is happening. A lot of bad things are going to likely transpire as a result.

Preparedness is extremely important in all things, and you need to be prepared for the moment when denial of the facts is too difficult for all but the most mentally ill among you. Please begin to prepare your "This is God's punishment because of" argument. Remember to include:

It was a bit of a departure for the show. They usually went after new-age buffoonery and attacked it directly. In the climate change episode, they didn't even discuss the science, and just skirted around the edges of some of the goofy things college kids had to say about it (and other unrelated things), before handing the mic to Lomborg and Cato.

Why do you hate capitalism so much?

I know... I know... He makes a convenient punching bag for deniers. Nevermind the fact that he plows the proceeds from his environmental work back into doing environmental work *specifically so the deniers don't have that to whine about.*

I'm sure that the same people are concerned that Bono is wealthy and use this as evidence that world hunger and poverty are scams.

Wait. We not only have to address things Al Gore did or said because NOAA/NCDC released an annual report, but we have to address things that are only in your mind about what Al Gore did or said?

I think that's Level 2 Al Gore Derangement Syndrome. (Level 3 involves the fact that Al Gore has gotten fat.)

I don't hate capitalism, in fact I love capitalism. Man has caused the climate to change. Bono's a nice guy, but Bill Gates has done more and doesn't make such a big deal about it. I can't stand Al Gore and couldn't walk away from an opportunity to bash him.

Our brand of capitalism is the very reason we can't escape climate change. It's deeply flawed, and to sum it up in a word, crappy.

Oh and it's pretty easy to do more when you have billions to play with.
