dittybopper: Bendal: As long as the remake of Godzilla isn't that he was some oversized gecko and I may watch it. That Americanized remake was the dumbest monster movie I've seen, ever.

/it wasn't Godzilla no matter what they called it

What if, instead of calling it "Godzilla", they had made essentially the same movie, with essentially the same monster, just tweaking it so that there aren't any visual or other reminders of Gojira. Maybe they call it "Trexodon" or something.

Would you like the film then?

It's my contention that most Godzilla fans (of which I am one) don't like the 1998 version because they grew up on the rubber suit version, and the 1998 version changed the look too much.

Personally, I think it's a better film than all but a handful of the Japanese made films, but the original is obviously superior to it.

Objectively, on it's own merits, it's actually a fairly decent monster movie.

U hated the Tri-Star Godzilla movie not because of Zilla himself, who is a cool design and interesting monster, but because of the rest of the film. The characters were annoying, showing the military as incompetent morons was grating, the baby Zillas were in there for the sake of a bad "Jurassic Park" ripoff, and the attempts at humor were painful.

Unless it's badly dubbed english over a Jap original, it's not a Gojira flick. This will fail. Some one set them up the bomb.

So are they in almost all Japanese Godzilla films.

showing the military as incompetent morons was grating,

I didn't see it that way, and I come from a long military family, and I was in the Army. What I saw was a force using weapons designed for a *COMPLETELY* different sort of opponent struggling to find ways to deal with an unprecedented situation.

In fact, I can only think of one "incompetent" military person in that film, and he wasn't so much incompetent but seemingly overwhelmed by events.

the baby Zillas were in there for the sake of a bad "Jurassic Park" ripoff,

Actually, I thought that was a pretty clever twist, and I wouldn't call it a Jurassic Park ripoff. Certainly, it's miles better than Godzooky/Minilla.

and the attempts at humor were painful.

Some were, yeah, especially the Mayor Ebert and his assistant Gene thing. Some worked fairly well though. Like when newscaster Charles Caiman* mispronounces "Gojira" as "Godzilla", and Audrey screams at the TV "It's GOJIRA you moron!". Or the running gag about how bad American coffee is.

I'm not saying that Emmerich's film is a work of art to be put up on a pedestal and admired, I'm saying that for what it was, a giant monster movie (I hate to use the word 'kaiju', because it's not Japanese), it worked pretty damn well. I can find a bunch of faults with it, among them that the helicopters don't have to fly around the buildings, they could just fly over them, and that the Hudson river is too shallow for submarines to operate like that, and numerous other little things, but Jesus H. Christ, it's a friggin' popcorn movie, and a fairly well made one at that.

The monster's origin is explained well within the context of the film. The design is unique but pays homage to the original. It's not some super-natural force that can't be killed, but a mortal animal. How it lives is shown (it eats fish, and it reproduces through a well known process among some monitor lizards), and in the end it's killed by the very same military you called incompetent.

Godzilla: Final Wars [2004] bomb

OK, I'm going to bold every Godzilla movie I've seen that is better than or roughly as good as the American film. I'm highlight in red the films that I've seen that I think are inferior to the American film.  Those that are neither bolded nor red I can't offer an opinion on because I have not seen them.

BTW, if you want to see kaiju done *RIGHT*, check out the 3 Heisei series Gamera films, especially the last one.

I farked up and didn't close the tag. It should look like above, though based on the ratings, I'm probably on safe ground there.

Again, the 1998 film isn't as good as the original, but it's better than the majority of the Japanese films, simply because they've cranked out a *LOT* of bad Godzilla films, and I've been a Godzilla fan since I first saw Godzilla vs. Megalon in the theaters as a 6 or 7 year old.

In "Godzilla Final Wars" there's a battle between Godzilla and what is obviously the American Matthew Broderick Godzilla. Godzilla takes out the pretender in 13 seconds. It was awesome.

The best part of the American Godzilla film?

"Where did you find this guy?"

"He's from France."

Too bad it set the tone for ALL the monster battles until Godzilla faced Monster X. Yay, monster battles that last a grand total of 10 seconds each with a curb-stomp victory for Godzilla every time, can't let the monsters get in the way of all that Matrix ripoff bullshiat. And instead of the petty NYAH NYAH attitude, they could have used Zilla Jr from the cartoon (who is very liked and respected by fans and Toho) and made it a kick-ass battle scene.

Funny thing is, Zilla got more relevance and screen time than several of Toho's veterans: Hedorah, Kumonga, Kamacuras, King Caesar.
