Nah, it has to be King Caesar. Seriously, though, if they are going to have two creatures from the preexisting films, they will probably take two of the most popular and easily recognizable ones, Mothra, Ghidorah, Gigan, or Kiryu.

Why, because it will have more than one monster? And perhaps the monsters fighting each other?

Throw in a battle royale with Transformers and GI Joe guys and the entire cast of the Expendables, all fighting for survival during a zombie outbreak, and it will probably pull in a billion at the box office.

But it will still suck.

Why remake it? They reached perfection with the Matthew Broderick version.

Rodan doesn't really have much going for him. Big flying bird. They made him a bit jazzier in the godawful Final Wars, but he's not really on the same level as Godzilla.

Well worth looking into for fans of kaiju or gratuitous destruction of property. Each issue is set in a different decade of the late 20th century. My favorite is the second, which takes place in Vietnam during the war.

From briefly perusing reviews, it appears that the series casts Godzilla as a metaphor for war, similar to the original treatment of Godzilla as a metaphor for the vast and mysterious threat of nuclear power. Interesting.

That exact line happens this issue.

They're making the same mistake all of the other films make. "Lead human character."

They don't put monsters in people movies. Why put people in monster movies? Does anyone see these for the 'lead human character'? NO, we want to watch cities crushed under the feet of a ridiculous, but cool abomination of scale and substandard special effect. We want to watch destruction, mayhem, and spectacle. Lead character romance--there are plenty of movies that deliver on that, this is not why we tune into kaiju.

I am not a man of discriminating tastes. Sounds fun.

-Mecha Godzilla
-Gigan

I actually never liked that much Rodan, Anguirius or Mothra... They are cool, but those on the list are the best, in my opinion.

Also, I haven't seen it yet, but I liked the design of the Cosmic/Space Godzilla...

When I was a kid, we had Godzilla vs. Megalon on VHS for some reason. I watched it all the time, and it utterly confused me at that age when I didn't really understand Japanese films and dubbed over translations and 50s weirdness. I just liked the giant lizard suit fighting the giant robot.

Still watch he MST3K version from time to time. I love Godzilla as an icon and the camp of the old movies, but can't say I'd be too interested in an edgy modern Godzilla like 2000 tried to be. Cloverfield reminded me a little of that, and while it had its moments it was hardly charming like Godzilla is.

Pacific Rim could be neat though, if only for eye candy.

Correction: Godzilla vs. Megalon was 1973. And the giant robot was "Jet Jaguar", not Megalon according to Wiki. Clearly I never grasped the intricacies of the plot.

As silly as most of the Godzilla films ended up being, the original (not the Americanized version), was actually a pretty solid film.

IIRC, When Toho sold the rights to Godzilla, it specifically said that Motha and Ghiroah were off limits, but all else is allowed.

And Gamera is a different film company, they'd need separate rights (bout wouldn't that be sweet to see them face off)

You probably had MEGALON because it had fallen into the public domain and was incredibly easy to find.

However, MEGALON is also considered by many to be among the worst of the Godzilla films. The best of them have a good science-fiction story to them, with great visuals and music, and were never played for camp. Yes, you have to allow that these are guys in suits, but each suit actor took their role very seriously and tried giving their monster different characters. The best are definitely worth checking out if you have any interest in older sic-fi/action films.

In addition to Megalon I've seen the original Godzilla, Gamera, Mothra vs Godzill, Mechagodzilla and Frankenstein Conquers the World, which is a sort of Godzilla-esque movie but also extremely bad. I have Ghidorah but haven't gotten around to watching yet. What are the other highlights?

See the Criterion version of the original Godzilla if you can. The American release had most of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki references removed. It is a much better film.

I liked Gigan quite a bit; for a kid-oriented adventure, I do remember a rather excessive amount of blood when Gigan tummy blade split open Godzilla. Also, just for the sheer weirdness, Godzilla versus Hedorah (the Smog Monster), Godzilla versus Ebirah (a big lobster), and Godzilla versus Biollante (a big rose) were all pretty fun.

Emmerich's Godzilla was no where as good as the cheesy Godzillias of the past but it was a fun movie. The scenes with the blond chick were painful as hell but broderick and dunn were pretty good and Jean Reno did his best with what he had.

Any film with Mechagodzilla is worth watching. There are 4 of these, and two of them are from separate franchise reboots. This franchise has been rebooted many times.

What if, instead of calling it "Godzilla", they had made essentially the same movie, with essentially the same monster, just tweaking it so that there aren't any visual or other reminders of Gojira. Maybe they call it "Trexodon" or something.

It's my contention that most Godzilla fans (of which I am one) don't like the 1998 version because they grew up on the rubber suit version, and the 1998 version changed the look too much.

Personally, I think it's a better film than all but a handful of the Japanese made films, but the original is obviously superior to it.

Objectively, on it's own merits, it's actually a fairly decent monster movie.

No, a different name would not have altered the fact that the film has numerous, intrinsic problems which are completely independent from a comparison with GODZILLA. However, I'm sure if I were to mention any of them even in that light, I'd either be called a film snob, or that I just don't know how to enjoy a dumb popcorn flick (I don't happen to like 'Independence Day' either).
