my 60yo mom was the 13th of 13 kids her mother had. she never knew any of them growing up. never seen them and didn't even know there were 12 others until much later in life.

about 20 years ago she started looking for them and found all of them i think. and it was a pretty complicated process. like bankers boxes full of paperwork she had collected and pages and pages of notes. some of them had died already since they were like basically twice her age then (late-70s / 80s when she was 40-ish).

maybe 10 years ago she found one that was most assuredly an actual full sibling living in seattle. it was kind of weird having all these "new" aunts and uncles so me and my brother never talked to them or visited when doing roadtrips. that was probably a mistake on our part.

IIRC the actual brother was someone she vaguely knew as a child too. just not as her brother. something weird like that.

i forget the entire backstory as to why she never knew of any of them... but both her parents were born in the 19th century and they were *both* in their 50s when she was born. somehow.

My stock photographer friends once sold a picture of the Empire State Building to a New York ad agency for $8,000. Their offices were just down 5th Avenue. They could have bought a kick-ass camera and taken an identical shot and then kept the camera.

I'm sick of my parent endlessly speculating about who was in this movie or what is the capital of Iceland or whatever. It's this endless loop that goes nowhere (solo or two competing answers) because the thought is repeated without new information or efforts to look up the answer. Alcoholism and Alzheimer's is ugly.

You two are forgetting something. If the answer to every question is available instantly then what the hell do you talk about while you're sitting at a bar getting drunk and/or being old? After a while everybody you've ever met for more than 5 seconds has heard all of your cool stories and jokes, and knows all your lies and opinions. All that's left is arguing over the vagaries that nobody remembers for sure or somebody misremembers.

I guess you could go to a new bar and meet new people. But...nah. It's generally more comfortable to argue bullshiat with the people you already know. Just get rid of Google and smartphones. For the sake of conversation!
