For over 40 years now, I have been the mutherfarking top hat. Everybody else grabs for the flashy racecar and the cute little dog, while I just casually pick up my spiffy hat.

An hour into the game, everybody else is jealous of my class and panache. I even move it slowly from square to square, like a gentleman squiring about town.

I'm actually pretty good at that Monopoly thing. My wife? Not so much. We played for a while, every night for two weeks. I beat her 13 times in a row. She won game 14. That was six years ago. We haven't played since.

Pewter casting is a time-honored tradition and certain types of tabletop-gaming enthusiast will tell you all about it if you so much as hint that you're interested.

As such, I made a few additional pieces for the family Monopoly set, simply because we have so many players on holidays, and my one cousin, the game expert, is designing a huge, eight-sided board that folds out onto a round table with six new colors, four new railroads, a second Jail, a second Go (necessary to maintain gameplay,) a lazy susan so the board rotates and a money tray on a TV stand for the banker. I'm also working on molds to cast the houses and hotels in pewter, so they're more substantial, and will either electroplate them in copper and chrome respectively (I know a guy who works at a chrome plant,) or hand-paint them the traditional red and green with little windows and stuff with Testor's enamel and then spray-seal them for maximum durability.

We've been working on it since Christmas and hope to have it ready in time for Grandma's ninetieth birthday, as Monopoly is her favorite game and she loves it so. Husband and I built the table and banker's tray (it even has a printing calculator built-in, because Grandma's House Rules mean a non-playing little kid is chosen to be banker and some of the kids are still iffy on math,) my cousin and her husband have been having us over to painstakingly hand-paint the board every weekend (we'll seal it with clear-coat once it's done,) and the whole thing is about half finished. The hardest parts were working out the expansion without affecting play (luckily cousin is a serious board-games expert,) and finding authentic names for the new streets, landmarks and railroads. We actually called a third cousin in Atlantic City to accomplish this.

And yes, in our family Monopoly is Serious Business. Every child gets a set for their thirteenth birthday, and on holidays we have the kid's version at the 'little kids' table, the regular version at the regular kids' table (ages eight to thirteen,) and a big adults-only game that has been known to last well into the night. Some years we have to have four adult-division boards going and tournament brackets to decide who plays on Christmas Day, but the new eight-sider board should enable many more players at a given time.

I have never once won a Christmas Day game in the adults' division, but since only Cousin, I, and our husbands have seen and play-tested the new Ninetieth Birthday board, I am cherishing vague hopes.

You should post picts of this when you're done. Sounds pretty, damn cool.

We have to confiscate the wheelbarrow from the new games before we can give the games to our inmates. If we let them have the wheelbarrows, they steal them and use them as screwdrivers for the security screws. They all know that if we catch them with one their ass is grass. They will get a charge of interfering with security proceedures. They do not want that charge.
