Finally.  The stores are generally poorly kept and the food is nasty.

Ruby Tuesday, Applebees, TGIFridays, and Outback Steakhouse are completely interchangeable in my mind, and all equally disgusting. They're the sort of places that make Olive Garden look high class.

The RT close to my office is notorious. It's not that the food is bad (well, by chain standards, it's not bad), but the kitchen is so damn slow during the lunch hour. I keep giving the servers empathy tips since they probably catch all the shiat for the kitchen's delays.

They are not closing Ruby Tuesday's.  The company that owns them is closing some of their other restaurants and only 24 out of the 768 existing Ruby Tuesday's.

Articles-they are there for a reason!

Oh well, hope springs eternal. Maybe next time it can be only 24 of 768 are staying open.

As they should. They took away a lot of good stuff and seriously downsized their portions. Ain't what it used to be.

The Ruby Tuesdays where I'm from are the closest thing to tolerable food in the casual dining chain restaurant category. Not that I want to go to casual dining chains, but since I have friends who like them, if I have to go to one, I'd rather do Ruby Tuesdays than the alternatives.

2013-01-10 06:14:17 AM
The rest of the chains can go with them.Last time we went to an RT it took us 45 minutes to get our salads, and that was with maybe 20 people in the place.

/Applebees can eat a nuke, they're worse

This is what happens when you take the Bison Bacon Cheeseburger off the menu... Still bitter, haven't been back since.

Why the fark would you go to Ruby Tuesday's and order a salad that's NOT from the salad bar?

Wow, I hate to think about the alternatives. Ruby Tuesday is even worse than Applebee's

People still eat at restaurants?

2013-01-10 07:15:56 AM
Maybe this means they can put the good stuff back on the salad bars at the locations staying open. The bar is the only reason to eat there, and they've managed to strip it down to the point that it's just an ordinary, lackluster bar.

2013-01-10 07:23:04 AM
The Ruby Tuesday's up here is okay. I've definitely been to worse. Probably helps that there's little else up here, I donno...

Coronach: learned interesting ways to cook in hotel rooms

George Foreman grill? I've always contemplated that but wondered if it would work.

I'm paranoid about the MSG (or yeast extract or autolyzed/hydrolyzed protein) in the foods to eat at most places on the road.

Last time I was on the road, I went with a few pounds of macadamia nuts, bunch of grilled chicken and huge containers of fruits. Still I ran out because the fruits like strawberries and cherries have really little calories for how much they weigh. I would take cheese and 85% dark chocolate but they would melt.

I suppose I could always take a stove that runs on propane cans and make soup.

Is there anything on the menu at Ruby Tuesday's that they are known for? All the other places seem to have one menu item that they push.

Also, the writing/lack of editing is atrocious.

Damn. I haven't been there in about 10 years (no locations in Texas where I now live), but I still miss that salad bar. Good to hear I don't have to miss it anymore.

When I did road work that is exactly what I used, make sure you hide it when maid service comes around though.

/Grilled chicken breast and steam in bag microwave veggies taste great after a week of eating Purina Traveling Technician Chow.

Went to Ruby Tuesday last night to meet the wife for some Happy Hour apps and drinks. Specials only apply if you sit AT the bar not everywhere in the bar area.

There were exactly 6 customers in the entire restaurant, us, another 2 top in the bar area and a 2 top in the regular seating area. Found out the deal with the specials after we ordered. Had our first round, paid, went to another local joint.

Seriously if you can't even do happy hour right, you are destined to fail.

Selling crap food at high prices has consequences. Who knew?

2013-01-10 09:03:06 AM
We've had good food at ours. The problem I do have is they are always changing their menus, removing food I like. (i.e. replacing my veggie burgers with a squash burger, what the hell?)

2013-01-10 09:04:58 AM
My wife likes to go to RT once in a great while. always thought the food was pretty "meh", but I do love the salad croutons. i'll have to start making those at home

2013-01-10 09:24:51 AM
I like it of all the chains - but I just get the salad bar and soup when I go. Not going to get the sophisticated bacon cheeseburger on a square plate.

As for you guys who are terrified to eat out when you travel - really? Can't just go to a Subway or something? Or order a salad?

Similar to the closest RT here too. The salad bar at least appears to be clean and they have Bass and Harpoon on tap. I'm not against chains as much as your average farker though.

The dressings all have MSG. The processed cheese has MSG. Any sauce has MSG.

Subway's health benefits are a marketing gimmick. The breads and meat are no different than any other fast food. All they have is a little bit of extra veggies.

What's wrong with MSG? Any supposed issues with MSG are purely anecdotal, there's no definitive link to any health problems, and has been used for more than 100 years.

Is this the thread where I boast about how sophisticated of a taste palette I have because I don't eat at chain restaurants?

/ Haven't been to an Applebees, Chilis, or Ruby Tuesday's for more than a year
// Still not totally unedible in a pinch
/// Only "chain" restaurant that I visit at least a few times a year is BWW -- it's not higher quality, but it's pretty cheap and I like the environment

When I go I usually get the salad bar, or maybe something with chicken. It's hard to fark up chicken.
Overall it's not worth the price though.

2) Yup, eat there once, once. By all that is holy NEVER AGAIN.

They used to have a good thing going.

Then they tried to up-scale their image and raise the prices. When they took down all the local sports memorabilia from local schools and started serving everything on odd-shaped plates me & the lunch crowd took our business elsewhere.

It wasn't the competition that put Ruby's in the toilet, it was bad decision making by their previous CEO.

MSG has never been proven harmful. The bread is bread - closer to wonderbread than hand crafted mountain bread from tibet but it's better than the shelf stable foam you get at most burger barns. The meats may be high in sodium but they are not heart stoppers like your regular double whopper. No fries either - and they are the real fat bomb. Failing that just get a veggie sub. You know, lettuce, spinach, onions cucumber green pepper, black olives, pepperoncinis yadda yadda have them put it all into a bowl and eat it as a salad. Have them put oil and vinegar on it if you are afraid of the other dressings.

I'm no huge Subway white knight but you can get a far healthier quick meal there on the road than at your typical burger and fries place.

Failing that stay in your room eating fruit and chocolate I guess. Good luck with your road poops!
