Amend the constitution to prohibit the metric system, said the man with the 9mm in his gun safe by the bed as he drank from his liter of cola before he took his 2 miligrams of Avepro.

Using only the Imperial measuring standards inherited from our forefathers, the US leads the world in science, engineering and industry.

did the Onion start this?

That's trolltastic.  While we're at it, let's change the name from Imperial to the Reagan Memorial Measurement System.

Man, that is some SERIOUS Poe's Law there...I'm still pretty sure it's a parody though.

Brilliant! It allow the US to keep up with all the other countries in the world that don't use the metric system...

Making everyday math easier and more approachable to those less keen to numerical computations would be welcome if math wasn't connected to science and therefore reality which is known to have a liberal bias. So no thank you please.

/why does the word 'math' trigger spell check?

I like it creeping in slowly the it does. Mixing the two systems my lead to lost spacecraft however. Yeah I'm looking at you NASA.

Make use of the metric system punishable by death, as it is mainly criminal drug-dealers who use it.

When working with overseas manufacturers, there is a lot of time, money and risk involved in converting everything. They laugh at us.

This petition is making me grow to nearly 10 barleycorns. I must get out my Brannock device to check.

Nope, not quite 10 barleycorns. Perhaps with a little 'encouragement'...

There. 10 barleycorns. Sounds quite impressive, doesn't it, ladies?

/It's 3 1/3 inches
//I mean, 10 barleycorns = 3 1/3 inches
///I personally am at almost 12

My favorite excuse (seriously) for not adopting it is golf courses and football fields wouldn't work anymore.

Wouldn't the logical conclusion be to allow isolated things like that to remain as they are?

If you can't figure out the metric system, you fail

I learned it in school in the 70's, in ALABAMA

Yes! I'm totally on board with this! The solution is not converting to the metric system of weights and measures, but of converting our number system to base 12. Ten is currently divisible by 1, 2, 5 and 10. In base 12 ten would be divisible by 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 10.

It was good enough for the Sumerians, it's good enough for me.

1) Outlaw metric system
2) US scientists no longer able to perform research, physicians can't prescribe any medicines or therapies since they're all metric
3) Jesus is our scientist!

Metric is fine, but I do like imperial units. They work well in a world where things are frequently measured in thirds and fourths. Let's just keep on using both. Works fine in other places, too.

2013-01-09 04:50:28 PM
Ah, too late. Our measures are already defined in metric.

We at least need to recalibrate the imperial system.  There's no way in hell that Queen Elizabeth's foot is an actual foot long.

Because math is not actually a word, but is just shorthand for mathematics?

/I have no idea, just takin' a guess
//Or perhaps the Spell Check is complaining because it was told there would be no math

I still dont understand why we did not make new speed limit signs as a make-work stimulus program a couple years ago, and put both the MPH and KPH speed limits on it. Start a gradual transition to the metric system.

as much as I'd like to believe there are people this stupid, I'm certain it's a joke. Probably started by subby's friend or something, considering it only has 8 signs and must have started recently.

Adopt everything but Celsius.

Grams, Liters and Meters, sure.

Celsius? No.

"It's 0C outside... kind of cold... But not really." and "It's 100C outside... I'm dead..."

vs

"It's 0F outside, it's really freaking cold." and "It's 100F outside, it's really freaking hot."

Fahrenheit is calibrated for a fairly normal range of human experience, where 0 and 100 are "You should be really paying attention" values. Celsius is calibrated for water freezing and boiling. Great for science, not for normal daily interaction.

Dollars are metric and the stock market used fractions up until the 90's.

Carleton College and St. Olaf College, each of Northfield, MN, played the first ever NCAA sanctioned football game on a 100-meter field. Even then, no onerreally cared.

Its antiquated confusing and cumbersome and thats the way i like it!!!!!!

Turkey switched from the arabic alphabet to the roman over the course of about 6 weeks. Contrary to what yhe window lickers would like you to believe, using metric would not be the death of the republic. That's what obamacare is for.

Christ almighty people are babies.

Because last time we started doing that, Ronald Reagan pulled the plug on it because 'Merika. So all the low information types and xenophobes always bleat "we already tried that and it didn't work" any time anyone so much as mentions it. It's not a fight any politician is willing to take. If it leads to the occasional loss of a 10 billion dollar satellite, or the gradual eroding of our technological position in the world, so be it. Politicians don't care about shiat like that, and certainly wouldn't risk the ire of the mouth breathers over it.
