Ghastly: Proof that military spending is out of control. Why would I pay $75K to be raped, sexually assaulted, beaten, stripped, and humiliated when I can get a crackwhore to do the same to me for $20.

Tell your mom hi.

McFnord: so 2 torture cases are equivalent to 1 case of copyright infringement

The image say "$80,000 per download." How many downloads? I think it was around 20.

So one might say, more like 44 torture cases are equivalent to 1 case of copyright infringement.

Meanwhile, Toyota agreed to pay $1 billion in fines and restitution for "sudden acceleration" incidents that didn't actually happen just to make the lawyers go away.

The plaintiffs have settled their lawsuit with the contractor, Engility Holdings.

Love how folks can't be bothered to read a whole two-paragraph article.

You're right, I DRTFA, but even so, who is really paying them? In the end, the taxpayers are the ones getting screwed.

WG, the $$ come out of the contractor's end, the taxpayers do not pay that.  The $$ number per victim is a settlement payment, not a damages award after trial which could have been much higher, or zero.  And yeah the law firm grabs its percentage.  It sounds like they earned it in this case, with a dispositive motion by the guard company appealed to the circuit court and defeated.  I guess these lawyers may be catching some flak from people who figure these private guards were the same as US soldiers, or that them terrorists shouldn't got no rights anyhow.

The contractor does not have the same kind of immunity from civil liability and can not hide behind claims of state secrecy as easily as an agency like DoD.  Lesson for the US: privatize prisons for accountability, to reduce abuse both by the bad apples, the actual bullies among the corrections officers, and by the good people who may lose their way, corrupted by power over others.  Let the plaintiffs' lawyers do the work of keeping the guards honest and the courts sanction the leeches for frivolous claims.

Something in there saying the lawyers get fees if they win would also be good, and throw in a night with <desirablemoviestar.mov> for me because I am dreaming here.

Well, yes, if faced with a decision to either do or not do a thing that is wholly novel (and in fact is in no way crucial to whatever it is you're doing), generally it's cheaper to not do that thing than it is to do it.

Who knew?

Are you not clear on the understanding of where government contractors paychecks come from? or are you not clear on the understanding of where the governments money comes from?

Other than the money that they create out of thin air of course. But even that has to be paid back with interest. And do you understand how that is done?

The answer is that is is all funded by the work of the taxpayers.

Somebody help me out here.  Is WG trolling me or just sincere and clueless.  I need to be at the gym in a little under half an hour bro.  No time to school him even if he is real.
