Bbye! Don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out.

2013-01-09 01:52:48 PM
I blame Luongo for breaking up another happy marriage

Can someone explain wtf they would wait until NOW to do this??

that's gay

That's some weird-ass timing, but I really do appreciate the way the Leafs continually strive to entertain fans of the other 29 teams.

2013-01-09 01:56:32 PM
The timing is fine. There's no draft coming up, there's nothing really for the GM to do right now. Good time for a change.

2013-01-09 01:57:11 PM
Weird, I thought for sure they would have rode him for a few more years of ineptitude. I wonder if this wasnt so much a firing as a quitting.

Hell the same organization has let brian failangelo destroy the raptors for getting close to a decade now.

That being said. Did he turn the leafs around? I am not so sure. Yeah he got Kessel and Lupul and a few other decent players but he also started with just as many if not more decent players. it feels like he just exchanged crap for crap to me. the leafs still arent a playoff team and probably wont be again this year. and if they DO make it , its because of the shortened season.

All in all I think I agree Burke has failed hard as his time as GM in Toronto. 4/10 for effort seeing as Toronto is the fail city and he knew that head of time and still tried. Giving up far too much for Kessel and unable to bring any big free agents into town was his downfall.

2013-01-09 01:58:21 PM
Heh...

Thanks for taking Kessel off our hands and facilitating Seguin's arrival in Boston!

yeah but what took so long.

2013-01-09 01:58:41 PM
Was this the peace offering that teams are giving the fans?

I wonder what Kings' peace offering will be.

This is the Canadian version of a coup, right?

Complete conjecture on my part, but I wonder if maybe Burke refused to make a trade for Luongo, and management fired him for that.

/ THANK YOU KESSEL *CLAP CLAP CLAPCLAPCLAP*

You would think that with a short season starting next week, the club would like to have as few major distractions as possible, but that just might be me. As for nothing to do, that will change as soon as the ink is dry on the CBA.

MLSE has other firings to do. Colangelo must be pooping himself right now.

My thoughts too. This will get interesting, weird, ugly, back to interesting and ultimately arrive back at wtf.

Especially considering how involved he was with its creation. He probably knows a few things about it that Nonis might not at this point.

like any of the 4 previous gm's did the Leafs fans any favours.

Dont look now but the Marlies are in 1st in their division
that doesnt mean stanley cup parade but it means the farm is stocked well and if some of the camp attendees falter (I'm looking at you Grabbo and Kulemin) there are replacements that can step in.

Too bad he had to have such a big mouth. Is Nonis the answer or is he just a replacement, time will tell.

Luongo has what 10 years left on his 12 year deal? I think burke had said at one point he was unwilling to give out larger than 5 year contracts or at least was very skeptical of them. It could be that he wasnt willing to pay luongo as much as he wants ONTOP of giving up whatever the nucks wanted back. And took a stand on it. like he always does. It is also likely that the management seeing a decent cap space left open and a dwindling fan base are eager to bring in ANY big name goalie to stop the local sports stations from continuing their leafs have no goalie streak.

waiting list or not. last year there was a lot of embarrassingly empty stadiums for "sold out" games.

Maybe the Argos winning the Grey cup has putsome embarrassment pressure on the other Toronto sports teams. " the friggin Argos won a championship before us?"

I hope the new ownership group isn't full of Wangs. The Hangar has always been a suit arena, not like the Gardens. A good chunk are corporate seats, suits go where the perceived action is, not for the love of the game.

I can understand wanting to fire Burke. But the timing just confuses the hell out of me. Better now than in the middle of the season, I suppose, but right before the season is set to start? Normally, you would do this at the end of a season so the new guy has time to get things in place, run the team's approach to free agency, and whatnot.

Shrugging Atlas: Can someone explain wtf they would wait until NOW to do this??

The most logical conspiracy theory is that Burke didn't want to trade for Luongo, but the owners did.

Firing Burke is a good thing, but what they are about to do (trade for Luongo) is worse than doing nothing.

poisonedpawn78: Luongo has what 10 years left on his 12 year deal?

I think you might see a compliance buyout used on his contract. Luongo is the third highest paid on the team after the Sedins' and clearly redundant at this point with Schneider's play last year.

But they can't buy him out until July. So is Luongo going to be the most expensive backup ever this season?

My first thought. So let's get it started. I'm saying Gardiner, Holzer, one roster forward and a 2nd round pick. Followed shortly be me forgetting about hockey for a few years.

I agree. My daughter wrote me a few days ago and said that there was a lot of interest in the Leafs acquiring Luongo. I said " Not from me"
Guy can't stop the puck in clutch situations with one of the best defensive line ups in the league, he sure as hell won't be able to do it with the Leafs' sieve of a defence.

This is why the Leafs fail. They make money no matter what - why bother putting a decent team together? They are sold out until eternity.

Southern Ontario needs a 2nd team. There is demand from us bluejeans wearing folks! Maybe Copps is out of the question, but why not Guelph or KW or heaven forbid Brampton or Markham or something. Build (or refurb) an arena and we will come, promise!!

The Leafs will continue to fail as long as MLSE makes oodles of money on a sold out product. I am surprised they fired Burke so soon!

Sure. Why not? Have him "tear a hip flexor" or something and go LTIR for the year à la Rick DiPietro.

2013-01-09 02:53:11 PM
I echo the sentiment that it is weird timing. Unlike virtually every other hockey fan on the planet, I have no opinion on either the Leafs or Burke. Don't hate or like either one. Burke's time was getting short, we all knew that - Toronto expects results, and is part of the reason they've not won anything for longer than I've been on this planet - but it seems so odd to do it now, just as his rebuilding efforts start to enter a phase where results can at least be anticipated.

This.

I wonder if they decided to give Burke future considerations for any championship rings the Bruins may acquire in the near future.

Them, too! Still haven't seen either of them play yet...

Why would any team offer players in trade to get Luongo? The Canucks will be paying franchise player rates for a backup goalie with a proven record of choking - it seems they would be happy just to find someone willing to take the worst goalie contract since DiPietro's off their books. To actually ask for anything back in trade just seems ludicrous. Luongo does play decently in the regular season but absolutely cannot rise to the occasion in clutch situations. I can't see why any team would even want him, let alone give anything up to get him. Then again, we are taking about the Maple Laffs.

Err, it's fake. Just found it online.

2013-01-09 03:42:25 PM
"It has been photoshopped," said Stephen Ross, President of Clear Channel Outdoor's Boston Division. "[People] don't have access to the billboard."

Ross told BostInno it is a digital billboard, not a traditional sign, and someone merely took a photo of it and added the angry, white lettering to it before distributing it online.

Threadjack, but it's ok, because I'm subby.

Has anyone heard this "no cross-conference play" rumour about the shortened season?

2013-01-09 03:53:32 PM
It's not a rumor. 7 games vs each division opponent, plus a home-and-home series with every other team in the conference.

At least is seems to know about this league - but still can't sign up:

There was a problem

The password is incorrect. (Error #109)
That league is not available. (Error #450)

I've temporarily made my email visible in my profile, so if you could send me an invitation, perhaps that will take care of it.

Since you're all here, the owners have ratified the new CBA. Bettman to give a press conference in the next couple of minutes.

I'll put myself in when I get home from work tonight. Never tried it before but a short season is a good time to learn it.

swahnhennessy: It's not a rumor. 7 games vs each division opponent, plus a home-and-home series with every other team in the conference.

Negative. From TSN article about the BoG approving the CBA framework...

The league is planning to have teams play three games against the 10 opponents within the same conference but outside their division. They will then have an unbalanced schedule against division rivals, with five games coming against two teams and four against the two others, according to a source. Link
