mekkab: Smoky Dragon Dish: Look, if Mekkab wants to be an asshat and not get a rabies shot when rabid bobcat brain tissue and blood splatters all over him, fine.... it's his body and his decision.

Thank you, Smoky Dragon DIsh.

At least someone is looking out for my interests!

... Rabies treatment shots are no worse than any others I have had, and I had to get my first series in my knuckle where I was bitten.

Its no big deal.

/works around rabies vector species.. gets shots at -least- annually and the same ones you have to get if I get bitten.

//just less of them

Pre-exposure shots are like any other vaccination. The post-exposure series, however, begins with large, deep injections of globulin. Which cost $8,000 apiece, by the way. (Just finished the series last month after a raccoon bite.)

My post bite treatments may be different, since I get pre-bite as well. Mine have always been two and two, spaced over a week or so, for post bite treatment. (as well as a blood test).

I'm told there are different styles of administration, mostly based on insurance coverage and potential allergy issues.

8K a piece huh? Damn. My pre-bites are about $1000, and I think the post were around $500, but I didn't have to pay those, the rehab clinic takes care of that stuff, because they get a grant for working with RVS for those type of expenses.

adrift1827: About 3-4 years ago I was de-winterizing my boat with my brother-in-law. I heard him on the roof cussing up a storm and about died laughing when I realized that he had just unzipped a canvas cover to the bimini top and about a thousand little field mouse-sized bats fell/flew out onto & around him along with a winter worth of said bat's waste.

I would not worry much about that.

Healthy bats are not too much of a concern, but there is a *very* short window where a rabid bat can still fly, but has become symptomatic. That is the danger zone. As their brain deteriorates they become much more likely to crash into objects, or just land on the ground and become an attractive nuisance to the curious. That is when infection happens. Your dog, cat, or even child sees a bat flopping around on the ground and goes to investigate. That is usually when a bite happens, and when transmission occurs.

Bat bites can be very subtle, and you may not even know you were bitten, so... human transmission occurs, and people die. It is thankfully rare, but I don't suggest anyone go near a bat that is just laying on the ground or has crashed into something. Not without welders gloves on.

My grand total was $18k. At first I thought they must have accidentally added a zero or something, but that's the going rate for post-exposure.

Is it true that it's a big farking needle in your belly?

Used to be, a series right in the gut. My dad was on a ship in the Red Sea back in the 60s, and one crewman got bit by a dog while on shore leave.

Ship's doc didn't like him, so the injection sites spelled out the doc's name...

Smoky Dragon Dish: wxboy: Galactica Actual: Are bobcats native to New England? I had always thought of them as a Pacific Northwestern animal.

Pretty much most of the country.

That map lies. There are bobcat in NY, NJ, CT, etc...

And Central Massachusetts, apparently.  Brookfield (which, fwiw, is a lovely middle-of-nowhere town) is just north of center of that big missing chunk of southern New England.
