The cat ran out of the garage and bit Mundell's 15-year-old nephew on the arms and back before it was shot dead.

The poor child.  Surely they could have just treated him with rabies medication instead of shooting him.  That seems a little drastic.

/Pssst.  Weasel.  I think they meant they shot the bobcat

Are bobcats native to New England? I had always thought of them as a Pacific Northwestern animal.

I seriously thought the answer was going to be two wild bobcats.

Obama would have preferred the rabid animal run off into the woods and then his health care pay for the rabies treatment "just in case it had rabies."

I think that's SOP when an animal bites you. Better safe than sorry. Once you start showing symptoms, you're done; there is nothing they can do for you.

stop saying that shiat.
It makes people, especially children, afraid to tell people if they may have been bitten by a suspect animal

Rabies treatment shots are no worse than any others I have had, and I had to get my first series in my knuckle where I was bitten.

Its no big deal.

/works around rabies vector species.. gets shots at -least- annually and the same ones you have to get if I get bitten.

Doesn't really matter

If there was a serious rabies risk in my area, I would encourage everyone to have rabies prophylaxis treatment done. Most insurance will cover it, and it means that -if- you get bit you just a "top up" shot and one in the bite wound, instead of the full series

Especially if I had small children who were more likely to do something silly like picking up a bat on the ground.

They're in Oklahoma. Dad was bowhunting for deer when a bobcat ran towards him. "Bob's" head ended up above our fireplace for about two years, until Mother insisted that it be removed. He had a second, very popular, career above the cash register in our pool hall (NOT "billiard parlor").

Also OH and KY. Not quite sure if that's inside the non-bobcat zone on the map or not. Maybe it's outdated? I get the impression that the population is on the rise around here.

When I was a kid in Southwest OH, I found one on my uncle's (rural) street, dead from an apparent car strike. He's a hunter and it was apparently a rare enough sight for him that he quickly stopped what he was doing and hiked out to the street to see if I was full of crap.

I also once found a dead rare owl on the road. For that one a park ranger of some sort came to our house to verify what it was and took it back with him to have it mounted for display in the state park he worked at.

/maybe i spent too much time playing in the street as a kid?

It can also be spread by brain tissue, and the guy shot it. Perhaps that's how they got it's blood on them. So post-exposure vaccinations would be a wise precaution.

She made out with her husband?

1. Rabid bobcat bites man, transmitting rabies via saliva.
2. Man gets sympathy sex from wife...goes down/French kisses her.
3. Woman gets expensive/painful shots series to prevent needless rabies death.

Ta da!

Pre-exposure shots are like any other vaccination. The post-exposure series, however, begins with large, deep injections of globulin. Which cost $8,000 apiece, by the way. (Just finished the series last month after a raccoon bite.)

About 3-4 years ago I was de-winterizing my boat with my brother-in-law. I heard him on the roof cussing up a storm and about died laughing when I realized that he had just unzipped a canvas cover to the bimini top and about a thousand little field mouse-sized bats fell/flew out onto & around him along with a winter worth of said bat's waste.

If your comment has any truth to it, I'm suddenly very glad that story doesn't have a very bad ending for him or me. I took the canvas the rest of the way down, threw it in the lake to rinse out most of the nasties, then bagged it up in garbage bags and took it home with me to wash it at the local laundromat. I'm not not quite sure how ill-advised that might have been.

Look, if Mekkab wants to be an asshat and not get a rabies shot when rabid bobcat brain tissue and blood splatters all over him, fine.... it's his body and his decision.
